Nissan Motor and Honda Motor are exploring using standardized automotive software and collaborating on electric car charging, according to the Nikkei newspaper on Thursday, both of which might reduce their costs.

Nissan and Honda stated in March that they were considering a strategic collaboration to produce EV components as they seek a stronger presence in the worldwide market for battery-powered vehicles, which is likely to grow in the coming years.

The third- and second-largest manufacturers in Japan were seeking to collaborate on developing the vehicle’s operating system in an effort to bring down costs, Nikkei said, without citing its source.

According to the Nikkei, Nissan and Honda may collaborate to improve charging infrastructure in order to raise their competitiveness in EVs, and they are believed to be exploring cooperating in six areas as part of their potential partnership.

They are open to working together in any location, both in Japan and abroad, Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida stated in March.

Nissan refused to speak on the Nikkei report but stated that the companies were exploring different partnerships and would release details at the proper time. A Honda representative did not react to a request for comment.

Honda U-GO in collaboration with Chinese counterpart Wuyang-Honda has launched its electric scooter available for the Chinese market only. This vehicle is specially designed for the urban slot and is therefore backed with high speed and power.

This standard model of Honda U-GO will include a 1.2 kW rated hub motor at a continuous rate along with a peak output of 1.8 kW. This e-scooter also offers a high-class body layout with a top speed of 53 kmph. When we compare the lower speed model, it equally etches the brilliance with an 800 W continuous hub motor with a peak power of 1.2 kW. Its maximum speed is 43 kmph. Both these magnificent models offer a 48V and 30Ah removable lithium-ion battery with a potential range of 1.44 kWh. This power station also offers an array of 65 km which can be further enhanced by 130 km through adding a second battery.

Additionally, this model also confers features like an LCD screen that enables a clear view of speed, distance, charge and riding mode of the scooter. The scooter also includes an LED headlight with triple beams on the rear apron with an LED DRL strip to safeguard the entire setup. The model also displays 2-inch front and 10-inch rear alloy wheels with 26-litre under-seat storage.

The range of e-scooters presented by Honda starts from 7,499 RMB ($1,150) which is approximately ₹85,000 (as per INR). As per the reports, the e-scooters by Honda will soon reach the Chinese markets and will gradually take turns towards the other western markets for trade.

The Honda U-GO is expected to be launched with its assemblage of electric scooters and motorcycles with the endorsement of government incentives. However, the official stance from Honda is yet to be announced.

The bookings for the new variant of Honda cars compact sedan Amaze has opened up. On August 18, the new Honda Amaze would be launched in India.

The bookings for the Honda Amaze has been started by the company, at all the authorised dealerships across India. Registration had been also made available and open at Honda for Home online platform at the Honda Cars India website, for the comfort of the buyers who would want to book the car from their homes.

At an authorised Honda dealership, the Honda Amaze could be booked for a token amount of Rs 21,000. The online booking could be done via Honda from Home that would let the users register their unit for Rs 5,000.

Rajesh Goel, the HCIL Senior Vice President and Director, had said in a statement that ever since Honda Amaze’s debut in 2013, the model had won the hearts of more than 4.5 lakh Indians, which has made it one of the most preferred family sedans and they were excited to add another chapter to the success story of the model with the launch of their new model of Amaze in this month.

Mr Goel mentioned the new Amazon and said that it had become more premium, stylish and sophisticated in the new avatar. He also said that they were approaching the upcoming festive season with a new lineup and were hoping to create excitement in the market.

The Amaze is currently in its second generation, is also the largest selling model of Honda, and it enjoys a diverse customer base in India. The Honda Amaze model was conceptualised according to the evolving needs and aspirations of the Indian customers, and it was kept in mind as a factor.

The current model of Honda Amaze had been powered by a 1.5 L i-DTEC diesel engine and a 1.2 L i-VTEC petrol engine which had been made available in both options, manual and CVT versions.

Honda Motor Co to appoint R&D chief Toshiba Mibe as new CEO

Honda Motor’s Chief Executive Officer Takahiro Hachigo would step down and Toshihiro Mibe of the automaker’s research and development arm will be appointed as the new CEO on April 1.

Hachigo will hold his position as company’s board member, Japan’s second-biggest automaker by sales said in a statement.

Mibe, 59, joined Honda in 1987, with stints in engine development and the drivetrain business. He became the president of Honda’s R&D unit in 2019, working with Hachigo to push through structural reforms.

Mibe’s appointment, comes as Honda races to catch up in the field of all-electric cars and faces competition from new entrants and tech giants such as Tesla, Apple and Amazon.

Honda is known for its fuel-efficient internal-combustion engines, Honda launched its first mass-produced all-battery vehicle last August. It has said it wants new-energy vehicles such as plug-in hybrids and fuel-cell cars to make up two-thirds of its sales by 2030.

The two executives will hold a news conference at 5 p.m. (0800 GMT).

During his six years as CEO, Hachigo sought to simplify the vehicle development process by combining some operations for cars and motorcycles. He also slashed costs by streamlining Honda’s model line-up and consolidating factories at home and overseas.

Hachigo also expanded a partnership with General Motors Co to include cooperation in developing electric and autonomous vehicles.

Honda last year said it would stop participating as an engine supplier in the FIA Formula One World Championship at the end of the 2021 season, to focus on zero emission technology.

Honda Motorcycles offers voluntary retirement to employees as to ‘maintain its existence’

Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India (HMSI), the country’s second-largest manufacturer of two-wheelers with over 7000 employees across its four plants in India rolled out a letter on January 5 offering voluntary retirement to its employees in order to “maintain its existence” in a highly competitive market.

“The Indian auto industry is going through an exceptionally challenging phase considering the prolonged demand slowdown and economic fallout from the coronavirus crisis,” HMSI said in the letter, which was reviewed by Reuters.

The scheme can either be availed by the employees who have completed 10 years of service or are over 40 years of age as of January 31, 2021. A senior manager or a vice president would receive over 7 million rupees, depending upon employees years of service. The company also added that it is offering an additional amount of Rs 5,00,000 to the first 400 people who will opt for retirement.

The sales of HMSI plunged 32% to 2.4 million units with overall sales of two-wheelers falling 25% during the first 8 months of the current fiscal year. The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened the situation for automobile companies in India which had already been hit by slowing demand since 2019.

Honda to be the first to mass produce level 3 autonomous cars

Japan-based Honda Motor Co Ltd. on November 11 said it will be the world’s first automaker to mass-produce level 3 autonomous cars. The step will allow drivers to let their vehicles navigate congested expressway traffic. The company has received approval from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT). The company will be able to produce level 3^*1 automated cars.

The company shared information about its automated vehicle saying “Honka is planning to launch sales of a Honda Legend equipped with the newly approved automated driving equipment (“Traffic Jam Pilot”) before the end of the current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2021).” This comes after Japan’s government earlier in the day awarded a safety certification to Honda’s autonomous “Traffic Jam Pilot” driving technology.

The company’s press release also mentions the amendment of the Road vehicle act by the government. “To promote the commercialization of Level 3 automated vehicles, the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) partially amended the Road Vehicle Act, and the revised act (Act No. 14 of 2019) took effect on April 1, 2020. By this amendment, equipment for Level 3 automated driving was newly added to the list of motor vehicle equipment subject to the safety standards (defined in the Ministry of Transport Ordinance No.67, 1951).”
