Godrej Consumer Products projects double-digit sales growth for Q4 FY26, with strong performance across geographies and categories.

Godrej Consumer Products has projected a robust performance for the fourth quarter of the fiscal year 2026, with expectations of double-digit underlying sales growth and high-single digit volume growth in its standalone business. This anticipated growth aligns with the company’s previous guidance and reflects a steady demand in the domestic FMCG sector, aided by policy tailwinds such as personal income tax relief and GST rationalisation.

The company’s Indonesia business is showing signs of stabilisation, with mid-single digit volume growth expected in Q4, alongside sustained market share gains across categories. The Godrej Africa, USA, and Middle East (GAUM) segment continues to deliver strong results, with double-digit sales growth and high-single volume growth, driven by broad-based growth across geographies and categories.

On a consolidated level, Godrej Consumer Products expects to achieve close to double-digit revenue growth for Q4 FY26, consistent with the sequential improvement observed throughout the year. The company’s EBITDA growth is anticipated to align broadly with revenue growth.

Despite a sharp uptick in crude oil prices and upward pressure on derivative input costs due to global events, the company has taken preemptive measures to mitigate the impact. Godrej Consumer Products’ procurement strategy, which sources from multiple geographies, reduces concentration risk on stock availability. The company plans to address sustained inflation into the first half of FY27 through a combination of pricing actions and cost efficiency programmes.

Godrej Consumer Products remains confident in the resilience of its portfolio and the strength of its brands, positioning the company well for accelerated growth into FY27. The company is prepared to reassess its plans if further significant cost escalations occur.

Jindal Stainless has commissioned a 1.2 MTPA facility in Indonesia and committed ₹900 crore for downstream expansion in India.

Jindal Stainless has announced the commissioning of its 1.2 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) stainless steel melt shop in Indonesia, achieved ahead of schedule through a joint venture. This development increases the company’s total melting capacity to 4.2 MTPA, with 3 MTPA located in India.

Alongside this expansion, Jindal Stainless is preparing to launch a new 1.1 MTPA Hot Rolled Annealed Pickled (HRAP) line and a 0.17 MTPA Cold Rolling capacity in Jajpur, Odisha, by the fourth quarter of FY27 and the second quarter of FY27, respectively. These projects are part of an earlier announced investment of ₹1,900 crore.

Further augmenting its cold rolling capabilities, the company has allocated an additional ₹900 crore for facilities in Hisar and Kharagpur, expected to be operational by the second quarter of FY28. These expansions will enable the production of thinner cold rolled products for high-growth industries, increasing the company’s Cold Rolling capacity from 2.05 MTPA in FY26 to 2.67 MTPA by FY28, an increase of 0.62 MTPA. Once all projects are completed, Cold Rolling capacity will represent 64% of total melt capacity.

Jindal Stainless aims to achieve a sales volume of approximately 3.5 MTPA by FY29, with a double-digit compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the next three years. Managing Director Abhyuday Jindal highlighted the company’s commitment to raw material security and an integrated growth approach, while CEO Tarun Khulbe emphasised the alignment of capacity enhancements with India’s domestic potential.

The company remains focused on developing a future-ready, value-driven stainless steel portfolio, supporting India’s growth and self-reliance, and expanding its global customer base across key export markets such as the US, Germany, Italy, South Korea, and Japan.

Here are 5 most stunning tourist places to visit on your Indonesia tour

1. Ubud

Nestled amidst breathtakingly beautiful terraced rice fields, Ubud is regarded as Bali’s cultural centre and a major travel destination in Indonesia. Explore the numerous art galleries and craft shops in the city, as well as the daily dance and music performances.

2. Borobudur

One of the most well-known Buddhist temples in the world, the Borobudur is situated 40 kilometres (25 miles) northwest of Yogyakarta, Java. The kingdom of Sailendra constructed the Borobudur over a period of around 75 years in the eighth and ninth centuries, using an estimated 2 million stone blocks.

3. Mount Bromo

4. Lake Toba

Toba is not just the country’s biggest lake, but it may also be the most beautiful. This volcanic lake, which is about twice the size of Singapore, has several viewpoints from which you can view its surroundings, which include hills and greenery.

5. Torajaland

Torajaland (Tana Toraja) is a highland area in South Sulawesi and home to the Toraja people. After someone passes away, their body is kept—often for years—until the funeral, which might take several days.

Indonesia is a well-known tourist destination, known for its vibrant cities, rich cultural history and gorgeous beaches. Furthermore, it is home to some of the most magnificent landscapes on Earth, from towering rocky hills and coves with sandy beaches to lush tropical rainforests filled with amazing wildlife.

Here are 5 best places to go trekking in Indonesia

1. Mount Kelimutu

This volcano is best known for the tricoloured lakes that sit atop it, collectively known as Kelimutu Lake. Situated at a height of 1,639m (5,377ft), these mysterious, colour-changing lakes provide a panoramic view of the mountaintop. They show their own captivating colours as well, which over time have changed from calming turquoise to pitch black.

2. Mount Rinjani

The second-highest volcano in Indonesia, Mount Rinjani, towers over the stunning scenery of Lombok island. That means even for more experienced hikers, it provides a tough three to four day trek on a rather difficult trail.

3. Ijen Crater

The Ijen Crater is well-known for its stunning early morning views, turquoise-hued volcanic lake and captivating blue flame phenomena. Anyone hoping to witness the unique blue flames that lick over the sulphuric surface of the mountain must make a difficult hike.

4. Mount Bromo

Mount Bromo, one of Java’s most famous peaks, provides stunning views of the Tengger massif, which is made up of a complex series of active volcanoes across the landscape. Despite being one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, Mount Bromo is nevertheless one of the most popular destinations for hikers because of how easy it is to reach the peak.

5. Padar

East Nusa Tenggara’s Padar is part of the huge Komodo National Park. However, unlike its famous sister island, this uninhabited islet is entirely quiet, with nothing but stretches of gorgeous, hilly landscape.

While many of Earth's volcanoes currently lie dormant, others demonstrate a particularly fiery restlessness through frequent eruptions. Let's take a look at 10 of the world's most active volcanoes.

Our planet is adorned with majestic volcanic peaks that forcibly remind us of the raw, untamed power percolating beneath the surface. While many of Earth’s volcanoes currently lie dormant, others demonstrate a particularly fiery restlessness through frequent eruptions. Let’s take a look at 10 of the world’s most active volcanoes.

Kīlauea, Hawaii

Topping the list is Kīlauea, one of the youngest and most active volcanoes on the Hawaiian islands. This broad shield volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983, with slow-moving lava flows frequently adding new land mass as the molten rock oozes into the Pacific Ocean. Part of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Kīlauea holds deep significance in native Hawaiian traditions and mythology.

Mount Etna, Italy

At over 10,900 feet, Mount Etna is not only Europe’s highest active volcano but one of the world’s most persistently explosive ones. This iconic stratovolcano on Sicily’s east coast has been frequently erupting for over 3,500 years, with historical records dating back to 1500 BCE. Etna’s 400+ craters and vents are telltale signs of its temperamental activity which led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Stromboli, Italy

Known as the “Lighthouse of the Mediterranean,” Stromboli has been erupting continuously for over 2,000 years from its island home in the Tyrrhenian Sea. While relatively mild, its frequent explosive eruptions have been visible for seafarers throughout recorded history. In fact, the term “Strombolian eruption” is derived from this volcano’s characteristic explosive bursts of incandescent lava.

Mount Merapi, Indonesia

With its ominous name meaning “Mountain of Fire,” Mount Merapi is one of the most active and hazardous volcanoes in Indonesia. Situated on the densely populated island of Java, this stratovolcano’s frequent eruptions have buried entire villages under deadly clouds of super-heated ash and gas. An important figure in Javanese mythology, Merapi continues to be intensely monitored due to the catastrophic risks it poses to nearby communities.

Piton de la Fournaise, Réunion Island

Like Hawaii’s Kīlauea, Piton de la Fournaise is a shield volcano known for its effusive eruptions producing long lava flows across Réunion Island in the Indian Ocean. One of the world’s most active volcanoes, its relatively accessible and spectacular lava displays have made it a major tourist draw, though surrounding areas are still routinely evacuated during heightened volcanic unrest.

Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland

While not as perpetually restless as some others on this list, Eyjafjallajökull made global headlines in 2010 when its explosive eruption grounded air travel across Europe for weeks due to its massive ash plume. This glacier-capped volcano has a complex eruptive history often influenced by meltwater interactions that can multiply its explosive force and ash production.

Mount Yasur, Vanuatu

For those seeking to witness the awesome primordial sights and sounds of an actively erupting volcano, look no further than Mount Yasur on Tanna Island in Vanuatu. One of the few permanent lava lakes on Earth, Yasur’s summit crater is easily accessible to visitors. The volcano has been continuously erupting with strombolian bursts for over 800 years in a sacred display deeply woven into the indigenous culture.

Sakurajima, Japan

With a long eruptive record dating back to the 8th century, Sakurajima is one of the most continually active volcanoes in Japan. Located in Kagoshima Prefecture, this former island became connected to the mainland Kyushu through its incessant explosive eruptions that have buried the surrounding landscape under meters of ash through the centuries. Frequent evacuations are required to protect residents from Sakurajima’s relentless ashfalls.

Popocatépetl, Mexico

Also known as “El Popo,” the 17,800-foot Popocatépetl volcano looms over Mexico City and has a history of hazardous explosive eruptions. While periods of quiescence allow surrounding communities a respite, scientists maintain vigilant monitoring of this cultural icon that has deep roots in Aztec mythology and tradition. When Popocatépetl does reactivate, its massive plumes of ash and gas create disruptions over a wide region.

Fuego, Guatemala

Appropriately named “Fuego” meaning fire in Spanish, this Guatemalan stratovolcano is notorious for its frequent high-level eruptions sending plumes of ash, gas and incandescent material high into the atmosphere. Located near the colonial city of Antigua, Fuego is part of the Central American Volcanic Arc and eruptions often trigger life-threatening pyroclastic flows that race down its slopes at horrific speeds. The majestic yet volatile peak stands as a continual reminder of nature’s destructive potential.

From the slow ooze of Hawaiian lava flows to the explosive fury of Central American ash plumes, these persistent volcanic wonders simultaneously inspire awe and fear in their awesome power to create and destroy. While overwhelming forces to behold, modern monitoring helps societies prepare for and mitigate the risks from these blazing natural phenomena.

These behemoths have sculpted landscapes, altered climates, and are a reminder of the raw, untamed power brewing beneath the Earth's surface. Let's take a look at the 10 largest volcanoes on Earth ranked by their size and volume.

Earth is adorned with some of the most beautiful feats of nature – gigantic volcanic peaks that tower miles into the sky. These behemoths have sculpted landscapes, altered climates, and are a reminder of the raw, untamed power brewing beneath the Earth’s surface. Let’s take a look at the 10 largest volcanoes on Earth ranked by their size and volume.

Mauna Kea, Hawaii (33,500 cu km)

Rising over 13,000 feet above sea level, Mauna Kea is dwarfed by its 19,700-foot height from base to summit when measured from the ocean floor. This shield volcano is not only the highest point in Hawaii but contains about 25% of the entire volcanic landscape mass in the Hawaiian ridge. Mauna Kea last erupted around 4,600 years ago, though it is technically still considered dormant rather than extinct. The volcano’s broad shape is the product of millions of years of fluid basaltic lava flows layered over each other. Its summit hosts some of the world’s most advanced astronomical observatories, providing crystal-clear visibility thanks to its remote location and thin atmospheric conditions.

Mauna Loa, Hawaii (17,000 cu km)

The largest active volcano on our planet, Mauna Loa is known as the “Long Mountain.” Rising 13,679 feet high and comprising over 51% of the Big Island’s area, it has erupted 33 times since its first well-observed eruption in 1843. Though not currently erupting, Mauna Loa is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth in modern history. Its gigantic bulk has been formed by countless fluid basaltic lava flows over hundreds of thousands of years. The volcano’s frequent, non-explosive eruptions have reshaped the Hawaiian landscape while rarely threatening major populations.

Tamu Massif, Northwest Pacific Ocean (12,000 cu km)

Tamu Massif is the largest known single volcano on Earth, with a footprint about as large as the state of New Mexico. Part of the Shatsky Rise oceanic plateau, this behemoth submarine shield volcano sits nearly 6,500 feet below the ocean’s surface. Tamu Massif was likely formed by relatively quick eruptions of lava flows over just a few million years, as the oceanic tectonic plate passed over a hot spot in the mantle. Its sheer enormity was hidden from human sight for centuries until modern sensing technologies revealed its sprawling submarine presence.

Ojos del Salado, Chile (4,000 cu km)

At 22,615 feet, Ojos del Salado is the highest volcanic summit in the world, forming part of the lofty Andes mountain range on the Argentina/Chile border. This massive stratovolcano is comprised of thick, viscous lava flows from andesitic and dacitic eruptions over hundreds of thousands of years. While its youth and vigour have diminished, it is still considered among the world’s highest risks for potential hazards due to its proximity to populated areas and recent signs of unrest. Ojos del Salado features a 6-mile diameter caldera at its summit caused by massive explosive eruptions around 600,000 years ago.

Pico de Orizaba, Mexico (905 cu km)

The tallest mountain in Mexico at nearly 18,500 feet, Pico de Orizaba is a stratovolcano whose rocky peak is glazed by year-round snowfields and glaciers. While currently dormant, it has the potential for explosive future eruptions given its complex geological history. Orizaba’s 9-mile altitude drops host some of Mexico’s only remaining glaciers, as its tropical latitude leaves few areas hospitable for large ice masses. The volcano’s early eruptions formed the giant Ahumada caldera which later eruptions built taller cones inside. Pico de Orizaba last erupted in the 19th century and could become restless in future centuries.

Kilimanjaro, Tanzania (888 cu km)

At 19,341 feet, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain on Earth. This extinct stratovolcano features multiple remnant volcanic cones and striking glaciers despite its location near the equator. Kilimanjaro began forming over a million years ago through explosive eruptions that built up its initial cone. Though the last major eruptions ceased around 360,000 years ago, residual volcanic activity as recent as 200,000 years ago created the plateau-like Kibo summit area. Kilimanjaro’s famed glaciers are rapidly shrinking due to climate change after gracing its slopes for over 11,000 years.

Mount Meru, Tanzania (300 cu km)

Towering nearly 15,000 feet high with an iconic conical shape, Mount Meru is an active stratovolcano in Tanzania’s Arusha National Park. It last erupted in 1910 and its fertile soils nourish the surrounding grasslands and forests. Meru features a distinct 1,300-foot wide crater punched into its broad summit from historical explosive eruptions. Though dwarfed by its famous neighbour Kilimanjaro, Meru is considered one of the highest-risk volcanoes in Africa due to the potential for future eruptions and proximity to population centres. Its lower slopes are blanketed by a dense tropical forest sustained by its mineralized volcanic ash and soil.

Mount Sangeang Api, Indonesia (195 cu km)

One of the most active volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Mount Sangeang Api features two striking crater lakes and periodically erupts with dramatic plumes of ash and volcanic debris raining down on nearby islands. This stratovolcano is formed from alternate layers of solidified ash and lava over hundreds of thousands of years. Its two crater lakes formed when recent eruptions caused structural collapse and trapped water accumulating from rainfall and volcanic vents. Sangeang Api’s volatility forced the evacuation of its island’s residents multiple times over the past few decades.

Kronotsky, Russia (170 cu km)

Kronotsky is a massive shield volcano on Russia’s remote Kamchatka Peninsula. The heavily glaciated edifice was created by numerous prehistoric eruptions, the largest of which are believed to be among the most powerful in recent geological history. Rising over 10,000 feet high, Kronotsky features over 30 overlapping craters and cones dotting its surface, some still steaming from residual volcanic activity. The largest cone at the summit contains a 1.8-mile-wide caldera formed by an explosive eruption around 38,000 years ago that deposited over 6 cubic miles of pumice across the volcanic landscape.

Mount Tambora, Indonesia (150 cu km)

In 1815, Mount Tambora unleashed the largest eruption in recorded history, roughly four times larger than Krakatoa’s disastrous 1883 event. The massive explosion ejected over 36 cubic miles of tephra, killed over 90,000 people, and its aerosol plume of sulfur dioxide lowered global temperatures for several years after, causing widespread famine and death. Tambora’s eruption formed a 4 by 5-mile caldera and drastically reshaped its pre-eruption conical profile into the rocky remnants seen today. Though unlikely to experience another cataclysmic event of the same magnitude, the 9,300-foot volcano remains closely monitored for potential threats.

While these volcanoes are powerful reminders of nature’s might it is important that we only appreciate their majesty from a relatively safe distance.

With each powerful eruption, authorities have escalated the danger level for Ruang. Currently, it is at the highest Level IV alert, indicating a hazardous eruption is ongoing with the potential for more high-impact explosions.

The Ruang volcano, situated in North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, has been exhibiting intense volcanic activity since Thursday, April 18th. The volcano’s repeated explosive eruptions have sparked grave concerns over potential tsunami risks, prompting the urgent evacuation of thousands of residents from the surrounding areas.

The Unfolding Volcanic Crisis

The volcanic drama unfolded early on Thursday when Ruang erupted violently, spewing towering columns of ash and smoke high into the atmosphere. According to the Indonesian volcanology agency, the volcano has erupted at least five times over the past 24 hours. The eruptions have ranged from violent explosions to lava fountaining from the crater.

With each powerful eruption, authorities have escalated the danger level for Ruang. Currently, it is at the highest Level IV alert, indicating a hazardous eruption is ongoing with the potential for more high-impact explosions.

Regional Disruption from Volcanic Ash

The eruption of the Ruang volcano has caused significant disruptions across the region, extending far beyond the immediate evacuation zones. A thick blanket of volcanic ash has blanketed the surrounding areas, forcing the closure of schools and enveloping entire villages. The Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado has also been shut down for 24 hours due to the hazardous airborne ash plumes.

Ruang is one of over 120 active volcanoes that form part of the Pacific Ring of Fire in Indonesia, an area renowned for frequent seismic activity resulting from the collision of tectonic plates. While relatively less populated compared to other volcanic regions, past eruptions in North Sulawesi have proven deadly, such as the 1969 eruption of Lokon-Empung that claimed nearly 200 lives.

Eyewitness Accounts

Eyewitness videos and accounts have captured the terrifying force of Ruang’s eruptions. Footage shows fiery red lava fountains and flashes of purple lightning amid the towering ash plumes. “We’re running, guys,” one witness is heard saying in a video as they scramble to evacuate ahead of the approaching ashfall. “We are escaping because the ash is coming close.”

The repeated powerful blasts have already damaged homes in the vicinity, forcing the evacuation of a nearby hospital, according to officials. The eruption has been so intense that budget airline AirAsia has cancelled flights to nine airports in East Malaysia and Brunei due to aviation warnings about the hazardous ash plumes.

Here is a rewrite of the details about the escalating danger and highest alert level for the Ruang volcano eruption:

Eruption Escalates to Highest Alert Level

As Ruang’s volcanic activity rapidly intensified, Indonesia’s volcanology agency has raised the alert level to its highest at Level IV, indicating a hazardous eruption is in progress with the potential for even larger explosive events. “The potential for further eruptions is still high, so we need to remain alert,” warned agency official Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari.

In response to the elevated threat, authorities have already evacuated over 800 people from the immediate vicinity surrounding the volcano. However, many more evacuations are anticipated, with the disaster mitigation agency planning to evacuate around 1,500 additional residents from the highest-risk zones. Another nearly 12,000 people on Sitaro and the neighbouring island of Tagulandang may also need to be evacuated.

To facilitate safe evacuations, a 6 km (4 mile) exclusion zone has been established around Ruang’s crater, with officials urging both residents and tourists to avoid the area. Transportation authorities have also shut down the airport in the provincial capital of Manado to avoid any disruptions from ashfall.

Looming Tsunami Threat Escalates Concerns

Perhaps the most severe risk is the potential for tsunamis if a portion of Ruang’s slopes were to collapse into the ocean. This scenario has precedent – the volcano’s 1871 eruption triggered deadly tsunamis when part of the mountain failed, killing around 400 people on Tagulandang island.

With the explosive intensity of the current eruption, authorities are remaining vigilant for any signs of an inbound tsunami threat. They have not ruled out ordering larger regional evacuations if the danger escalates further in the coming days.

Indonesia and Australia engage in high-level talks to enhance security cooperation. They anticipate finalizing a significant defence agreement, with discussions spanning bilateral relations, maritime security, and shared challenges.

Indonesia and Australia conducted high-level discussions in Jakarta, aiming to bolster security cooperation through an upcoming defence agreement. Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, expected to lead Indonesia, emphasized talks with Australian counterpart Richard Marles on maintaining and improving bilateral relations. Both nations anticipate finalizing a substantial defence cooperation pact within two to three months, with specific terms yet undisclosed.

Marles hailed the pact as the most profound and significant defence cooperation agreement ever between Indonesia and Australia. He emphasized its importance during a joint press briefing with Subianto, highlighting the shared destiny and collective security interests that underpin the bilateral relationship. Subianto, a 72-year-old former general with no prior elected position, appears poised to win the February 14 presidential election. Upon confirmation of his victory through an official count in the following weeks, he is expected to assume office in October.

During his two-day visit to Indonesia, Marles emphasized the longstanding maritime security cooperation between the two nations and expressed a mutual desire to further enhance their defence relationship. This meeting closely followed a recent discussion between Australian Defense Force Chief Gen. Angus Campbell and Subianto earlier in the week, highlighting Indonesia’s significant importance to Australia as the world’s third-largest democracy.

Marles also extended congratulations to Subianto on his apparent victory in the Indonesian presidential election, acknowledging the keen interest the election has garnered in Australia. Regarding concerns about Australians supporting separatist movements in Papua, Marles reiterated Australia’s stance on respecting Indonesia’s territorial sovereignty. He affirmed Australia’s unequivocal support for Indonesia’s territorial integrity, dismissing any backing for separatist movements in the country’s provinces. He emphasized Australia’s commitment to respecting Indonesia’s sovereignty without exception.

Despite Indonesia’s status as a significant neighbour and ally to Australia, the relationship has encountered challenges. Subianto acknowledged historical fluctuations but emphasized Indonesia’s view of Australia as a close and supportive friend, particularly during critical junctures.

Past disputes include allegations of Australian wiretapping in 2013, Indonesia’s execution of Australian drug smugglers, and incidents related to people smuggling. Additionally, in 2017, Indonesia temporarily halted military cooperation with Australia due to perceived insults toward Indonesia’s state ideology and military at an Australian military facility.
In September 2021, Indonesia lodged a diplomatic complaint against Australia for delays in sharing information regarding its involvement in the AUKUS trilateral pact, which includes plans for Australia to obtain nuclear-powered submarines in collaboration with the United States and the United Kingdom.

Since 2022, Australia has participated in the annual Indonesia-U.S. joint combat exercise called Super Garuda Shield alongside Japan and Singapore, marking the largest iteration of the drills since their inception in 2009.
The expanded military exercises are perceived as a concern by China, which views them as part of a broader effort by the United States to form an Indo-Pacific alliance akin to NATO, aimed at curbing China’s growing military and diplomatic influence in the region.

Additionally, discussions between the two countries ministers have included the topics of people smuggling and human trafficking, identified as shared challenges requiring collaborative efforts for resolution. Marles emphasized the importance of cooperative action in addressing these issues.

HAL and DRDO are leading a ₹60,000 crore upgrade of India's fleet of Su-30MKI aircraft. Native radar and avionics improve fighting power, demonstrating India's military independence and creating economic opportunities via exports.

India’s fighter jets will enter a new era of technological capability with the planned extensive overhaul of the Sukhoi Su-30MKI fleet. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is assisting Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the private sector in this enormous project, which is valued at an astounding ₹60,000 crore.

A major step forward for the “Make in India” strategy, the project was authorised by the Defence Ministry last year, and HAL has been tasked with spearheading the modification. The overhaul will be completed in two stages: the first will integrate new radars and avionics, and the second will improve the flight control systems.

Developments in Radar and Avionics:
The Indian Air Force expressed reservations about the Su-30MKI fleet’s antiquated avionics and radar systems, which will be addressed in the project’s first phase. The initiative, which demonstrates India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence technology, entails swapping out several equipment of Russian origin for indigenous ones.

To overcome the limits of older-generation radar technology and allow fighter jets to detect and strike targets from substantially larger distances, a new indigenous radar system will be created. The action is intended to guarantee that the Indian Air Force can compete with enemies.

Native Combat Edge Systems:
The primary focus of the update is to improve the aircraft’s combat capability by incorporating native systems into the platform. A new electronic warfare system will be implemented as part of this to jam incoming threats and obstruct enemy communications. Improved engagement capabilities with air-to-air and air-to-ground targets will also be achieved through the use of new domestic Infra Red Search and Track systems.

The extensive overhaul is expected to strengthen the Su-30MKI fleet’s standing as a potent force in the area and fulfil the changing demands of contemporary combat.

Accelerating the Improvement:
In order to hasten the renovation of its whole fleet of Sukhois, the Indian Air Force has placed the project on high speed. About ninety fighters are scheduled for the initial phase of improvement, which will concentrate on avionics and radars. The first phase of the project is anticipated to begin this year. Significantly, the entire refurbishment procedure will take place in India, demonstrating the country’s technological prowess and dedication to independence.

Prospects for the Economy and Exports:
The project offers substantial economic prospects in addition to strengthening India’s defence capabilities. The upgrades provide a sizable export market, with over 600 Su-27/30 aircraft in service in several nations, such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Algeria. The Su-30MKI fleet’s achievements have the potential to establish India as a major player in the international defence industry.

Along similar lines, last year an extra ₹11,000 crore deal was authorised for 12 Su-30MKI planes, which HAL is expected to produce using more than 50% indigenous components.

Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto claims victory in the presidential election with approximately 58 percent of the votes, amid allegations of electoral fraud by his opponents.

Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto has claimed victory in the presidential election following unofficial vote counts indicating a substantial lead over his opponents. The 72-year-old former special forces commander, who had previously run for president twice unsuccessfully, garnered approximately 58 percent of the votes, according to four pollsters conducting “quick count” ballots at samples of voting stations nationwide.

Rivals Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo trailed with about 25 percent and 17 percent, respectively, according to the independent pollsters, known for accurately reflecting previous election results since Indonesia began direct voting for the president in 2004. Preliminary counts by the election commission were slower, showing Prabowo securing 57.7 percent of votes with around 6 percent of ballots recorded.

Addressing jubilant supporters in Jakarta, Prabowo expressed gratitude for the quick results, emphasizing humility and unity among all Indonesians. Neither Anies nor Ganjar conceded, urging the public to await the official results expected by March 20. Ganjar’s campaign team stated they were investigating reports of electoral violations, alleging “structural, systematic, and massive fraud” without providing evidence.

To secure victory in a single round, a candidate requires more than 50 percent of votes cast and at least 20 percent of the ballot in half of the country’s provinces. Failure to achieve a majority triggers a run-off between the top two finishers in June.

Prabowo’s front-runner status was buoyed by the apparent support of outgoing President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi. His running mate, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the 36-year-old mayor of Solo, joined the campaign following a contentious court ruling on age limits.

The winning duo pledged to continue Jokowi’s policies, including ambitious infrastructure projects such as relocating the capital from Jakarta to Borneo. While Widodo’s presidency witnessed economic growth and infrastructure improvements, concerns about democratic decline and accusations of electoral interference have persisted.

Prabowo’s victory marks a significant milestone in his political evolution, from a former Kopassus special forces commander with a controversial past to a potential president-elect. Despite allegations of human rights abuses and past political turbulence, Prabowo successfully adapted his image during this election, targeting a younger demographic and projecting an image of humility and unity to secure victory.

Indonesians participate in a pivotal election, dominated by the contest to succeed President Joko Widodo amidst a race dominated by former governors and a controversial frontrunner.

Indonesians took to the polls on Wednesday across the sprawling Southeast Asian archipelago in a high-stakes election dominated by the contest to succeed President Joko Widodo. With nearly 259,000 candidates vying for 20,600 positions, this election stands as the world’s largest single-day electoral event.

While various posts are up for grabs, all eyes are on the presidency and the future of President Widodo’s ambitious plans, including positioning Indonesia as a hub for electric vehicles and executing a massive infrastructure overhaul, including relocating the capital city with a multi-billion dollar investment.

The battle to replace Widodo, fondly known as Jokowi, features two former governors, Ganjar Pranowo and Anies Baswedan, challenging the controversial frontrunner, Prabowo Subianto. Prabowo, a former special forces commander with a contentious past, is remembered as a key figure during Indonesia’s authoritarian era under President Suharto.

Initial surveys indicate Prabowo’s potential victory, with projections showing him leading with over 50% support, avoiding the need for a second round. However, the final outcome hinges on securing a majority across the diverse Indonesian provinces.

As Indonesians cast their ballots, many express desires for continuity, hoping for leaders who will uphold existing policies rather than initiating drastic changes. However, the election also serves as a platform for candidates to address pressing issues such as infrastructure development, education, and justice reform.

The voting process faced initial challenges, with thunderstorms causing disruptions in some areas, but overall turnout is expected to be high, traditionally averaging around 75% in past elections.

Former Jakarta governor Anies and ex-Central Java governor Ganjar appeal to undecided voters, aiming to force a potential runoff in June between the top two contenders. Both candidates advocate for fair and transparent elections, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles.

Defence Minister Prabowo expressed hope for a smooth voting process, marking his third bid for the presidency after previous unsuccessful attempts against Jokowi. Prabowo’s rebranding efforts, showcasing a softer and more approachable persona, resonate with younger voters, who make up a significant portion of the electorate.

However, allegations of electoral interference and concerns about succession neutrality linger, particularly regarding Jokowi’s perceived support for Prabowo and allegations of favouritism towards his own son’s vice-presidential bid.

Amidst these complexities, Indonesia navigates a pivotal moment in its democratic journey, with the outcome of this election poised to shape the nation’s trajectory for years to come.

Seeking to bridge trade deficit with Indonesia, India is planning to further diversify its export basket.

Jakarta, Nov 22 : Seeking to bridge trade deficit with Indonesia arising primarily on account of heavy coal and palm oil imports, India is planning to further diversify its export basket with the key Southeast Asian nation by adding more agri products such as potato, onion, apples and grapes.

Speaking to visiting media delegation as part of India-ASEAN media exchange programme, a senior official at Indian embassy here said that the trade deficit with Indonesia is not that large and hence manageable.

“We have been importing quite a substantial volume of coal and palm oil from Indonesia which leads to a trade deficit. In order to bridge this we are trying to diversify into new sectors. We are trying to diversify to agro products. We want to add apples, grapes, chillies, potato and onion among others to our export basket. So, we are trying to bridge the deficit,” he said.

The embassy official said that India and Indonesia are aiming at a total bilateral trade of US$50 billion by 2025.
“In 2018, our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) came here and we signed more than 30 MoUs. We also signed a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement that elevated our bilateral relations. In 2018 our trade (with Indonesia) was around US$ 20 billion. During this time our PM set a bilateral trade target of US$ 50 billion by 2025,” he said.

He further said that there has been almost 50% growth in trade since then and it has reached nearly US$ 40 billion.
“In 2023, if you see, there is a growth of 50% in bilateral trade and it has reached nearly US$ 40 billion. So, we are very close to achieving the target set by our Prime Minister. Among major items, we import coal and palm oil from Indonesia. We export sugar, rice, heavy equipment, engineering goods, technologies etc to Indonesia. So, our trade basket is quite large with Indonesia,” the official said.

Meanwhile, the media delegation also met the President of Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), Tetsuya Watanabe.

Watanabe said that as a policy think tank ERIA is keen to expand collaboration with the Indian government and policy-makers.

“India is an economic powerhouse and it has increased its significance economically and politically,” he said.

Under India’s G20 Presidency, ERIA was part of several working groups and participated in various ministerial meetings and summits.

According to Indonesian authorities, 127 people died and 180 were hurt in a stampede that occurred after crowd unrest during a football game in the province of East Java overnight.

According to East Java police commander Nico Afinta, after the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya finished, fans from the losing club entered the playing field and police shot tear gas, causing a stampede and cases of suffocation.

Images of body bags and people rushing onto the pitch in the Malang stadium were captured on camera by local news outlets.

Following the game, which Persebaya won 3-2, games in the top division of Indonesia’s BRI Liga 1 have been halted for a week and an inquiry has been opened, according to the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI).

There have been previous incidents of unrest at games in Indonesia, and fierce rivalries between clubs have occasionally resulted in fan violence.

Jakarta, April 30: Indonesia has invited both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Group of 20 (G20) summit in November, Indonesian President Joko Widodo. “Indonesia is ready to contribute to the peace effort,” Widodo said in a virtual press conference ON Friday. “Indonesia wants to unite the G20. Do not let there be a split. Peace and stability are the keys to the world economic development”. The G20, he said, plays a catalyst role in the recovery of the world economy. Adding that he had telephone conversations with both leaders of Russia and Ukraine this week. On Thursday, Widodo and Putin discussed issues of Russian-Indonesian cooperation and various aspects of the activities of G20 in a phone conversation. In a conversation with Zelensky on Wednesday, Widodo turned down a request for arms from the Ukrainian president. Saying that Indonesia is ready to provide humanitarian assistance.

Domestic edible oil prices, which are already high, are expected to rise further as Indonesia, the world's largest producer of palm oil, announces a restriction on exports on April 28.

Domestic edible oil prices, which are already high, are expected to rise further as Indonesia, the world’s largest producer of palm oil, announces a restriction on exports on April 28.

Indonesia has also been dealing with high edible oil prices as a result of internal shortages and rising prices.

China and India are two of the world’s largest importers of palm oil, with Indonesia accounting for more than half of the global supply. Palm oil is found in a wide range of items, including cooking oils, processed foods, cosmetics, and biofuels. It is the most extensively used vegetable oil in the world, and it is used to make a variety of items such as cookies, margarine, laundry detergents, and chocolate.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which disrupted shipments of sunflower oil from the region, global cooking oil prices have risen this year.

The Black Sea exports 76 percent of the world’s sunflower oil.

A suspension in Indonesian shipments would result in India losing around 4 million tonne of palm oil per month. According to experts, India’s sunflower oil supplies have practically halved to around 100,000 tonnes per month. As a result of the Ukraine conflict, which could make things worse for Indian homes.

Meanwhile, after a year of double-digit inflation. India’s wholesale inflation accelerated to a four-month high in March. Owing to a continuous rise in commodity prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

In March, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) increased 14.55 percent from February’s 13.11 percent.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier this year pushed Indian industries. To reduce imports and start purchasing oilseeds grown in the country.

Certain members requested that Russia should be expelled from the organization.

Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to join the next G20 summit in Indonesia later this year, and he won significant support from Beijing on Wednesday, against certain members’ requests that Russia should be expelled from the organization.

According to a report by Reuters, the United States and its Western allies are debating whether Russia should remain a member of the Group of Twenty major countries following its invasion of Ukraine. Any decision to expel Russia, however, would almost certainly be opposed by others in the group, raising the potential of some nations instead of boycotting G20 meetings, according to the reports.

According to Russia’s ambassador to Indonesia, which now has the rotating G20 chair, Putin plans to attend the G20 conference in November on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali. “It will depend on many, many things, including the COVID situation, which is getting better. So far, his intention is… he wants to,” Ambassador Lyudmila Vorobieva said in a news conference.

When asked about the possibility of Russia being pulled out of the G20, she stated that it was a venue for discussing economic matters, not a crisis such as Ukraine. China, which has not criticized Russia’s incursion and has opposed Western sanctions, praised Moscow on Wednesday, describing it as an “important member” of the G20.

According to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin, the G20 is a body that has to find solutions to crucial concerns including economic recovery from the COVID-19 outbreak. “No member has the right to remove another country as a member. The G20 should implement real multilateralism, strengthen unity and cooperation,” he told a news briefing.

Mount Semeru’s sudden eruption in the Lumajang district in East Java province leaves people in panic.

Mount Semeru’s sudden eruption in the Lumajang district in East Java province has left several villages in a state of terror and panic with layers of ashes leaving the people with no other option but to move to safer areas for shelters.

The sudden eruption at the highest volcano on Indonesia’s most densely populated island of Java accompanied by a thunderstorm and rain pushed lava and smouldering debris and formed thick mud that destroyed a bridge connecting two main villages of Pronojiwo and Candipuro. This acted as a barrier in further evacuation in Lumajang district, Thoriqul Haq told TV One. Indonesia geographically is prone to earthquakes and volcanoes.

Television reports showed people running in panic under a huge ash cloud, their faces wet from rain mixed with volcanic dust. The 3,676-metre (12,060 feet) Semeru had last erupted in January, gratefully no casualties have been reported yet.

The German-made submarine, KRI Nanggala-402, was conducting a torpedo drill in waters north of the island of Bali on Wednesday, but failed to relay the results as expected, a navy spokesman said.

On Wednesday, the Indonesian military chief told Reuters that Indonesia’s navy is searching for a missing submarine with 53 people on board and is soliciting aid from the neighbouring countries Australia and Singapore.

A navy spokesman said that the German-made submarine, KRI Nanggala-402, was conducting a torpedo drill in the north of the Island of Bali. But it failed to deliver the results as presumed, the spokesman added. In a text message, military chief Hadi Tjahjanto told Reuters that they were still searching for 53 missing people in the waters of Bali, 60 miles from the Indonesian Island.

The military chief also confirmed that assistance had been sought from Australia and Singapore. He said that the contact with the vessel was lost at 4:30 am on Wednesday. The 1,395-tonne vessel was built in Germany in 1978 and it underwent a two-year restoration in South Korea, which was completed in 2012. The information has been verified from the Indonesian cabinet secretariat’s website.

Indonesia had purchased a fleet of 12 submarines from the Soviet Union that it used to patrol its waters. But now the country is left with a formation of only 5 submarines, including two German-built Type 209 and three South Korean vessels.

Indonesia has been trying to upgrade its defence systems but most of its equipment has been worn out and most of the accidents in recent years involved its ageing military transport planes.

Meanwhile, the representatives of the defence departments of Australia or Singapore did not reply immediately to the request for comment. Indonesia’s navy is desperately in search of the missing crew and seeks help from neighbouring Australia and Singapore.

Myanmar Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing who evicted the elected government in a coup on February 1, will attend an association of Southeast Asian Nation Summit in Jakarta planned for April 21.

Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing will attend an Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Indonesia on April 24, a Thai foreign ministry spokesperson said on Saturday, for his first trip since he staged a Feb 1 coup.

According to an activist group tally, security forces in Myanmar killed 728 people in an attempt to stamp out protests. The country has been in a state of turmoil since Min Aung Hlaing ousted an elected government led by democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi. Reuters on Saturday reported that in a recent incident, security forces in Myanmar killed two people in the ruby-ming town of Magok, one of the several towns where crowds came out to protest. Myanmar’s neighbours have been trying to encourage talks between the warring factions. But the military has shown no inclination towards engaging in talks with them or to the ousted government.

The Thai Spokesperson, Tanee Sangrat said that several leaders of the 10-member ASEAN group had confirmed their presence in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, including Min Aung Hlaing. A spokesperson for the Myanmar junta did not answer any calls for comment. Myanmar’s ousted government is likely to condemn the junta chief’s participation in the international meet.

Meanwhile, some pro-democracy politicians including expelled members of parliament, announced the formation of a National Unity Government (NUG) on Friday, including Aung San Suu Kyi and leaders of anti-coup protests and ethnic minorities. The NUG desires international recognition and wants ASEAN to reject Min Aung Hlaing’s participation in the international meeting. The NUG seeks ASEAN to invite it instead. No representative of NUG was available for immediate comment on the matter. The junta, on Saturday, released about 23,184 prisoners from jails across the country under a New Year amnesty, a prison department spokesperson told The Indian Express.

Though very few among those arrested, are thought to be democratic activists. Saturday is the first day of the traditional New Year in Myanmar and the last day of a five-day holiday. It is usually celebrated with a visit to Buddhist temples and noisy water throwing and partying in the streets. Pro-democracy activists called for the festivities to be dropped and instead want people to focus on the restoration of democracy.

According to a tally conducted by the Assistant Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) activist group, Suu Kyi was among 3,141 people arrested in connection with the coup. A prison department spokesman told Reuters that he did not have any details whether any of those being freed might have been in connection with the protests against military rule.

THE ROUGH ROAD AHEAD

While the military was freeing thousands of prisoners, it was also keeping 832 people on warrants in connection with the protests, the AAPP reported. Among them are 200 people, including several internet celebrities, actors and singers who have raised their voice against the coup.

The coup has also triggered clashes between the army and ethnic minority insurgent groups in the north and east. Meanwhile, Aung San Suu Kyi faces various charges for violating an official secrets act for which she could face jail for 14 years. Her lawyers dismissed the charges though. Despite the election commission dismissing the objections raised by the military, the regime defended its coup by accusing Suu Kyi’s party of committing fraud in the November elections. The junta has said that it will conduct new elections within two years and hand power to the winner.

Josua Hutagalung, a 33-year-old Indonesian coffin maker became an instant millionaire when a meteorite worth $1.8 million crashed through the roof of his house. Joshua was working on a coffin next to his house when the space rock smashed through the veranda at the edge of his living room in Kolang, North Sumatra.

The stone, weighing 2.1kg, left a large hole in the tin roof and ended up buried 15cm deep in the soil beside the house.

Josua, who managed to dig the rock out, said the meteorite was still warm and partially broken when he touched it.

It is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old and is classified as CM1/2 carbonaceous Chondrite, an extremely rare variety worth around $1.85million, or $857 per gram.

Meteorites are priced by the gram with the cheapest pure-rock varieties fetching $0.50 to $5.00 per gram., and those with rare extra-terrestrial metals selling for up to $1,000 per gram.

Regarding the extraordinary incident, Josua said “The sound was so loud that parts of the house were shaking too. And after I searched, I saw that the tin roof of the house had broken.”

“I strongly suspect that this rock is indeed an object from the sky that many people call a meteorite. Because it is impossible someone deliberately threw it or dropped it from above,” he added.

The meteorite, which is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old, is worth around $1.8 mn. Josua was given the equivalent to 30 years’ of his salary for the space rock.

The father of three said he would use some of the money to build a church in his community.

The meteorite was shipped to the US where it was bought by Jay Piatek, a doctor and meteorite collector from Indianapolis, according to the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Texas, US.

The meteorite is classified as CM1/2 carbonaceous Chondrite, an extremely rare variety, the Institute recorded.

Three further fragments of the meteorite were found in nearby areas when it crashed in August one was discovered in a paddy field less than 3km from Josua’s home.

The meteorite has been officially named as Kolang, is estimated to have a total weight of 2.5 kg, according to the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Texas, US.

The interior of the meteor is dark grey and black, with small light-coloured speckles.

Mount Sinabung in Indonesia erupted on Monday, spewing ash and other volcanic material in the nearby areas.

Mount Sinabung on North Sumatra, Indonesia, erupted early on Monday spewing ash and other volcanic materials as high as 16,000ft (3 miles) into the sky. This is the second time the volcano erupted since Saturday.

No death or injuries were reported according to Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Centre and people have been asked to stay at least 5 kilometers away from the crater’s mouth as thick columns of ash-covered villages in the vicinity. The locals have been warned about potential lava flow dangers. They have also been advised to wear masks to avoid the thick black clouds of ash.

“The sound was like thunder, it lasted for less than 30 seconds,” said a resident, Fachrur Rozi Pasi according to reports from Reuters.

Gilbert Sembiring, who was visiting a friend in Naman Teran Kampung when the incident happened said, “The situation around Mount Sinabung is very dark now. It was bigger than the eruption a couple of days ago”.

A civil aviation spokeswoman said that flights were still operating in the region.

Indonesia has more than 120 active volcanoes, with the 2,460-meter tall Mount Sinabung being one of the most active. Mount Sinabung had been inactive for almost four hundred years until it erupted in 2010, killing two people and then in 2014 killing a dozen people. An eruption in 2016 killed seven people. Around 30,000 people had left their homes in the region over the last decade due to the mountain’s renewed activity.
