US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in New Delhi this week for a high-level visit aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation between India and the United States at a time when both countries are expanding engagement across defence, technology, trade and Indo-Pacific security.

Rubio’s meetings with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi come amid growing geopolitical competition in Asia and increasing efforts by Washington and New Delhi to deepen cooperation on regional and global challenges. Officials from both sides described the India-US relationship as one of the most important strategic partnerships in the world.

Strategic partnership takes centre stage

During delegation-level talks in New Delhi, Rubio said India and the United States were “not just allies” but “strategic allies,” highlighting the expanding nature of bilateral cooperation beyond South Asia.

According to officials familiar with the discussions, the talks focused on defence cooperation, critical technologies, supply chains, energy security, connectivity and Indo-Pacific stability. Rubio stressed that the partnership between Washington and New Delhi extends to cooperation in different regions across the world and is not limited to a single geographical area.

The US Secretary of State also described India and the United States as the world’s two largest democracies, saying both nations share common interests that continue to strengthen bilateral engagement.

Defence and security discussions in focus

Defence cooperation remained one of the major themes during Rubio’s visit. India and the United States have significantly expanded military coordination in recent years through joint military exercises, defence technology initiatives and strategic agreements.

Officials said the latest discussions included regional security challenges, military cooperation and deeper defence-industrial collaboration. India has increasingly emerged as a key strategic partner for Washington in the Indo-Pacific region as geopolitical tensions continue to rise across Asia.

The visit also comes amid efforts by both countries to strengthen maritime security cooperation and maintain regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.

Technology, trade and supply chains on agenda

Apart from defence, officials also discussed cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and resilient supply chains. Both governments have been trying to deepen collaboration in advanced technologies and reduce dependence on vulnerable global supply networks.

Trade and economic cooperation also figured prominently in the talks. While India and the United States continue to engage on tariff and market access issues, officials from both sides have repeatedly emphasised the importance of expanding investment and commercial ties.

The discussions also included efforts to improve cooperation in emerging sectors such as clean energy, digital infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.

Energy cooperation gains momentum

Energy security emerged as another key issue during the meetings. Washington has been pushing for stronger energy ties with India, including LNG and crude oil exports, while New Delhi continues balancing affordability, supply security and energy diversification amid global market volatility.

Officials said energy cooperation remains an important pillar of the India-US partnership as both countries seek stable and reliable supply chains in the face of ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

Quad and indo-pacific strategy remain key

Rubio’s visit also carries significance in the context of the Quad grouping involving India, the United States, Japan and Australia. Both governments have repeatedly described the Indo-Pacific as central to their strategic cooperation.

The discussions reportedly touched upon regional connectivity, maritime security and broader geopolitical coordination among like-minded partners. Washington continues to view India as a crucial pillar of its Indo-Pacific strategy.

PM Modi-Rubio meeting signals deeper engagement

During his visit, Rubio also met Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi. According to officials, the two leaders reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation across several sectors and discussed ways to further strengthen strategic ties.

Following the meeting, Modi said India and the United States would continue to work closely for “global good,” reflecting growing strategic convergence between the two countries on international issues.

Rubio’s India visit is expected to continue over the coming days with additional diplomatic engagements and strategic discussions involving senior officials and policy stakeholders from both nations.
