ABSS condemns Congress-Led Karnataka government’s Temple Tax as anti-Hindu; threatens legal action

The Akhil Bharatiya Sant Samiti (ABSS) declared on Thursday that the Congress, labelled ‘anti-Hindu,’ has reached a critical juncture from which there is no turning back. This assertion comes in response to the Karnataka government, led by the Congress party, passing legislation allowing the state to levy a 10% tax on temples generating revenue above ₹1 crore and 5% on those with revenue ranging from ₹10 lakhs to ₹1 crore.

In a video statement, Jitendranand Saraswati, the general secretary of ABSS, expressed concern over the impending implementation of what he termed as a religion-based tax, a first of its kind in India. He likened it to the historical Jaziya tax imposed during the Mughal era. Saraswati emphasized that taxation on income falls under the jurisdiction of the central government, and the legislation proposed by the Karnataka government is seen as a direct assault on the fundamental right of religious freedom.

Describing the tax as “illegal” and “anti-constitutional,” he urged the Karnataka governor not to approve the act. Additionally, he stated that the organization would escalate the issue to the Supreme Court for further deliberation.

Previously, the opposition BJP also criticized the Congress government, labelling it as “anti-Hindu.” BY Vijayendra, the former state unit chief of the BJP, accused the Congress party of intending to divert the funds for purposes other than temple development, suggesting that they would instead use it to replenish their own depleted financial resources.

In response to Vijayendra’s comments, Minister Ramalinga Reddy countered the BJP’s accusation of the Congress being “anti-Hindu” by asserting that the Congress party is, in reality, a staunch supporter and promoter of Hinduism.

Reddy emphasized that this perception arises from the consistent efforts of Congress governments over the years to protect temples and uphold Hindu interests.

Sonia Gandhi secures uncontested victory, elected to Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan without opposition

Sonia Gandhi, a Congress leader, secured an uncontested victory to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, as per a report by the news agency PTI, according to the Assembly secretary. The report also mentioned that Chunnilal Garasiya and Madan Rathore from the BJP were elected unopposed to the Upper House of the state.

This marks Sonia Gandhi’s debut in the Upper House following six terms served in the Lok Sabha.

Previously, Gandhi had conveyed to the voters in her Raebareli constituency in Uttar Pradesh that she would not contest in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Last week, the former Congress president submitted her nomination for the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, accompanied by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Reports suggest that her decision stems from health concerns, which would impede her ability to regularly visit her Lok Sabha constituency.

Sonia Gandhi, who led the Congress for nearly 22 years from 1998 to 2022, has been elected to the Lok Sabha five times. In 1999, she secured victories in both Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi and Karnataka’s Bellary, ultimately choosing to represent Amethi. In 2004, she contested from Rae Bareli, paving the way for Rahul Gandhi to contest from Amethi.

In April, a total of 56 Rajya Sabha members from 15 states will retire, including Manmohan Singh, who currently represents Rajasthan.

Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister, served in the Rajya Sabha from August 1964 until February 1967. If Sonia Gandhi assumes office in the Rajya Sabha, she will become the second member of the Gandhi family to do so.

With Sonia Gandhi withdrawing from Raebareli, there is speculation that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra might be considered for the seat. However, the party leadership has yet to make a decision regarding Priyanka Gandhi’s electoral debut.

Farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ march sparks heightened security measures and political promises

On the morning of February 13, farmers from Punjab initiated their ‘Delhi Chalo’ march to assert their demands, despite encountering substantial barricading at the Haryana-Punjab border and entry points into the National Capital.

The Haryana Police resorted to tear gas shells as a group of youths, participating in the farmers’ ‘Chalo Delhi’ protest march, attempted to breach the barricades set up at the Shambhu border in Ambala, according to officials.

Several farmers were also reportedly detained near the Shambhu border, as per official sources. To manage the situation, riot control vehicles, including water cannons, have been stationed at various points along the Punjab and Haryana borders. In Delhi, security measures have been heightened, featuring multi-layer barricades, concrete barriers, iron spikes, and container walls at border crossings.

Amid the ongoing farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge declared on Tuesday that if his party were to regain power, their government would ensure a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, prioritizing the welfare of farmers.

Addressing the audience during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ in Ambikapur, the headquarters of Surguja district in Chhattisgarh, Kharge also took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cautioning people against trusting Modi’s assurances.

“I would like to announce from Chhattisgarh that legal guarantee to MSP with extensive procurement of crops for farmers as our guarantee (for upcoming Lok Sabha polls). If we come to power, then this guarantee will definitely be implemented. It is our first guarantee…,” he asserted.

Regarding the farmers’ protests on the Delhi border, Kharge questioned the measures taken against them, remarking, “The farmers who have been fighting for their rights (on the Delhi border), iron spikes were laid on the road and cement walls were placed to stop them. What kind of democracy is this? Can’t anyone fight for their rights?”

Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda emphasized that enacting a law to ensure Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops should not be rushed without engaging all relevant stakeholders. He urged the farmer groups protesting to engage in structured discussions with the government regarding this matter.

Security measures have been heightened along Rajasthan’s borders with Haryana and Punjab, with mobile internet services suspended in three districts in anticipation of the farmers’ ‘Delhi Chalo’ march.

Inspector General of Police for Bikaner Range, Om Prakash, conducted a review of arrangements at the Ratanpura border, issuing necessary instructions and engaging with police personnel.

Mobile internet services have been temporarily suspended in Hanumangarh, Sriganganagar, and Anupgarh districts, while borders have been sealed as a precautionary measure. Additionally, due to security concerns, the Red Fort complex has been closed to visitors temporarily, as confirmed by a senior ASI official. A significant deployment of police and paramilitary forces has been observed in central Delhi in preparation for the farmers’ march.

Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, landed in San Francisco on Tuesday as part of a three-city US visit where he would engage with the Indian diaspora and meet with politicians. The chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, Sam Pitroda, and other IOC members met him at the airport.

Gandhi will visit many cities before arriving in Washington, DC, where he will meet with politicians and think tanks after speaking with students at the famed Stanford University in San Francisco.

During his week-long visit to the USA, the 52-year-old head of the Congress is also anticipated to speak with Wall Street CEOs, Indian Americans, and college students. On June 4, a public event in New York is scheduled to mark the end of his journey. At the Javits Centre in New York, the interaction would take place.

Gandhi’s visit is intended to further common principles and a vision of “real democracy,” according to Indian Overseas Congress chairperson Sam Pitroda last week.

Pitroda said in a statement that Gandhi’s trip had as its goal “to connect, interact, and start a new conversation with various people, organisations, and media, including the Indian diaspora that is growing in size in the United States and abroad to promote the shared values and vision of the real democracy with a focus on freedom, inclusion, sustainability, justice, peace, and opportunities world-wide.”

On Sunday, two days after a Delhi court gave its approval, Gandhi was given a new regular passport.

The former president of the Congress is scheduled to fly to San Francisco, California, on Monday night as part of a three-city tour of the United States. He had filed for an ordinary passport after giving up the old diplomatic passport that had been awarded to him while he was a member of parliament.

Gandhi was found guilty and given a two-year term by a Gujarat court in a defamation case involving his comment on the surname Modi, which resulted in his disqualification as an MP in March.

Cong releases list of candidates for Tripura polls

The Congress on Saturday released the list of 17 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections in Tripura.

According to a communique issued by Congress general secretary Mukul Wasnik, the party’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has selected the candidates.

Prominent among the 17 candidates include its lone MLA Sudip Roy Barman, former MLA Ashish Kumar Saha and state Congress president Birajit Sinha.

Barman will contest from Agartala Assembly seat.

Saha is pitted against BJP’s nominee and Chief Minister Manik Saha from Town Bordowali seat.

Tripura Congress chief will contest from Kailasahar Assembly constituency.

Election to 60 Assembly seats in Tripura will be held in a single phase on February 16.

The counting of votes will take place on March 2.

Congress rejigs Jharkhand unit, appoints 11 Vice Presidents, 35 General Secretaries and 82 Secretaries

The Congress established a political affairs committee, 11 vice presidents, 35 general secretaries, 82 secretaries, and a new working committee in the state on Saturday as part of a significant restructuring of its Jharkhand division.

The 26-member political affairs committee was established by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and included AICC in-charge Avinash Pande, state unit chairman Rajesh Thakur, Congress Legislature Party leader Alamgir Alam, former chief minister Madhu Koda, Rameshwar Oraon, and Ajoy Kumar.

In addition, the Congress named 82 secretaries, 35 general secretaries, 11 vice presidents, and a new working committee for the state.

Alam, Oraon, Kumar, Pranav Jha, a coordinator linked to the office of the Congress president, and Gourav Vallabh were among those named to the working committee.

Hemant Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leads an alliance government that includes the Congress (JMM).

Priyanka Gandhi is likely to name Chief Minister of Himachal

The final decision over who would serve as the state’s chief minister will be made by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who party leaders have credited with the party’s victory in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections, according to reports. This comes after a day of intense drama in the hill state, where competing factions fought for control.

On Friday night, the 40 Congress MLAs in the state approved the party’s customary one-line resolution, giving the “high command” the go-ahead to make a choice. By Sunday, the decision is anticipated.

Along with the newly elected national president Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi oversaw the party’s campaign in Himachal Pradesh and organised multiple rallies. She was also heavily involved in developing the party’s election strategy. Her leadership in achieving the victory for the party and thwarting the BJP’s electoral apparatus was praised by several other leaders.

Priyanka Gandhi has led the campaign team to its first electoral victory. While she led the canvassing in Uttar Pradesh earlier this year, the party lost those elections.

Congress meet to discuss challenges in 3-day brainstorming camp

New Delhi, May 12: The challenges before the Congress party and the country are the same, party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said on Thursday, a day before a three-day brainstorming camp begins at Udaipur in Rajasthan. Talking about the Chintan Shivir camp, Surjewala said. “In these trying times, when ‘Divide and Rule; has become the state policy. We resolve to re-dedicate ourselves to ‘Nav Sankalp’, that is, to once again propel India onto the path of progress, prosperity and societal harmony. “The challenges before the country and challenges before Congress are interlinked. As they ultimately reflect upon the ethos of India. Which the current dispensation has assaulted. And all this needs to be looked at”. He told the media. “The challenges before the nation are challenges faced by each one of us… For the country to move ahead, those challenges need to be addressed… ”

BJP has presented its own set of principles which are founded upon targeting the minorities, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and creating a fear psychosis among the majority vis-a-vis the minority, that is the policy they are now following officially,” Surjewala said. “It also warrants that elections will no longer be fought on issues of progress, prosperity, peace, schools, colleges, universities, infrastructure, power stations, MSMEs, jobs…. but they will be fought on bulldozer, loudspeaker, Shamshan vs Kabristan… This is a serious threat to the very existence of the country…”

He said Congress leaders will discuss at the camp how these challenges will be dealt with. “How is Congress going to address this new challenge? What are the organizational weaknesses the Congress has? What course correction the Congress needs to take. Is the new way forward and new milestones that Congress has to traverse?” He said the Congress wants to “introspect, contemplate and reflect” both on their failures and successes as an organisation. “The nation is facing an unprecedented crisis. We have to not just evaluate our situation, but bring changes required for the present times,” he said.

The Congress has identified six groups to examine. And submit their primary reports on actionables. For the political situation, social justice and empowerment, economy, organizational reforms, farmers and youth. These groups will present their first impressions for a conclusive discussion during the Chintan Shivir. The 430 invitees to Chintan Shivir will be divided among different groups. And they will discuss and deliberate over a period of three days. Various facets and challenges, in order to lay down a road map. The conclusions will be presented to the Congress President. And thereafter to the Congress Working Committee, for final shape and approval. “The road map will provide a way forward not only for the Congress Party to meet up with the current set of reverses and challenges, but will also pave the way for a resilient, strong and inclusive nation,” Surjewala added.

Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who launched the National Monetisation Pipeline on Monday, today avenged the INC leader Rahul Gandhi for his criticism over the latest scheme. “Does he (Rahul Gandhi) understand what monetisation is? It was Congress that sold the country’s resources and made kickbacks in it,” issued news agency Press Trust of India as a quotation from Ms Sitharaman.

Mr Gandhi had trail-blazed the Congress backlash on the government as opposition over the monetisation plan, by quoting that “It helped Prime Minister Narendra Modi sell the country’s crown jewels, built over 70 years with public money, to his industrialist friends.” The privatisation list is of assets built by successive Congress governments, which the BJP is now selling to cover up their mismanagement of the economy, the Congress party said.

Yesterday, the cabinet colleague of Ms Sitharaman, Union minister Smiriti Irani, also hit back the Congress and its policies and Mr Gandhi.

“In 70 years of Independence, the district the MP led (Amethi) did not even get a district hospital,” averred Ms Irani, who dislodged Mr Gandhi from family turf Amethi in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. “Their problem is that 6 lakh crore rupees will come from this disinvestment. That’s why they are having trouble,” she added.

Facebook takes down Rahul Gandhi’s post for policy violation

After Twitter, Facebook has now removed content posted by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that displayed the family of a nine-year-old victim of alleged rape and murder in Northwest Delhi, stating that this content strictly violated the platform’s policies and ethics.

As per the sources, Facebook has notified Gandhi and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) regarding the removal of the posts from social media platforms of Facebook and Instagram. Earlier this week, Facebook had on a note to Gandhi asked him to remove the mentioned post from Instagram — Facebook’s photosharing platform.

“We have taken action to remove the content as it violated our policies,” a Facebook spokesperson averred in an emailed statement on Friday.

Last week, NCPCR had asked Facebook to incorporate appropriate action against Gandhi’s Instagram profile for not posting as per the stated guidelines and simultaneously for violating provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, and the Indian Penal Code. NCPCR had demanded the deletion of the video from the platform.

Earlier this month, Gandhi had met the victim’s family and assured his assistance on their journey to justice and “will not back down even an inch”. Later onwards, he posted a picture of his meeting with the girl’s parents on his Instagram handle. A similar post was shared through his Twitter account due to which the microblogging platform had locked accounts of Gandhi including many others of the same party, INC for posting controversial content.

However, on August 14, Twitter restored Gandhi’s account once he submitted a consent letter from the family of the victim. “As part of the appeal process, @RahulGandhi (the official Twitter handle of Rahul Gandhi) has submitted a copy of the formal consent/authorisation letter to use the referenced image via our India Grievance Channel,” the Twitter spokesperson had said.

“We have followed the necessary due diligence process to review the appeal to protect the safety and privacy of the affected individuals. We have updated our enforcement action based on the consent provided by the people depicted in the image,” the Twitter spokesperson had said.

Former Assam CM Bhumidhar Barman passes away at 91

The former Chief Minister of Assam, Bhumidhar Barman passed away at a hospital in Guwahati on Sunday. According to the reports, Mr Barman died at 91 on Sunday evening after a prolonged illness, his family said.

He was a leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) and the veteran leader was a two-time chief minister of the state.

Late politician, Bhumidhar Barman was elected as the Chief Minister of Assam from 22 April 1996 to 14 May 1996 when his predecessor Hiteswar Saikia died.

He was again appointed the chief minister in 2010 when then CM Tarun Gogoi had gone to Mumbai for his heart surgery.

The former Assam CM was a minister in both Hiteswar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi governments, holding important portfolios like Health, Education and Revenue, among others.

The seven-term MLA was first elected to the AssamAssembly in 1967, as per the official records, reported NDTV.

Mr Barman also represented Borkhetry in the Nalbari district for four terms.

On the other hand, his son Diganta Barman contested from the seat in 2016 and lost. He was also the Congress candidate from the seat this time.

Interestingly, Mr Barman was also the two-time MLA of Nalbari West, and once won the election from Dharmapur.

The Indian politician was born in 1931 and passed his matriculation from Tihu High School in 1951. He is repotedted to be a doctor by profession, Barman had graduated from Assam Medical College in Dibrugarh in 1958.

He is survived by a son and a daughter. His wife predeceased him.
