In North India, winter has now started its havoc. At the same time, a cyclonic storm has started knocking in the Bay of Bengal.

The low pressure area over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjacent South Andaman Sea has now completely transformed into a low pressure area. Due to this, the risk of cyclonic storms is increasing. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning in this regard on Wednesday. It has been told what kind of change is going to occur in the weather in the Bay of Bengal, which is also going to take the form of a storm.

The Meteorological Department has said that the kind of weather conditions that have developed are expected to move towards the west-northwest direction. These weather conditions will gradually develop into a deep depression in the south of the Bay of Bengal by November 30. It is also expected that it will strengthen further and within the next 48 hours, it will turn into a cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ over the south-west and adjacent south-east Bay of Bengal.

Possibility of heavy rain

According to the report of Hindustan Times, the department has also said that light to moderate rain is expected at most places in the Nicobar Islands. Between November 29 and December 1, heavy to very heavy rains may be seen in the Nicobar Islands. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain at most places in the Andaman Islands. Very heavy rain can also be seen on 30th November.

Warning of high speed winds also received According to IMD, strong winds will blow at a speed of 25-35 kilometres per hour, which is also expected to reach 45 kilometres per hour. These winds are expected to blow in the southern Andaman Sea and adjacent Andaman and Nicobar Islands on November 29. In the south-east of the Bay of Bengal on November 30, winds can blow at a speed of 40-50 km per hour to 60 km per hour.

By December 1, the speed of these winds is expected to reach from 50-60 kilometres per hour to 70 kilometres per hour. On December 2, these winds can reach 60-70 kilometres per hour up to 80 kilometres per hour.

Cyclone Tej is predicted to make landfall between Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and Salalah (Oman) in the early hours of October 25.

The Arabian Sea is currently witnessing the formation of Cyclone Tej, a severe cyclonic storm. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that the storm currently resides near Socotra, Yemen. They anticipate that favorable environmental conditions will escalate it into an extremely severe cyclonic storm by Sunday afternoon.

Predicted Landfall

Cyclone Tej is predicted to make landfall between Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and Salalah (Oman) in the early hours of October 25. The storm is likely to traverse this path over the Arabian Sea.

Current Developments

A storm is currently brewing at a distance of 1850 km southwest of Karachi, Pakistan, in the Arabian Sea. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported on Saturday that a low-pressure area in the Arabian Sea has intensified into a depression.

Implications for Pakistan

The PMD has stated that no coastal regions of Pakistan are expected to be affected by this system. This marks the second cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea this year.

Warnings from Weather Experts

Weather experts have warned that storms can sometimes deviate from their predicted path and intensity. This was observed with Cyclone Biparjoy earlier this year. Consequently, it’s important to stay updated with current weather forecasts. At present, these forecasts indicate that the storm is on a trajectory towards the coast of Yemen and Oman. However, there’s a chance that it could change direction over the central Arabian Sea. This shift could potentially guide the system towards the coasts of Sindh and Gujarat. Therefore, this information is crucial for those living in these areas to prepare for possible weather changes.

As per official sources, some private schools in Mumbai have already decided to implement online classes for tomorrow.

As per the order of the BMC dated 19th July, 2023, all schools in Mumbai both private and public will remain closed tomorrow. This order came through after the IMD issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall alert in the city. With some districts such as Thane which were issued with the “Orange Alert”.

However, much like Mumbaikars, schools have decided that rains should not affect children’s education. As per various sources, online classes which were once seen as the daily practice during the COVID-19 lockdown, will return only for 1 day.

As of now, many private schools are in the works to notify their students of the 1 day of online classes to continue their education without disruption. While the Mumbai rains may seem to have affected every aspect of a citizen’s life, schools seem determined to promote educational continuity.

On the other hand, only a few private schools have opted for this alternative to the rains, other schools in the city or even government schools have not made any similar practices for their students.

Over 100 fatalities have been reported in Himachal Pradesh, and the damage from landslides and floods is believed to have cost over Rs 3738 crore.

In spite of a new IMD warning of heavy rains through July 18, Himachal Pradesh is still battling to recover from the enormous destruction brought on by cloudbursts and floods since last weekend. 108 fatalities have been reported in the state. According to figures issued on Friday by the Himachal government’s Department of Revenue, the damage in the state is expected to cost approximately Rs 3738.28 crore in financial loss. Himachal Pradesh continues to be the most severely impacted state in North India, and as a result, Union Home Minister Amit authorized the advance release of the second tranche of the central share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), totaling Rs 180.40 crore.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Central Government has already issued the first tranche of a Central share of Rs 180.40 crore to Himachal Pradesh from SDRF on July 10, 2023, for immediate relief efforts. The MHA stated that “the release of funds will assist State Government in carrying out relief measures for the affected people during the current Monsoon season.”

According to the ministry, the Government of India has given the State Government of Himachal Pradesh all necessary logistical and financial support so that it can effectively handle the situation brought on by the recent flash floods, cloudbursts, and landslides in Himachal Pradesh. According to the MHA, the Central Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has already given 27 states their part of the SDRF, totaling Rs 10,031.20 crore, in the fiscal years 2023–2024. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has sent a total of 11 teams, as well as rescue boats and other tools, to Himachal Pradesh to assist with rescue efforts.

Aside from that, the Ministry added, “Two MI-17V5 helicopters have been sent for an evacuation mission. One Column of 1 PARA SF and 205 Army Aviation Squadron have been deployed at Paonta Sahib. In order to examine the situation and the relief efforts being made by the State Government of Himachal Pradesh on the ground, the Central Government has also established Inter-Ministerial Central Teams (IMCTs). Beginning on July 17, the IMCT would conduct their fieldwork. In contrast, from June 24 to July 14, 108 people died in Himachal Pradesh as a result of the monsoon storm.

The period from June 24 to July 14 saw 108 fatalities in Himachal Pradesh. The government officials’ statistics showed that 72 deaths were caused by road accidents, fires, drownings, falls from steep rocks, snake bites, electrocution, and other causes, while 36 deaths were caused by landslides, cloudbusts, and flash floods. Due to the enormous destruction brought on by the torrential rains, a financial loss of over 3738.28 crore has also been reported in the state. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Himachal Pradesh is likely to endure severe rain, with the downpour forecast to linger for five days. The next five days are anticipated to see heavy to very heavy rain fall in Uttarakhand, heavy rain fall in Himachal Pradesh, and heavy rain fall in Uttar Pradesh, according to the IMD.

A yellow notice has also been issued for the state by the India Meteorological Department for the subsequent five days. On July 14, the monsoon started to move into Himachal Pradesh. A yellow alert has been issued in Himachal Pradesh for the following five days as a result. Most regions of Himachal Pradesh will experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall throughout the course of these five days. Landslides, flash floods, falling trees, and stone-firing accidents will also occur, according to the IMD. The constant rain has caused flash floods and landslides, which have caused extensive damage throughout Himachal Pradesh.

Meanwhile, substantial rainfall was seen today in Himachal Pradesh in the following districts: Saloni (district Chamba), 12 cm; Kangra Aero, 6 cm; Barthin, 6 cm; and Nagrota Surian, 6 cm. Prior to this, the Indian Air Force (IAF) carried out a total of 40 sorties over the course of the previous 48 hours as part of its Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations in the flood-stricken Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. The Ministry of Defence stated in a release that a total of 40 missions were carried out over the course of the previous 48 hours, during which 126 people were rescued and 17 tons of relief supplies were distributed in various locations.

As the monsoon rains continued to batter Himachal Pradesh, the Beas River in the Mandi district is in flood. Moreover, after being shut down yesterday owing to a landslide, vehicular traffic between Chaura and Wangtu has already resumed. According to a tweet from HP Traffic and Railway Police, “The National Highway is open for all vehicular movement from Chaura to Wangtu, but at Wangtu, the National Highway is closed due to a landslide yesterday, as a result of which small vehicles are being diverted from the temporary road of JSW.”

There are blocks on five national highways. There is an obstruction on National Highway 5 (NH 5) between Sakiba and Spilo in District Kinnaur. District Lahaul Spiti is located on a block along National Highway 3 from District Mandi to District Kullu. area Kullu has a block on National Highway 505, which runs from Gramphu to Losar in the Lahaul-Split area. A significant landslide in Mandi has blocked the road. According to a news release from the Himachal Pradesh Disaster Management Authority, National Highway 707 in District Sirmaur is closed because to a landslide close to Shilai. While visiting the flood-affected areas of the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, BJP leader JP Nadda and Union Minister Anurag Thakur.

Along with other political heavyweights, they were escorted by the former chief minister and leader of the opposition, Jairam Thakur. The BJP President gave the populace assurances that the federal government would provide all the aid required for relief and restoration. “13 teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are also stationed there. To assist in the rescue efforts, a MI-17 helicopter has been used. To provide assistance and promote recovery, the Central Government will take whatever action is required, according to Nadda. Nadda also paid a visit to the Panchvaktatra temple, which was submerged in the inundated Beas river, alongside Union Minister Thakur and former Himachal CM Jairam Thakur.

Additionally, the flood-affected parts of Himachal Pradesh, which has been devastated by excessive rains, received aid from air force aircraft. Ashutosh Garg, the Deputy Commissioner for Kullu, stated that the entire district is operating on a war footing when it comes to providing help and rescue efforts. “In the entire district, our relief and rescue efforts are being conducted on a war footing. Over 1800 transformers were impacted by the floods, of which the Electricity Department has repaired 50%. The Kandi-Kataula route, which connects the national highway segment between Manali and Chandigarh, has been reopened to traffic, according to the Kullu Deputy Commissioner.

Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, intervened directly earlier, and the Resident Commissioner’s office was able to rescue 22 athletes who had become stuck at the inter-state bus terminal (ISBT) in New Delhi due to flooding. Due to the Yamuna River’s rising water levels, flooding was seen at the interstate bus terminal at Kashmere Gate on Thursday. The increase in water level has temporarily halted bus operations, and buses from neighboring states are not being permitted to enter the bus terminal.

In order to compete in the 40th National Junior TaeKwondo Championship from July 7–9 in Shimoga, Karnataka, a team made up of 9 boys, 10 girls, 2 coaches, and 1 manager traveled there. According to officials, the squad returned by train to New Delhi this afternoon. They were stranded at ISBT due to the extensive logging outside the bus terminal. The Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu was then reached by one of the coaches, Ashiwini Kumar, who requested assistance over the phone. The CM then promptly ordered Resident Commissioner Meera Mohanty to save the coaches, according to an official statement.

They were then disqualified, and the athletes who had been transported to Himachal Bhawan were subsequently seen by Resident Commissioner and OSD to Chief Minister in New Delhi K S Bashtu. Their safe return to their homes in Himachal Pradesh would be arranged by the state government. As a result, the tourism industry in Himachal Pradesh, which was recuperating from the effects of the Covid-19 outbreak, has received another shock from the recent torrential rain and flooding. A hotelier remarked about how the rain has a negative impact on the travel industry.

“The tourism industry is losing 100% of its revenue. In Shimla, Kasauli, and Manali, I manage hotels. Most of the time, flooding and rain prevent access to the roads. They are terrified, those tourists. After Covid, this is another shock to our tourism industry, according to hotelier Rajinder Singh Thakur. In addition, a Maharashtrian traveler said that the interruption of the Shrikhand Mahadev yatra made him feel fortunate.

Himachal Pradesh has been hammered by heavy rains, which have caused flooding and landslides throughout the state.

The weak, westerly and south-westerly winds have adversely affected the monsoon in Maharashtra’s North Konkan region (including Mumbai).

The weak, westerly and south-westerly winds have adversely affected the monsoon in Maharashtra’s North Konkan region (including Mumbai). This led to the advancement of monsoon season to face a setback in those regions.

The monsoon reached Ratnagiri last week. It takes around 48 hours for the monsoon to reach Mumbai from Ratnagiri under favourable weather conditions. But, because of the weak south-westerly winds, it’s now been almost a week since the monsoon has stalled in Ratnagiri.

According to IMD sources, “ The situation as of now is not favourable for further advancement of monsoon in the North Konkan region. Strong westerly and south-westerly winds are required for the advancement of monsoon. There are westerly and south-westerly winds in the region, but not strong enough to pull the monsoon towards the North Konkan, Mumbai region.”

The sources also mentioned that whatever little rain is occuring, it’s because of the cyclone moving inwards and creating moisture. There are hardly any clouds in the region and there is no rain in the interior sections of Maharashtra and so, the rain occuring in the North Konkan coastal region is not because of monsoon advancement.

Based on current weather conditions, it’s unlikely for North Konkan and Mumbai to witness rainfall during the end of June or the beginning of July, causing a rainfall deficit in Maharashtra in June, the sources indicated.

June is a crucial month for the agricultural sector, especially for the farmers as it is the sowing season. Delay of monsoon means delay of sowing season which is going to cause interference in the harvest cycle. Especially for farmers, recovering from losses caused by the heatwave, the delayed monsoon is going to make conditions worse for them.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a nearly 70% probability of an El Nino developing this monsoon.

Concerns are growing over the potential impact of El Nino on agriculture, consumption, and the economy of India, which is considered the world’s fastest-growing economy and relatively resilient against global headwinds compared to other emerging markets. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recently reported that there is a nearly 70% chance of El Nino developing during this year’s monsoon season.

To protect farmers, the government has taken steps such as setting up a system for advisory services and forecasts based on different rainfall scenarios for each of India’s districts. However, the IMD revised its assessment on April 11, reducing the probability to 50%.

El Nino’s effects on India include drought, which is a consequence of the global weather pattern known as monsoon disruption caused by warming in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. The IMD’s latest prediction indicates a 70% chance of El Nino during June, July, and August, increasing to 80% for July, August, and September.

To mitigate the potential impact of El Nino, the Union’s agricultural ministry and IMD have been collaborating to develop regional strategies. Customized forecasts are being provided to state governments, enabling them to make preparations in advance. The IMD’s agro-meteorological advisory services and predictions will be distributed through Krishi Vigyan Kendras, a network of agricultural institutes.

India heavily relies on the monsoon, as half of the country’s net-sown acreage lacks irrigation facilities. Rainfall is crucial for replenishing natural reservoirs used for utilities, manufacturing, and municipal water supply.

Historically, El Nino years in India have led to droughts, affecting crop yields and causing inflation due to reduced kharif crop production. Approximately 50% of the country’s yearly food supply comes from the kharif crop. Experts anticipate a mild to moderate intensity El Nino this year.

After a period of La Nina (2020-2022), El Nino is expected to develop in 2023. The positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) is being relied upon by the government to increase rainfall and counter the effects of El Nino.

India’s significant increase in agricultural output has mitigated the impact of droughts. However, droughts still raise prices, reduce agricultural revenues, and negatively impact the overall economy. The central bank predicts that inflation will remain within a narrow range in 2023-24 if the country avoids the effects of El Nino on the southwest monsoon.

The economy indirectly feels the effects of rainfall through reduced consumer spending when crops fail. Rural consumers account for over half of two-wheeler and television purchases, and tepid consumer spending is contributing to the current economic slowdown.

Experts argue that the International Meteorological Organization’s prediction of a typical monsoon, at 96% of the 50-year average rainfall, is on the lower end. The monsoon is considered average if the humidity falls between 96% and 104%. Even a slight deviation from the forecast can lead to below-average monsoon conditions.

The agriculture sector remains crucial to India’s development, and any negative impact on it would reverberate throughout the economy.

“A low pressure persisting over southwest Rajasthan was drawing moisture from the Arabian Sea to western Madhya Pradesh. Causing rainfall, said Ved Prakash Singh, senior meteorologist at the IMD Bhopal Centre.

Apart from this, a cyclonic circulation over south-east Madhya Pradesh was drawing moisture. From the Bay of Bengal to eastern parts of the state”. He said.

Himachal Pradesh is flooded with deaths. This year has been the reminder of the apocalypse many times, in many instances. Chamoli, Maharashtra, and now, Himachal Pradesh are dying like never before. This is an abstract report because the format of the rescue operation is also ideational.

Sudesh Kumar Mokhta said, Private JCB got worn down and took two tents of the laborer with it. Havoc got created everywhere and so ITBP teams & state police were sent to search and excavate missing people but a sudden tide of water came and thrashed the strategy.

It wasn’t that serious but due to cloudburst, it became a disaster. Ten people are missing and one got injured due to this natural blast in Lahaul-Spiti. As per the declaration of an official from the Disaster Management Team.

Officials from Police Department said, two workers of Airtel Videocon Telecommunications Ltd (VTL), four people from Border Roads Organization, and four travelers who were reaching towards Pangi-Killar but got a subtle shock of threatening near-death experience.

Traffic gets hampered when this kind of activity happens. Nature starts destroying mankind from every dimension. Manali-Leh, Keylong-Udaipur, Gramphu-Kaza got trapped at the moment. Various landslides are causing diverse threats, several roads are in a blocked state whereas 60 vehicles are abandoned due to prospective predicament.

Everywhere IMD is issuing red alerts and orange alerts due to the outbreak of floods and landslides. If we take a look at blockades and affected parts, 190 roads are blocked. Mandi with the highest count has 79 roads with barricades. 78 in Shimla and just 15 in Chamba. Bharari has become the wettest region to date after experiencing 76 mm of rainfall. Many more people are missing and excavation is still going on in various parts.
