Infiltration attempt near LoC ends in gunfight, terrorist killed in Poonch sector

The Indian Army on Tuesday foiled an infiltration attempt by suspected terrorists along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district, with one intruder killed during the operation, officials said.

According to security officials, troops deployed in the forward sector detected suspicious movement near the LoC during surveillance operations late Tuesday. The infiltrator was challenged by Army personnel after attempting to cross into Indian territory under the cover of darkness, triggering an exchange of fire.

Officials said the intruder was neutralised during the operation while search and sanitisation activities were immediately launched in the surrounding forested area to rule out the possibility of additional infiltrators. Security forces are also conducting a detailed search for weapons, communication equipment and other materials that may have been carried by the suspect.

The identity and group affiliation of the killed terrorist have not yet been officially disclosed. However, officials indicated that preliminary assessments suggest the infiltration attempt was linked to cross-border terror activity originating from across the LoC.

The latest incident comes amid heightened security deployment across Jammu and Kashmir following repeated intelligence alerts regarding infiltration attempts ahead of the summer season. Security agencies have increased surveillance along vulnerable stretches of the LoC using thermal imaging systems, drones and night-vision monitoring equipment.

Poonch and neighbouring Rajouri districts have witnessed multiple encounters, ambushes and infiltration attempts over the past two years, making the region a major focus area for counter-terror operations by the Army and security agencies.

Officials said the situation in the area remains under close watch and additional troops have been deployed to strengthen domination along infiltration-prone routes. Senior Army officers are also monitoring the operation.

The Indian Army has repeatedly stated that infiltration attempts from across the border continue despite strong counter-infiltration measures along the LoC. Security forces maintain that such operations are aimed at preventing terrorists from entering civilian areas and disrupting peace in the Union Territory.
