‘Significant stride…’: PM Modi on Cabinet approval to Jamrani Dam Multipurpose Project in Uttarakhand

On Thursday, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the inclusion of Jamrani Dam Multipurpose Project of Uttarakhand under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (PMKSY-AIBP). The CCEA has approved central support of Rs.1,557.18 crore to Uttarakhand for completion of the project with estimated cost of Rs.2,584.10 crore by March, 2028.

Sharing the news on social media platform X, Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Gajendra Singh Shekawat wrote: “Our cabinet chaired by Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji approved the inclusion of Jamrani Dam Multipurpose Project of Uttarakhand under Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana-Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme (PMKSY-AIBP). The project involves construction of a dam near Jamrani village across river Gola, a tributary of river Ram Ganga, in Nainital district of Uttarakhand.”

“The project envisages additional irrigation of 57,065 ha (9,458 ha in Uttarakhand and 47,607 ha in Uttar Pradesh) in Nainital & Udham Singh Nagar districts of Uttarakhand, and Rampur & Bareilly districts in Uttar Pradesh,” added the Union Minister.

After this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also called this move a “significant stride” towards prosperous and sustainable Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. Replying to Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekawat’s post, PM Modi wrote: “This decision by the CCEA will bolster irrigation, enhance hydro power generation and provide clean drinking water to over 10 lakh people. The CCEA has approved central support of Rs.1,557.18 crore to Uttarakhand for the completion of the project with an estimated cost of Rs.2,584.10 crore by March 2028. Apart from the construction of two new feeder canals, 207 km of existing canals are to be renovated and 278 km of pucca field channels are also to be taken up under the project. In addition, the project also envisages hydropower generation of 14 MW, as well as the provision of 42.70 million cubic meters (MCM) of drinking water to Haldwani and nearby areas benefitting more than 10.65 lakh population. However, drinking water and power benefits shall be available entirely to Uttarakhand.

World Water Day: PM Modi to launch “Catch the Rain” Movement for water conservation

On Monday, 22 March, on the occasion of World Water Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain’ movement via video conference at around 12:30 PM IST. The theme of this campaign is “catch the rain, where it falls, when it falls”.

The campaign will be implemented in both rural as well as urban ares of the country from 22nd March 2021 to 30th November, 2021 – the pre-monsoon and monsoon period in the country. It will be launched as a Jan Andolan to take water conservation (rainwater harvesting) at grass-root level through people’s participation.

After the event, Gram Sabhas will be held in all Gram Panchayats of each district (except in the poll bound states) to take ‘Jal Shapath’ for water conservation.

Also, a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) would be signed between the Union Minister of Jal Shakti and the Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to implement the Ken Betwa Link Project, the first project of the National Perspective Plan for interlinking of rivers.

On Sunday, March 21, PM Modi himself tweeted about the same, “Tomorrow, on World Water Day, the ‘Catch the Rain’ Movement would be launched at 12:30 PM. This movement will take place across India based on the theme of ‘catch the rain, where it falls, when it falls.’ It will strengthen water conservation efforts happening in our country.”

National Jal Jeevan Mission 100-Day campaign to be launched to ensure safe water supply in schools, Anganwadi Centres

On the occasion of 151st Gandhi Jayanti, the National Jal Jeevan Mission will launch a 100-day campaign to provide safe water supply in schools and Anganwadi centres across India, the Jal Shakti Ministry said on Thursday.

Paying tribute to Gandhi Ji the ministry said, “This campaign will go a long way in ensuring safe water supply to our children that will positively impact their health and overall development. This is a befitting tribute to the ‘Father of the Nation’ Mahatma Gandhi on his 151st birth anniversary.”

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged states and Union Territories to make the best use of the campaign to ensure potable piped water in public institutions while releasing the ‘Margdarshika’ for Gram Panchayats and Paani Samitis for the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM).

“During this 100-day campaign, gram sabhas will be convened coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti, on October 2, 2020, and in coming days to pass a resolution for providing safe water in all schools, Anganwadi centres and other public institutions in the village in the next 100 days,” the ministry said.

The facilities will be operated and maintained by the “Gram Panchayats or its sub-committee” i.e. village water and sanitation committee or Paani Samiti.

The campaign will be moved along with other line departments such as Education, Women & Child Welfare, Panchayati Raj and Rural Development and Tribal Welfare by the nodal department by involving Gram Panchayats.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat government is organizing an event at Porbander on Gandhi Jayanti where CM Vijay Rupani will declare that four districts of the state – Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Porbandar, and Anand have 100 per cent household tap water connections coverage. The 100-day campaign will be launched during the event, the release said.

The event will be joined virtually by Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat via video conference from Delhi.

In Gujarat, the tap water coverage in rural households is 79.85 per cent as on date and the state has provided tap water connections to 7.70 lakh households in 2020-21and JJM aims at universal coverage of tap water connection to every rural home by 2024.
