BJP surges ahead in Bengal trends, leads in 192 seats as counting continues

Early trends in the West Bengal Assembly election showed the BJP leading in 192 seats, while the Trinamool Congress was ahead in 92, as counting continued across the state’s 293 constituencies. The BJP’s lead placed it well above the majority mark, according to the latest trends reported from the Election Commission count.

The trends also showed the BJP at around 45% of the vote, while the TMC was polling about 42%, reflecting a close contest in the popular vote even as the seat tally tilted sharply toward the BJP. Analysts and poll trackers noted that a relatively small shift in vote share translated into a much larger gain in seats.

In Bhabanipur, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was reported ahead, while BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was trailing in the latest count. The Bhabanipur contest remained one of the most closely watched races in the state because it featured a direct face-off between the two top leaders.

In the Jhargram belt, the BJP was also leading in all four seats where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier campaigned and reportedly ate jhalmuri during a rally stop. Those seats included Jhargram, Binpur, Gopiballavpur and Nayagram. The trends in those constituencies added to the BJP’s momentum across the state.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has ordered fresh polling in Falta on May 21 after complaints and irregularities, meaning the final West Bengal outcome will now be decided on 293 seats instead of 294. The repolling in Falta is expected to take place later this month, with counting scheduled for May 24.

The count remains underway, but the latest trends showed a dramatic shift in Bengal politics, with the BJP taking a commanding early lead and the TMC struggling to narrow the gap.
