Prabhu Ram, Vice President of the Industry Research Group (IRG) at CyberMedia Research (CMR), shared his insights with Business Today, suggesting that while local production might result in some price reductions, it’s unlikely to have a major impact on the retail prices of these devices. He pointed out that broader economic factors still play a significant role in determining the final prices.

Similarly, Navkendar Singh, Associate Vice President at IDC, mentioned that the overall cost of iPhones in India will likely remain unaffected. He explained that even though the phones are being assembled locally, most of the components are still imported in completely knocked down (CKD) kits, and the added value in India is less than 10% of the total iPhone value. Therefore, the high duties on these components keep the prices elevated.

On the other hand, Prachir Singh, a Senior Analyst at Counterpoint, highlighted that while the base price of iPhones may stay consistent, consumers can expect significant discounts and offers, especially during festive seasons. Apple has been known for its aggressive promotions during such times, and this trend is likely to continue.

WhatsApp is working on a cool new feature that will let you share photos, videos, and documents with people nearby without needing an internet connection, similar to Apple’s Airdrop. According to WABetaInfo, this feature is currently being tested on Android devices but is expected to come to iPhones too.

In the latest test version of WhatsApp for iOS, called TestFlight, there’s a new “Nearby Share” feature. This will let you send files wirelessly to other WhatsApp users who are close by, using a secure connection. However, Android and iOS users will use the feature a bit differently. Android users can see who’s nearby and send files directly, while iPhone users will have to scan a QR code to start the transfer. Since this feature is still in testing, we don’t have a release date yet.

WhatsApp is also developing two more features for its Android app: on-device live translation of messages and live transcription of voice messages. The translation feature, which is in beta version 2.24.15.8, will process translations on your phone, so your data stays private and translations happen faster. Right now, it’s available in English and Hindi, but more languages are expected in the future.

Sure, we’ve seen similar offerings from Midjourney and DALL-E, but integrating this into iOS 18 could make it a lot more accessible and user-friendly. Now, thanks to MacRumors contributor Steve Moser, we have a clearer picture of how it all works.

We already knew that Image Playground would provide suggested prompts (though you can also craft your own), and while it’s not yet active in the iOS 18 beta, Moser has uncovered some juicy details about these suggestions.

The suggestions will be personalized, meaning you might get a prompt based on something you’re messaging a friend about. So, if you’re chatting about your dream vacation, expect a prompt to whip up some tropical paradise imagery.

Moser has also categorized a plethora of potential suggestions. Under ‘Nature and Environments,’ you might see prompts for mountains, deserts, forests, starry nights, or waterfalls. ‘Themes’ could include adventure, birthdays, graduations, fantasy, and love. ‘Beverages and Foods’ range from champagne glasses to coffee and tea. There are also prompts for ‘Items and Accessories,’ ‘Places,’ ‘Seasons,’ and ‘Costumes and Characters.’

You can’t restore a backup made from a newer iOS version onto a device running an older version. Having a computer backup ensures you can revert to iOS 17 if needed, even if it’s a bit outdated.

Apple has recently taken a decisive step by removing Binance, KuCoin, and other offshore cryptocurrency exchanges from its India app store. This move comes in the wake of the Indian government issuing compliance show cause notices to nine entities, including Huobi, Kraken, Gate.io, Bittrex, Bitstamp, MEXC Global, and Bitfinex.

Interestingly, even OKX, a notable offshore cryptocurrency exchange not included in the show cause notice list, has faced removal from the Apple India app store. The notices were issued by India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) on December 28, operating under the nation’s Finance Ministry and acting under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has sent a notice to Apple on the same as soon as the issue came into limelight.

Electronics and IT Secretary S Krishnan has said that CERT-In is investigating the hacking threat message issue in Apple Iphones. Talking to the media Mr Krishnan said, notice has been sent to in this regard. He hoped that Apple will cooperate in the investigation.

Seeing the message becoming a political issue, Apple gave clarification, saying that such messages have been sent to 150 countries. The message is not related to any government and can be wrong, “does not attribute the threat notification to any specific state-sponsored attacker.”

“It will take much longer than January because multiple parties are being investigated along with hundreds of workers, which means they are not getting back to work so soon,” a senior industry official said.

Wistron, a Taiwanese contract manufacturer’s plant in Narasapura, Karnataka was vandalised by a mob of factory workers in December 2020 which caused damages close to Rs 50 crore. Apple, having found lapses in the payment of worker salaries, suspended all new business to Wistron India until it rectifies the faults.

The incident disrupted Apple’s plan to manufacture the iPhone 12 Mini at the Narasapura plant, which was assembling the iPhone 7 and SE models. The analysts said that the shortfall in production caused by the disruption at Wistron to be met by imports, demand for the Apple iPhone models have eased after the festive season.

The violence at Wistron’s iPhone assembling plant in Kolar caused loss worth Rs 437 crore, estimates made by the firm in its complaint to police and labour department said, according to Times of India.

The Taiwanese company in the Karnataka district was attacked by disgruntled employees in the early hours of Saturday, 12 December after over 1,000 employees gathered outside the plant demanding rightful pay and protested against the management for alleged non-payment of wages. The employees also accused the management of overworking the factory workers and violating norms under the Factories Act.

The employees reportedly pelted stones at the building and set two company vehicles on fire after failed talks with the management. The Narsapura Police were called in and they resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the workers. They allegedly damaged the building, damaged vehicles, set them on fire, damaged costly equipment including machines and computers. Infrastructure worth ₹10 crore, ₹60 lakh worth cars and golf carts, smartphones, and other gadgets worth ₹1.5 crore were among those which suffered the damage, the company mentioned.

An FIR has been registered at the Narsapura police station under various sections and the police have so far arrested 149 people and detained a few others.

The Karnataka government on Saturday said that it will provide security to the plant.
“The incident at the Wistron plant is unfortunate and unacceptable. The Government is committed to conducting a full and fair investigation into the incident and punish the wrongdoers…The problem could have been resolved if it had been adequately addressed as per law,” Minister for Major and Medium Industries Jagadish Shettar said.

Meanwhile, the managing director of Wistron India, Sudipto Gupta said in a statement the company was in a state of deep shock by the events at its Narasapura facility.

“We follow the law and are supporting the authorities with their investigation. The safety and wellbeing of our team members are always our top priority,” Gupta said in a statement to the media.

The Karnataka government has not only condemned the incident but also assured security and stringent action against people involved in the arson and violence.

Political parties in Karnataka on Sunday sought a thorough probe into the violence at Wistron’s manufacturing plant as they expressed concerns about its possible impact on the investment-friendly image of the state.
