Cold water, ORS and shaded seating: Delhi govt launches Cooling Zone for commuters

As temperatures continue to soar across the national capital, the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi has intensified its heatwave response measures by setting up dedicated Cooling Zones and mobile relief units across the city. One such Cooling Zone has been established near Jama Masjid Metro Station to provide immediate respite to commuters, visitors and local residents facing extreme summer conditions.

According to recent reports, the Cooling Zone has been equipped with nearly 70 to 80 seats along with facilities such as chilled drinking water, water coolers and ORS-infused water to help prevent dehydration and heat-related illnesses. The initiative comes as Delhi experiences severe heatwave conditions, with authorities focusing on vulnerable populations and high-footfall public areas.

The Delhi government recently launched its Heat Action Plan 2026 and flagged off 13 mobile heat relief units across the city’s districts. These units are supplying cold drinking water, ORS packets, first-aid assistance, cotton towels and caps to people exposed to prolonged heat, especially labourers, commuters and street vendors. Officials said the relief units are operational daily between 11 am and 6 pm in markets, bus stands, metro areas and other crowded public locations.

The broader Heatwave Action Plan also includes the installation of thousands of cooling points, water ATMs and additional water coolers across Delhi to reduce the impact of rising temperatures. Authorities have urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours and use public cooling facilities whenever required.
