Iran says uranium enrichment ‘not open for discussion’ in talks with US : Report

Iran has stated that uranium enrichment is “not open for discussion” in ongoing contacts with the United States, according to reports carried by Iranian state media outlet Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB).

The report said Iranian officials also made clear that the country’s nuclear technology and scientific capabilities are not part of negotiations with Washington, signalling Tehran’s continued refusal to compromise on what it describes as its sovereign nuclear rights.

The latest statement comes amid fragile diplomatic efforts involving the United States, Iran and regional intermediaries to reduce tensions linked to Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions and security issues across West Asia.

Iran has repeatedly maintained that uranium enrichment is a legitimate right under international agreements and insists its nuclear programme is intended for peaceful civilian purposes. Tehran has also opposed demands from the United States and its allies seeking limits on enrichment activities or dismantling of nuclear infrastructure.

The issue remains one of the biggest obstacles in ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran. The United States has continued expressing concern over Iran’s enrichment levels and uranium stockpiles, while Israel has repeatedly warned that Iran’s nuclear activities pose a major regional security threat.

Recent statements by Donald Trump suggested growing frustration within Washington over the pace and direction of negotiations. Trump recently criticised Iran’s latest peace proposal and warned of “much more severe” action if tensions escalate further, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, have insisted that pressure and military threats will not force Tehran to alter its core nuclear policies.

Diplomatic discussions involving sanctions relief, maritime security and ceasefire arrangements are continuing through indirect channels, though no major breakthrough has yet been announced.

Global attention remains focused on the negotiations because of concerns over regional stability, oil markets and the possibility of further military escalation in West Asia.
