Julio Ibáñez remains in South Africa under conditional release nearly two months after his dramatic detention during a livestream sparked international attention and diplomatic involvement from Mexican authorities.

Verified media reports confirm that Ibáñez, a reporter with Mexican broadcaster TUDN, was detained in March while covering football-related assignments connected to preparations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Viral footage circulating online showed armed South African officers entering his hotel room during a live social media broadcast before the stream abruptly ended.

Reports from Mexican media state that Ibáñez and cameraman Danny García were arrested after allegedly operating a drone in a restricted area in Johannesburg without authorization. South African authorities reportedly linked the drone activity to a sensitive zone near a Jewish educational institution, leading to heightened security concerns and a criminal investigation under aviation regulations.

Claims circulating on social media that the journalist was formally charged with terrorism or espionage, however, have not been officially confirmed by South African authorities. Verified reports indicate the known legal charges are linked primarily to alleged violations of drone and civil aviation rules.

Ibáñez reportedly spent nearly a week in detention before being released on bail. Mexican diplomatic officials and legal representatives have since been working to secure permission for him to return to Mexico while legal proceedings continue.

Media reports also confirmed that the journalist travelled to South Africa to produce coverage related to Mexico’s football opponents and World Cup-related reporting assignments ahead of the 2026 tournament.

The next court hearing in the case is reportedly scheduled for May 28. Until then, Ibáñez remains under legal restrictions inside South Africa. Neither South African prosecutors nor Televisa have publicly disclosed additional details regarding the ongoing proceedings.

The incident has triggered wider discussions in Mexico over journalist safety abroad, drone regulations in sensitive areas and the growing security scrutiny surrounding major international sporting events ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
