Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) stands as a cornerstone in India's defence and aerospace sector, wielding significant influence and commanding a crucial role in national security. Yet, recent incidents raise serious questions about its operational integrity and the efficacy of its oversight mechanisms.

In a concerning turn of events, a Sukhoi fighter aircraft, Su-30 MKI, belonging to the Indian Air Force (IAF), crashed in Maharashtra’s Nashik district on Tuesday. The incident, occurring at a field near Shirasgaon village of Nifad tehsil, saw the pilot and co-pilot ejecting safely before the plane went down at approximately 1:20 pm.

Wing Commander Bokil and his second-in-command Biswas, who were piloting the aircraft, sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) hospital. Preliminary reports indicate that a technical snag was reported by the pilots, although the exact cause remains to be determined pending a thorough investigation.

Following the crash, a statement from HAL revealed that the Su-30 MKI was on a test sortie from their Nashik facility when the incident occurred. Teams from both the Indian Air Force and HAL’s security and technical wings promptly visited the crash site, where parts of the aircraft were found scattered over a 500-meter radius.

Sources within the IAF informed that the aircraft was undergoing flight testing post-overhaul, having been in HAL’s inventory for maintenance and testing purposes. Despite being a crucial defence partner, HAL’s handling of the overhaul and testing procedures is now under scrutiny.

Developed by Russian aircraft manufacturer Sukhoi, the Su-30MKI is renowned for its air superiority capabilities, but this incident casts a shadow on HAL’s ability to ensure the safety and reliability of these sophisticated aircraft. As investigations continue into the Nashik crash, stakeholders will be closely monitoring HAL’s response and implementation of corrective measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

HAL’s troubles: Is India’s defence giant too big to fail?

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) stands as a cornerstone in India’s defence and aerospace sector, wielding significant influence and commanding a crucial role in national security. Yet, recent incidents raise serious questions about its operational integrity and the efficacy of its oversight mechanisms.

The crash of an Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30 MKI in Maharashtra’s Nashik district has once again brought HAL under scrutiny. Despite being entrusted with the maintenance and testing of sophisticated aircraft like the Su-30MKI, HAL’s track record appears marred by recurrent technical issues and safety lapses.

However, HAL’s seemingly unassailable position in the defence industry complicates matters. While other companies might face severe repercussions for consecutive mishaps, HAL appears insulated from such consequences. Even in the wake of the Nashik crash, HAL’s Chairman and Managing Director, CB Ananthakrishnan, touted substantial orders worth billions of rupees and hinted at a stable future trajectory during Aero India 2023.

Surprisingly, HAL’s stock prices remain steady, indicating resilient investor confidence, albeit tinged with a cautious eye on unfolding developments. Yet, amidst the clamour for swift reforms and the imperative to restore trust among partners and customers, HAL’s entrenched influence emerges as a formidable obstacle.

Despite calls for change and suggestions for a way forward, HAL’s sprawling presence and entrenched position within India’s defense ecosystem seem to hinder the rapid implementation of necessary reforms. The company’s expansive reach and deep-seated ties within the defence establishment create a complex landscape where accountability and reform often face formidable challenges.

HAL’s rush for production targets compromises aircraft quality

In a troubling revelation, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is under scrutiny for compromising aircraft quality in its pursuit to meet production targets. The rush to fulfil deadlines, particularly towards the end of the financial year, has led to significant concerns regarding the reliability and safety of aircraft engines produced by the Indian aerospace major.

An investigation into HAL’s operational practices reveals a disturbing trend. In a particular year, HAL expedited the overhaul of four MiG-29 aircraft engines within the last three months of the financial year, compared to the usual nine-month timeframe. This drastic compression of time, by 50%, undoubtedly raises questions about the thoroughness and integrity of the maintenance process, potentially compromising the quality of work output.

Furthermore, HAL’s handling of the fourth-generation Su-30 MKI program has also come under scrutiny. Despite being entrusted with manufacturing and maintaining these sophisticated aircraft, HAL’s performance has been found lacking. The fleet has been plagued by serious technical problems, leading to several incidents of aircraft loss due to technical failure. Most recently, a harrowing incident involving two pilots being unexpectedly ejected from the cockpit while approaching the runway underscores the gravity of HAL’s quality control issues.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has borne the brunt of these quality lapses, with significant losses incurred over the years. Nearly half of the MiG fleet has been lost, along with the tragic loss of nearly 200 fighter pilots. The majority of these accidents have been attributed to flaws in manufacturing or deficiencies in the overhaul process, with HAL often reluctant to address these quality issues head-on.

Notably, HAL’s credibility took a severe blow when Dassault Aviation of France expressed reluctance to partner with HAL for the production of Rafale combat jets due to concerns over quality assurance and delivery schedules. This hesitation dealt a significant blow to a long-drawn tender for 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft, highlighting the repercussions of HAL’s quality control shortcomings.

The Hawk AJT crash in 2015 serves as another stark example of HAL’s quality woes. Reports indicate that the Rolls-Royce engine, manufactured under license by HAL, failed to meet the OEM’s quality standards, leading to a reduction in the time between engine overhauls for Hawk AJTs manufactured by HAL.

As stakeholders call for greater accountability and transparency within HAL, the onus is on the aerospace giant to address these systemic shortcomings and prioritize the safety and reliability of its products.

HAL’s turbulent journey: From stability to technical glitches and delayed deliveries

For two decades, pilots of the Indian Armed Forces have lauded the stability of the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) and its variants, with the Indian Air Force’s aerobatics team, Sarang, showcasing its prowess with gravity-defying manoeuvres. However, recent years have seen a troubling surge in reports of ‘sudden loss of power’ and ‘control failure’ in the ALH fleet, leading to a string of crashes and emergency landings.

In the past three to four years alone, nine incidents involving crashes and emergency landings due to technical glitches have been recorded, prompting concerns among pilots and aviation experts. The October 2022 crash in Arunachal Pradesh, marked by a distress call indicating possible mechanical failure, stands as a grim reminder of the challenges faced by HAL in ensuring the safety and reliability of its aircraft.

Aviation experts and former military personnel are urging the government to hold HAL accountable for these lapses, emphasizing the critical need for robust oversight and stringent quality control measures. Control failures, which render aircraft unresponsive to pilot inputs, pose grave risks to flight safety and demand urgent attention from HAL and regulatory authorities.

Despite assurances from HAL officials regarding the robustness of their design and production processes, questions linger over the efficacy of their safety protocols and the adequacy of their response to emerging challenges.

The ALH fleet, comprising various variants including ALH Mark II, ALH Mark III, ALH Mark IV, and ALH-WSI, has been hailed for its twin-engine configuration and the powerful ‘Shakti engine,’ enabling operations at altitudes of up to 21,000 feet. However, recent incidents have cast a shadow over the fleet’s reliability and raised questions about HAL’s ability to maintain stringent safety standards.

In addition to the ALH debacle, HAL has faced criticism for delays in the delivery of Tejas jets, a flagship indigenous aircraft program. Despite ambitious targets, HAL fell short of its commitments, leading to delays of seven years in the delivery of 40 Tejas jets. The Standing Committee of Parliament highlighted HAL’s role in these delays, citing various factors including sanctions imposed on India after the 1998 nuclear tests.

To address these concerns, Rear Admiral Asthana suggested the establishment of a multi-agency body comprising HAL, government agencies, and the armed forces to oversee the Tejas production and ensure timely development. This collaborative approach, he argues, could help streamline production processes and mitigate delays in future defence projects.

HAL, for its part, remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering quality products and meeting operational requirements. The company asserts that all flight safety measures are in place and that it will continue to serve its customers with dedication and integrity.

Despite these assurances, the spectre of accountability looms large, particularly in light of past incidents involving the MiG-21 fleet. Accusations of poor maintenance and inadequate quality control have dogged HAL for years, with crashes and fatalities underscoring the urgency of addressing systemic shortcomings.

As India strives to bolster its defence capabilities and enhance indigenous manufacturing, the onus is on HAL to restore trust and confidence in its capabilities.

While HAL plays a crucial role in India’s defence and aerospace sector, recent incidents highlight systemic shortcomings in oversight, quality control, and timely delivery of critical equipment. As investigations into these incidents continue, stakeholders must prioritize accountability, transparency, and reform within HAL to uphold the safety and integrity of India’s defence apparatus.

Fighter director Siddharth Anand says the IAF loved their film and is in absolute conjunction with the film.

Fighter is doing wonders at the box office and has attained a Rs 300 crore benchmark globally. Helmed by Siddharth Anand, the film has its theatrical release on the 25th of January. The film features Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Karan Singh Grover, Anil Kapoor and Akshay Oberoi in key roles.

The action entertainer is receiving high-scale appreciation from the film and is buzzing on the internet. Apart from its widespread applause, Fighter has also been landed into legal problems. A few days ago, legal notice was given by IAF officer Saumya Deep Das for the portrayal of intimate scenes in the movie. Though the concern was majorly on doing such acts in the military uniform, that was seen as disrespectful.

Now, according to a recent report, it has come to light that the makers of the film has already received an NOC or a no objection certificate. In an interview by ETimes, Siddharth Anand was being asked about the ongoing Fiasco. He replied by stating that the film is in complete conjunction with the IAF. , “I am glad to answer this question. This film is in complete conjunction with the IAF.

He further stated “IAF has been a co-collaborator on the film and has been a huge associate partner of our film. This film has gone through meticulous procedures with the IAF. Right from the submission of the script to the production planning viewing of the film, before the censor saw the film at the censor board watching it again with the IAF, reviewing the film after the sensor and then giving as a physical copy of the NOC the no objection certificate after that we got the censor certificate. Then we show the film to everyone in the Air force including the Air force chief Mr Chaudhary 100 Air force marshalls in the country we called them and hosted the screening for them one day before the since release in Delhi and they gave us a standing ovation.”

Fighter is also being banned from releasing in Gulf countries as the portrayal of a certain religion in the movie has caused a grave problem. Despite this, the movie is getting worldwide acclaim and has earned a massive profit.

Indian Armed Forces are considering the induction of transgender individuals into their ranks. This initiative is a response to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.

A special committee has been established to evaluate the potential roles and job opportunities for transgender individuals within the Armed Forces. The committee is also tasked with understanding the implications of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, to ensure an equitable and inclusive approach.

The Act, which aims to protect the rights of transgender individuals, prohibits any form of discrimination, including in the workplace. It also calls for the development of welfare schemes and programs to support the livelihood of transgender persons, including vocational training and self-employment.

This initiative by the Indian Armed Forces marks a significant stride towards inclusivity and diversity. It reflects the broader societal transformation towards acknowledging and respecting the rights of transgender persons.

However, the specifics of this inclusion, such as the roles and responsibilities of transgender individuals in the Armed Forces, are yet to be defined. The ongoing discussions and studies will be instrumental in shaping the future of transgender individuals in the Indian Armed Forces. This progressive step by the Indian Armed Forces symbolizes the evolving attitudes and growing acceptance of transgender individuals in society. It represents a significant milestone in the pursuit of equality and the recognition of transgender rights in India.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) said goodbye to some of its old MiG-21 fighter planes.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) said goodbye to some of its old MiG-21 fighter planes. These planes have been guarding India’s skies for many years. The MiG-21 Bisons from No. 4 Squadron in Rajasthan are the ones retiring. They’ve been flying since 1966. Soon, this squadron will start using new Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft. The other two squadrons in Bikaner and Suratgarh will also retire these planes by 2025.

The retirement of the MiG-21s is a big change for the Indian Air Force (IAF). They’re saying goodbye to these old planes and welcoming a new kind of aircraft called the LCA Mk-1A. This shows that the IAF wants to rely more on their own planes, made in India. They’ll start using the LCA Mk-1A next year, and the first one should arrive in February 2024. The IAF has ordered 83 of these new planes, and they’ll get them all by 2027-28. They’re even thinking of getting 97 more of these planes. It’s a way for the IAF to modernize and depend on their own defense technology.

The decision to retire the MiG-21s is driven by a series of unfortunate accidents involving these aircraft. Over the past six decades, more than 400 MiG-21s have been involved in accidents resulting in the tragic loss of approximately 200 pilots. The MiG-21’s high accident rate can be attributed to its long years of service, where it constituted the bulk of the IAF’s fighter fleet for an extended period.

The induction of the LCA Mk-1As represents a pivotal moment in the IAF’s modernization journey. These indigenous aircraft, developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), are expected to seamlessly take over from the retiring MiG-21s. With HAL capable of producing 16 LCA Mk-1As annually in Bengaluru and a new production line in Nashik, the production capacity is set to increase to 24 jets per year. This strategic shift towards indigenization aligns perfectly with the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative, embodying India’s resolute commitment to self-reliance in defense technology.

The retirement of the MiG-21s and the induction of the LCA Mk-1As mark a significant milestone for the IAF and the nation as a whole. It signifies India’s unwavering determination to bolster its defense capabilities and reduce its dependence on foreign-made aircraft. This heralds a new era in indigenous defense manufacturing and national security.

On the sidelines of the summit, he will hold bilateral talks with his Uzbek counterpart Lt General Nizamovich.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will fly to Tashkent Uzbekistan tomorrow, 23rd August to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit (SCO) of Defence Ministers.

On the sidelines of the summit, he will hold bilateral talks with his Uzbek counterpart Lt General Nizamovich.

Discussions on counter-terrorism will be the key focus of the meeting.

Defence ministers of Russia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and host Uzbekistan will be present at the summit.

The full-fledged summit will be held next month on 22nd September.

He has also planned interaction with the Indian community present in Uzbekistan.

Today, Rajnath Singh will be presiding over a high-level meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council. This crucial meeting will have discussions of DAC granting the defence forces emergency acquisition powers to procure crucial systems. This will allow the armed forces to purchase crucial weapon systems through fast-track routes.

This will include procurement of much need equipment like artillery, bulletproof vests and various other systems like swarm drones for the army.

These purchases have stretched the armed forces’ preparedness and readiness as acquisitions like the Israeli Heron reconnaissance drone, HAMMER air-to-ground bombs for Rafale and Sig Saur 716 rifles have been procured.

The armed forces have extensively used this power to strengthen their position in times of conflict and the government has granted them these powers in phases.

Indian Armed Forces have procured foreign and Indian-made weapons using such powers.

A pre-DAC meeting is also on his agenda and the three chiefs of all the branches of the armed forces are set to attend that meeting.

A high-level meeting will be held next week by the ministry of defence to discuss and grant these special powers to the armed.

India is likely to allow the defence forces to have emergency powers to procure some crucial systems via a fast-track route. This is to improve the armed forces’ operational preparedness in times of emergency.

These powers were first granted shortly after the Uri Surgical Strikes in 2016 when tensions with the Pakistanis escalated. They have been also used during the India-China Standoff which started in April 2020.

A high-level meeting will be held next week by the ministry of defence to discuss and grant these special powers to the armed.

As reported by ANI, in the previous approvals, the defence forces have signed contracts worth Rs 300 crore and equipment has been delivered within 3 months.

These powers are being granted to the armed forces yet again seeing Chinese aggression towards Taiwan and in the South China Sea lately and Pakistani agencies trying to carry out some operations along India’s maritime borders.

The exercise will be held for four days, in which, different combat scenariors will be emulated and demonstrated.

A contingent of the Indian Air Force has left for Malaysia where both the Indian Air Force and Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will hold a bilateral exercise under the name of Udarashakti.

This is the first bilateral exercise between the IAF and RMAF and it will take place in Kuantan’s air force base which is located to the East of Kuala Lumpur.

The Indian Air Force will be participating with its Su30 MKIs and C-17 Globemaster while the RMAF will fly their SU30MKM.

This exercise will give an opportunity to the IAF to share and learn new combat experiences with their Malaysian counterparts.

Udarashakti is aimed to increase inter-operability between the two air forces and enhance defence cooperation between the two nations to counter threats.

The exercise will be held for four days, in which, different combat scenariors will be emulated and demonstrated.

This news shortly breaks after the Minister of State of Defence, Ajay Bhatt said that the Royal Malaysian Air force had expressed the desire to purchase India’s indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas to replace its ageing Mig-29s.

Both the nations have a shared threat from the Chinese as India has witnessed aggression on its northern borders and Malaysia has been entangled in a border dispute over uninhabited but strategically located islands in the South China Sea and thus been a victim of Chinese bullying and aggression.

The Malaysians have turned their heads towards the Indians to counter the Chinese threat.

The Mig-21 has a nasty record of 400 crashes that have killed over 200 pilots in the past 60 years of their service.

Amid the recent crash of MiG-21 in Barmer district of Rajasthan that killed both pilots Flight Lieutenant A Bal and Wing Commander Rana. A source from the IAF said that the airforce is planning to retire a squadron on 30th September.

The IAF is keen on hanging the boots for these Soviet-era jets as many of them are over 40 years old and have a nasty record of 400 crashes that have killed over 200 pilots in the past 60 years of their service.

In the last 20 months, 6 MiG-21’s have crashed killing 5 pilots.

IAF to retire MiG-21 squadron

This IAF aircraft has earned the nicknames “flying coffin” and “widow maker” for its high crash rates.

A squadron is a group of 12-18 aircraft.

On the 30th of September, the 51st Squadron, nicknamed “The Strong Arms” is said to be retired.

“The number-plated squadron would be reactivated soon with a more capable aircraft in the near future”, the officials said

The squadron is based out of Srinagar Airforce Station. This is the same squadron that thwarted Pakistan’s Operation Swift Retort which was a retaliation to the IAF’s Balakot Airstrike.

Wing Commander Abhinandan Vartaman (Now Group Captain) was flying a MiG-21 of the same squadron that shot down a Pakistani F-16 Falcon, thus earning the squadron another nickname “Falcon Slayers” and “AAMRAM Dodgers”.

Badge of the Squadron Number 51, The Strong Arms. This was given after successfully thwarting the PAF’s air raids

This was the only case in which a MiG-21 shot down an F-16 in actual air-to-air combat.

The IAF was set to phase out these jets a long time back. And replace them with the indigenously built Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. Due to delays in the induction of these new jets. The IAF is compelled to continue to fly the Soviet-era fighter.

An official from the IAF stated, “The IAF carries out extensive checks on these planes before flying and all safety aspects are taken care of before the pilot takes off.”

Yet another unfortunate incident of the MiG-21 fighter jet continues. IAF has officially announced the death of both the pilots in the Barmer crash.

On Thursday late evening, an Indian Air Force (IAF) MiG-21 fighter jet crashed a few kilometres from Barmer, Rajasthan. The IAF stated that it has information about a potential crash in a statement. “We are gathering information”, it continued. When the crash occurred, the MiG was conducting a sortie over the Baytu region. The precise cause of the crash is still unknown.

Around 9.10 p.m., while flying at night, the twin-seater MiG-21 trainer that had taken off from the Uttarlai airstrip crashed close to the village of Bhimda. Local collector Lok Bandu confirms that both the pilots died in the crash. Both of the pilots died from their fatal injuries. Images from the scene showed flames spreading out from the fighter’s wreckage across a wide region.

Even as Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, phoned the IAF head Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari to inquire about the disaster, the IAF has set a court of inquiry to determine the precise cause of the crash.

Deeply anguished by the loss of two Air Warriors due to an accident of IAF’s Mig-21 trainer aircraft near Barmer in Rajasthan. Their service to the nation will never be forgotten. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of sadness. https://t.co/avKi9YoMdo

— Rajnath Singh (@rajnathsingh) July 28, 2022

Since January last year, at least six MiG-21 aircraft have crashed, killing five pilots. In the last five years alone, at least 44 military personnel have died in a total of 46 aircraft and helicopter mishaps. Particularly, the older MiG-21s of Soviet provenance, the IAF’s first true supersonic fighters introduced in 1963, have had a high crash rate over time.

MiG-21s ought to have been retired a long time ago. But after upgrading its four MiG-21 squadrons to “Bison” standards, the IAF still uses the indigenous Tejas light combat aircraft (LCA), which has a capacity of 16–18 aircraft. This is due to the enormous delays in the introduction of new fighters.

The deal was signed between India & Russia about 10 years ago for the procurement of 80 Mi-17 V5 helicopters.

According to a report by ANI, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has shelved its deal with Russia to buy 48 Mi-17 V5 medium lifts helicopters. This move has come at times when the government is promoting ‘Make in India’ in the defence sector.

The deal was signed between India & Russia about 10 years ago for the procurement of 80 Mi-17 V5 helicopters. Amongst which these 48 were pending to be added to the IAF commend fleet. “It has been decided to close the deal. The decision was taken that the force would support the indigenous medium-lift helicopter programme,” a person familiar with the matter told ANI.

As per the report, the decision to suspend the deal was taken before the Russia-Ukraine war started, as to promote the indigenous technologies in the defence sector. Mi-17 V5 helicopters are one of the most important assets of IAF, they are used to maintain India’s position in the Himalayan ranges & are also used by the President & Prime Minister of the country.

The IAF had to deploy two Mi 17 V5 helicopters for Bambi Bucket operations to douse the massive fire that spread over large areas of Sariska Tiger Reserve.

New Delhi, March 29: The IAF had to deploy two Mi 17 V5 helicopters for Bambi Bucket operations to douse the massive fire that spread over large areas of Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan on Tuesday. The two choppers are engaged in firefighting operation following requests made by administration in Alwar in this regard. The local administration took help of the locals to control the fire and created a fire line in the jungles to arrest the spread of the blazes. Despite efforts, the fire has spread over approximately nine square km of area endangering wildlife and ecology in the sanctuary. The IAF has been instrumental in putting out forest fires in Uttarakhand and in the north east regions. The helicopter uses a 5000 litre Bambi Bucket to collect the water from nearby water bodies and sprays it over the blaze so as to prevent it from spreading further.

Indian Air Force has deployed the fourth-generation aircraft along the border in the ongoing standoff with China.

Out of the 36 Rafale aircraft for which India had contracted with France, 32 have been delivered and out of the remaining four three will arrive in India on time, that is, in February next year said ACM Vivek Ram Chaudhari.

While reviewing the Combined Graduation Parade at Dundigal Air Force Academy, the IAF chief said, As far as discussions on Rafale are concerned, we’re thankful to the French government for the timely deliveries.

He further added that the last rafale aircraft which will have India-specific enhancements will be delivered by the French government. “We discussed the future maintenance issues of Rafale and setting up a Maintenance, Repair, Overhaul (MRO) centre here in India,” said the IAF Chief.

The IAF Chief’s remarks came a day after France recognises that they can provide more Rafale aircraft if India wants them.

In New Delhi, while attending an annual defence dialogue, the French Defense Minister said, “We are ready to provide any additional needs or requests that could be made by India. We know that the Indian Navy was soon to get the delivery of its second aircraft carrier INS Vikrant for which it would need more fighter aircraft. So we are open and ready to provide any other rafale if chosen by India”.

India and France signed a contract in 2016 as part of which 36 Rafale were to be inducted into the Air Force by 2022. More than 32 aircraft have already been delivered while the rest of the lot would be here by the mid next year.

When Pakistan initiated retaliation against India for the Balakot bombings a day before, Varthaman shot down a Pakistani plane on February 27, 2019.

Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman of the Indian Air Force has been promoted to Group Captain. According to sources acquainted with the situation, the officer has been cleared for promotion to the rank of Group Captain by the IAF, and Abhinandan Varthaman will be wearing his new title soon. In the Indian Army, a Group Captain is the equivalent of a colonel.

After shooting down the F-16, Abhinandan’s MiG-21 fighter plane was shot down by enemy troops, and he landed in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), where the Pakistan Army apprehended him. The Pakistan Army was forced to release him after intense pressure from India and international intervention.

On February 27, 2019, Abhinandan, a member of the 51 squadrons based in Srinagar, swooped in to foil a Pakistani aerial strike. In the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region of Pakistan, India launched an aerial strike on the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist facility.

Following the strike, approximately two dozen fighter planes, including F-16s, took off from Pakistani bases with the intention of attacking Indian military targets. However, the Indian Air Force was prepared for such an attack and an aerial duel followed. Wing Commander Varthaman ended up shooting down a Pakistani F-16 fighter plane and getting hurt in the process.

Despite the fact that Wing Commander Varthaman made it out safely, he was apprehended. Imran Khan, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, confirmed the capture. India urged that he be returned unconditionally and safely. The United States was involved in the officer’s release at the time. He arrived in India safely.

An Indian Air Force (IAF) transport aircraft on Saturday took off from Kabul with 85 Indians, as part of the evacuation process that commenced after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, ANI reported.

“An Indian Air Force C-130J transport aircraft took off from Kabul with over 85 Indians. The aircraft landed in Tajikistan for refuelling. Indian government officials are helping in the evacuation of Indian citizens on the ground in Kabul,” sources told ANI.

IAF had already evacuated 180 Indians from Afghanistan. Earlier, India had also rescued consulate members from Kandahar, before the Taliban took control of the city. The Indian officials from the Kandahar consulate had later stationed themselves in the Kabul embassy and were overseeing work from there, ANI reported.

Panic gripped people as the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan on August 15. Soon after President Ashraf Ghani fled the country to ‘avoid bloodshed. People in a desperate attempt to flee the country clung to a US military plane.

Taliban in their first press conference after taking control of the country said that they will not inflict any harm on embassy officials and foreign citizens. They also declared a ‘general amnesty’ for government officials who were urged to return to the offices. They also assured that women’s rights will be protected.

According to the latest report published in The Tribune, the unknown drone turned out to be a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), associated with the Jammu base of IAF.

An Israeli-made drone specially designed for the Indian Air Force has incidentally crash-landed due to an unruly technical snag in the mechanics. The IAF Searcher drone was found in Gurdaspur’s Malogil village in Punjab that reportedly arrived from the Jammu base (PoK).

According to the latest report published in The Tribune, the unknown drone turned out to be a remotely piloted aircraft (RPA), associated with the Jammu base of IAF. The preliminary details revealed by the police say that the pilot of the drone, with no weapons attached, supposedly lost control and as a result, the drone diverted towards the paddy fields.

The police administration had a hard time tackling the group of 500 villagers who gathered at the spot. The administration also sent PCR vehicles and motorcycles to take cognizance of the amplifying rumours that led to heavy chaos amongst the crowd. This action was initiated to curb the further spread of misinformation.

Earlier, there have been instances where drones from Pakistan intruded into our Indian spaces with attached ammunitions.

Gurdaspur’s SSP Nanak Singh derived the information regarding the drone from a source stating, “a big helicopter had fallen at a village after hovering in the sky for 10-15 minutes.”

However, the chaos was brought under control by the police officials averring that the landed drone is not dangerous.

On Friday Afternoon, in South Bengaluru, a loud noise was heard which brought back memories of the sonic boom of last year, and the officials were now checking to see if it had been another sonic book from an IAF jet.

In May last year, across Bengaluru a mysterious noise had been heard which rattled the citizens as the theories and the rumors about the major boom spread like wildfire. The Indian Air Force soon revealed that it had been the IAF Test Flight invasion a supersonic profile that took off from the Bengaluru airport that resulted in the sonic boom.

DCP South on the loud noise heard on Friday said that it seemed like a sonic boom and there was nothing on the ground, HAL was close by and in the previous two days, Tejas sorties were happening. It looked like a sonic boom as of now to them.

The DCP added that they had sent out their forces all over but there was nothing on the ground.

The Bengaluru residents took to Twitter and other social media platforms to report that a loud boom had been heard in many parts of the city and according to the users, the sound was heard on Friday at 12:23 p.m.

A few people feared that it could have been an earthquake, whereas a few asked whether it had been a blast that shook up the city over again, however, most of the people wondered if it had been another sonic boom that was caused by an IAF flight like the previous year.

A senior government official has reportedly maintained that India has enough oxygen supply however, its transportation is a challenge.

India is in the midst of a devastating second wave of COVID-19 – witnessing an unprecedented spike in the cases and deaths. The country is recording more than a quarter-million cases per day.

While several states have seen a surge in the demand for medical oxygen, a senior government official on Monday informed that the country has enough medical oxygen but its transportation is a challenge. He further added that the Centre and State governments are working together to minimise the time taken in the movement of tankers, reported news agency ANI.

“There is no need to panic. I assure you that at present union government and state governments have enough oxygen. The transportation is a challenge, as the demand for tankers suddenly grew. The Centre and state governments are working together to minimise the time of transportation,” Piyush Goyal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, said at a joint press conference on the Covid-19 situation on Monday.

“India is ordering oxygen tankers from abroad on a purchase or hiring basis. Using real-time tracking, we are monitoring the movement of oxygen tankers,” he added.

The Coronavirus scare has triggered a demand for medical supplies, however, efforts are being from all quarters as the UK government has dispatched ventilators and oxygen concentrator devices to India to help the nation retain its grasp over the Covid-19 pandemic.

The British High Commission in a press statement said that the UK was dispatching “more than 600 pieces of vital medical equipment” to “ support the country in its fight against Covid-19.”

On Saturday, SpiceXpress, the air cargo arm of SpiceJet airlifted 800 oxygen concentrators from Hong Kong to Delhi amid the nation’s crippling shortage of medical oxygen triggered by the second wave of coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Monday (April 26), airlifted six empty cryogenic oxygen containers from Dubai and positioned them at Panagarh, West Bengal for refilling.

Furthermore, 2 containers were airlifted from Jaipur to Jamnagar for the same, reported the news agency ANI.

PM Narendra Modi on Friday chaired a high high-level meeting with Chief Ministers of states burdened by the COVID-19 situation and noted that the virus is affecting several states as well as Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities at once.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, chaired a high-level meeting on COVID-19 situation with chief ministers of 11 states and union territories which have reported the maximum number of cases recently.

Noting that the virus is affecting several states as well as Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities at once, PM Modi called for working together to fight the pandemic with collective power, reported the news agency ANI.

The recent development comes after several states in India have flagged concerns over the unprecedented spike in the novel coronavirus cases. This has ultimately increased the demand for medical supplies leading to the healthcare crisis in India.

In the meeting held on Friday, PM Modi recalled the nation’s success over the first wave of the pandemic was due to India’s united efforts and united strategy. He maintained that we will have to address this challenge in the same way.

He assured the Centre’s full support to all the states and in this fight and added that the Ministry of Health is also in touch with the states and is monitoring the situation closely. He further added that the Health Ministry will also issue necessary advice to the states from time to time.

In the last few days, several states have been battling with shortage of oxygen supply in the country. While the Chief Ministers repeatedly urged the centre for the medical supplies, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Thursday, appointed two senior bureaucrats as nodal officers to ensure smooth movement of tankers and facilitate oxygen supply to city hospitals.

Reflecting upon the current shortage of oxygen supply in the Nation, PM Modi took note of the points raised by the states.

All the concerned departments and ministries of the government are also working together. Industrial oxygen has also been diverted to meet immediate requirements, said PM Modi as reported by the news agency ANI.

PM Modi in his address to the Chief Ministers, urged all states to work together and coordinate with one-another to fulfil requirements relating to medicines and oxygen. He urged the states to check hoarding and black marketing of oxygen and medicines.

Modi said that every state should ensure that no oxygen tanker, whether it is meant for any state, is stopped or gets stranded.

Urging the states to set up a high-level co-ordination committee to carry oxygen to different hospitals of the state, he said that this Co-ordination Committee should ensure that as soon as there is allotment of oxygen from the centre, it can deliver oxygen as per requirement in different hospitals of the state immediately.

PM informed the Chief Ministers that yesterday he chaired a meeting on oxygen supply and will be attending one today to discuss all the options for increasing the oxygen supply, said PM Narendra Modi.

He also assured that the central government is working on all possible options to reduce the travel time and turnaround time of oxygen tankers. For this, Railways has started Oxygen Express. Empty Oxygen tankers are also being transported by the Air-Force to reduce one way travel time.

Indian Air Force has joined forces with the states and it is now supporting the fight against Covid virus.

Earlier in the day, a video of IAF air lifting the oxygen tankers also surfaced on the internet and it has reportedly brought in to speed up the oxygen supply as the country facing shortage.

The Prime Minister further mentioned that along with upgrading of resources, we have to focus on testing. He emphasized that widespread testing should be conducted so that people get the facility easily.

In the meeting held through video conferencing on Friday, PM Modi asserted that the vaccination programme should not slow down in this situation.

PM Modi mentioned that India is running the world’s largest vaccination programme and so far, more than 15 crore vaccine doses have been provided free of cost to the states by the Government of India, reported the news agency ANI.

The campaign launched by the Central Government to provide free vaccines for all the citizens will also continue in the same manner, said PM Narendra Modi.

Meanwhile, the nation is all set to witness a huge vaccination drive since May 1, 2021. PM Modi added, the vaccine is going to be available to all citizens above 18 years of age. We will also need to work in mission mode to get more and more people vaccinated.

PM Modi expressed his grief on recent incidents of oxygen leakage and fire at hospitals, and said that the administrative staff of the hospital needs to be made more aware about the safety protocols.

Earlier, a presentation was given by Dr VK Paul, which highlighted the preparations being done to counter the new surge of infections. Dr Paul also presented the roadmap for increasing the medical facilities and targeted treatment of patients. He briefed everyone about Boosting of Medical infrastructure, teams and supplies; Clinical Management; Containment; Vaccination & Community engagement, reported the news agency ANI.

During the interaction, Chief Ministers of states briefed the PM about the steps being taken by respective State Governments in the current wave.

They also noted that the directions given by the PM and the road map presented by NITI would help them plan their responses in a better way, reported the news agency ANI.

Efforts by IAF focus on cutting travel time of empty containers to places where oxygen is available or produced.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is ferrying empty oxygen tankers to filling stations across the country, pressing its transport fleet into action at a time when SOS calls for medical oxygen are ringing out from different corners.

On Twitter, IAF has said that it’s transport fleet is supporting the fight against Covid-19, while also airlifting “medical personnel, critical equipment and medicines”.

IAF aircraft C-17, IL-76, C-130 J, AN-32 and AVROS are crisscrossing the Indian skies to eliminate supply obstacles in the distribution of oxygen, a life-saving resource for critical Covid-19 patients. “Our effort is to give logistical help to ease distribution bottlenecks,” a top official in the defence ministry said.

#IndiaFightsCorona

C-17 and IL-76 aircraft airlifted cryogenic oxygen containers from Air Force Station Hindan to Panagarh for recharging, in support of the fight against Covid-19. Similar airlift tasks are underway across the country. pic.twitter.com/1GMdOBRqWY

— Indian Air Force (@IAF_MCC) April 23, 2021

Oxygen is combustible and considered risky to be carried on flights. While the gaseous form is still allowed, liquid oxygen is not. Though both passenger and freight flights are allowed to carry oxygen cylinders under a law dealing with the transport of what are known as “dangerous goods” on air, the permissible quantity is such that it may not help in a public health crisis. That law, however, does not apply to military aircraft.

For now, efforts by IAF focus on cutting travel time of empty containers to places where oxygen is available or produced. The containers supplied by IAF are filled with oxygen and sent to their final destinations by road.

In the wake of the ongoing crisis, it has emerged that transport bottlenecks are a big hurdle in supplying oxygen to hospitals. Media reports have pointed out that the country didn’t have enough cryogenic tankers for round-the-clock transport of medical oxygen — which is prepared in liquid form and then converted to its gaseous form by distributors who makes supplies to hospitals.

With the health crisis deepening in the country, IAF’s transport fleet has been on the job for the last two days. Two C-17 Globemasters have airlifted two empty cryogenic oxygen containers, while an IL-76 has ferried an empty container to Panagarh.

Eight containers have been airlifted from Hyderabad to Odisha, where they will be filled. Oxygen containers from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Bengaluru, have been sent to Delhi, where the crisis is acute.

#IndiaFightsCorona

The IAF transport fleet is supporting the fight against Covid-19. Air lift of medical personnel, critical equipment and medicines is underway for Covid Hospitals and facilities across the country. pic.twitter.com/eBHv2yicyR

— Indian Air Force (@IAF_MCC) April 21, 2021

Several Covid-19 patients are found to have low oxygen levels in their blood, according to experts. They say this could happen even in asymptomatic patients and such a condition might indicate that a patient needs medical attention. In the unsparing second wave that is battering India, more cases of breathlessness have been witnessed than in the previous wave, increasing the requirement of medical oxygen in the country.

Not just oxygen, IAF has ferried doctors and nursing staff from Kochi, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Bengaluru to DRDO’s Covid-19 hospital in Delhi that has 500 beds. The force has airlifted a Covid testing set-up to Leh as well. India is also reaching out to friendly countries for empty containers that will be airlifted by IAF on an emergency basis.

Twenty-three mobile oxygen generation plants could be brought from Germany and deployed in hospitals across the country. “We are on standby, awaiting formal orders for the mission,” a senior IAF official said.

At the same time, 32 of the Indian Army’s wagons that carry big guns and tanks on rail routes are being used to transport oxygen. Meanwhile, the armed forces are facing a Covid crisis of their own. Though about 99% of the personnel have received the first jab, and 85% have received both shots of Covid-19 vaccines, army hospitals are flooded with patients.

On Wednesday, Brigadier RS Parmar, a veteran, died of Covid-related complications on his way to Chandigarh, as no beds were available at an Army Hospital in Delhi Cantonment or any other facility in Delhi.

In such a scenario, the Army Hospital in Delhi is being converted into a 1,000-bed Covid hospital. It should be fully activated within a week. Defence minister Rajnath Singh has asked the forces to open their hospitals to civilians at this crisis hour wherever possible. The forces are also in the process of reaching out to their retired doctors to man the Covid hospitals DRDO is setting up across the country. DRDO, which makes high-end military missiles and surveillance systems, is now concentrating its energies to make “pop-up” Covid hospitals in major centres.
