The Indian National Congress on Thursday officially named V. D. Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala, ending nearly 10 days of suspense and intense internal discussions within the party following the Congress-led United Democratic Front’s sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.

The announcement came after a series of high-level consultations involving Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi and top party observers. The decision was finalised ahead of a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram.

Satheesan, who served as the Leader of Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, emerged as the frontrunner after leading the Congress-led UDF campaign that defeated the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) after a decade in power. The UDF secured a commanding 102 seats in the 140-member Kerala Assembly, one of the Congress party’s biggest victories in recent years.

The Kerala chief ministerial race had triggered days of political speculation and internal lobbying, with senior Congress leaders K. C. Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala also considered strong contenders for the top post. Supporters of different factions openly campaigned for their preferred candidates, while UDF allies, including the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), publicly expressed support for Satheesan.

Political pressure had mounted on the Congress leadership as opposition parties criticised the delay in selecting the chief minister despite the alliance’s decisive mandate. Posters targeting the Congress leadership had also surfaced in parts of Kerala amid the prolonged uncertainty.

A six-time MLA from Paravur constituency, Satheesan is regarded within the party as an articulate leader known for his aggressive attacks on the Left government inside and outside the Assembly. He first entered the Kerala Assembly in 2001 and later became one of the Congress party’s key faces in the state.

Party leaders said Satheesan’s appointment reflects the Congress leadership’s attempt to project a relatively younger and more assertive leadership in Kerala at a time when the party is seeking to strengthen its position nationally after recent electoral gains.

The new government is expected to begin consultations on cabinet formation shortly, with alliance partners likely to discuss portfolio allocations in the coming days. Satheesan is also expected to meet Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar to stake claim to form the government.
