Israel set to become second largest receiver of US aid

Washington, Oct 18 : Israel looks set to emerge as the second biggest net receiver of US financial assistance after requesting a record $10 billion in emergency aid this week, statistics showed.

The New York Times cited officials familiar with the request as saying Monday that the Israel aid package enjoyed bipartisan support in the US Congress and was expected to go to a vote in the weeks following President Joe Biden’s solidarity trip to Israel on Wednesday.

If approved, the aid granted by the United States to Israel in the past two decades would by far outstrip financial support provided to Ukraine over the same period, placing Israel second only to Afghanistan in numerical terms.

Data published by the Department of State indicates that Israel received $63.1 billion in US aid from 2001-2023, averaging $3 billion per year, while Ukraine came fifth with $30.4 billion, most of which was granted in the past two years. As of late September, Afghanistan has been the top receiver with $111.7 billion in US funding.

Washington has dished out hundreds of billions of dollars in aid to its allies over more than 20 years. Iraq received $64.4 billion, Egypt $33.6 billion, Jordan $23.5 billion, Pakistan and Ethiopia $17.5 billion apiece, Kenya $13.3 billion, and Colombia $12.2 billion.

Reuters confirms death of its journalist near Israeli border in Jordan

Washington, Oct 14 : Reuters has confirmed that its journalist was killed on Friday while filming live on the border with Israel in southern Lebanon.

“We are deeply saddened to learn that our videographer, Issam Abdallah, has been killed,” the news agency said in a statement, adding it was working with authorities in the region to obtain more information.

Six other journalists working for Reuters, AFP and Al Jazeera were wounded, AFP reported.

The United Nations extended its deepest condolences to Reuters following the death of its crew member. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric called for an investigation into what exactly had happened.

Southern Jordan came under Israeli shelling earlier in the day after the Israel Defense Forces accused Lebanese armed group Hezbollah of firing rockets into the Israeli territory.

Israeli military warns Palestinians to evacuate Gaza City

Jerusalem, Oct 13 : Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) on Friday ordered residents of Gaza City to evacuate to the southern area of the coastal enclave ahead of a possible Israeli ground offensive.

“The IDF calls for the evacuation of all civilians … for their own safety and protection,” read a statement issued Friday morning.

“You will be able to return to Gaza City only when another announcement permitting it is made,” the statement said.
According to the IDF, Hamas militants are using underground tunnels in the city to hide.

Israel is believed to be preparing for a ground incursion on the Gaza Strip, according to media reports and analysis.
Since this round of attacks between Hamas and Israel began on Saturday, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes against targets in the Gaza Strip. So far more than 1,500 Palestinians and more than 1,300 Israelis have been killed.

Three Palestinian health workers killed in strike on ambulance in Gaza Strip

Gaza, Oct 11 : An Israeli airstrike on an ambulance in the Gaza Strip killed three health workers of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), the organization said on Wednesday.

“THREE PRCS MEDICS KILLED Israeli occupation forces directly targeted a PRCS ambulance in the northern Gaza Strip moments earlier, killing three martyrs of humanitarian duty: Khalil Al-Sharif, Yusri Al-Masri, and Ahmad Dahman,” the PRCS wrote on X.

Al-Aqsa Mosque witnesses 2nd day of violence

Jerusalem, Apr 6: Israeli police raided East Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound for a second consecutive day, triggering clashes and more rocket launches from Gaza towards southern Israel, Israeli and Palestinian sources said on Thursday.

At least six people were reported injured, according to a statement by the Palestinian Red Crescent.

In charge of the sensitive compound, the Islamic Waqf reported that police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the worshippers.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that the police stormed the compound while nearly 20,000 worshippers were still performing the Ramadan Taraweeh night prayer.

Israel’s police said in a statement that “dozens of law-breaking youths” attempted to barricade themselves inside the mosque to incite riots.

According to the statement, the forces broke in after the youths attempted to close the mosque’s doors. “The lawbreakers began shouting incitement calls, firing firecrackers, and throwing objects at the police officers who were operating at the scene,” the statement read.

The Israeli raids drew condemnations from across the Muslim world and the United Nations.

The violence broke out during a sensitive holiday time when tens of thousands of Muslim worshippers observe the holy month of Ramadan through prayers at the hilltop compound. Below the compound, scores of Jewish pilgrims commemorate the Passover holiday with prayers at the Western Wall.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is located in East Jerusalem, the third holiest site for Muslims and the most sacred place for Jews. The site is located in East Jerusalem’s Old City, a territory Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war along the rest of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Israel attacks Gaza in response to fire balloons

“Israel overnight threw major shots through airstrikes against Hamas targets in Gaza to retaliate against the launching of incendiary balloons being fired from the Palestinian enclave that as a result caused massive destruction in southern Israel”, the country’s military said early Saturday.

It was July 25, when the first attack interspersed, the Israeli army retaliated their spot by conducting airstrikes on prime targets of the Islamist movement Hamas, who reigns the Palestinian Enclave.

“In response to continual launches of incendiary balloons from Gaza into Israel throughout the day, a short while ago IDF fighter jets struck a Hamas military compound and a rocket launching site,” the Israeli army official added in a statement.

“The rocket launching site was located close to civilian surroundings”, the army averred stressing upon the focal point of destruction that Hamas continues to deliver to the Palestinian civilians.

As per the reports, there were no casualties. However, on Friday the incendiary balloons caused rampant four fires Friday in the Eshkol region near Gaza, the Israeli firefighters added.

There have been spasmodic incidents occurring at intermittent intervals. This includes a series of incendiary balloon launches, just after the termination of the May 21 ceasefire of 11 days that emerged as an event of a deadly fight between Israel and Hamas. That incident killed 260 Palestinians along with fighters, reported the Gaza authorities.

“In Israel, 13 people were killed, including a soldier, by projectiles fired from Gaza”, the police and army official averred.

A Hamas ally added in a statement, “Friday’s balloon launches come after the Israeli army carried out retaliatory shelling in Lebanon in response to a volley of rockets fired by Hezbollah”.

26 killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza city in the most insidious single attack

Israeli airstrikes on Gaza city, on Sunday, torpedoed three buildings and took away the lives of at least 26 people. Well, it is being considered as the most insidious single attack since the heavy war broke out between Israel and the territory’s militant Hamas rulers nearly a week ago.
