Telangana CEO submits list of elected MLAs to Governor

Hyderabad, Dec 4 : Telangana Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Vikas Raj along with Avinash Kumar, Principal Secretary, Election Commission of India, called on Governor Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan on Monday and submitted the notification containing the names of elected members to the Legislative Assembly.

A Raj Bhavan Communique here said, Vikas Raj, Chief Electoral Officer & Ex-Officio Principal Secretary to Government, Telangana and Avinash Kumar, Principal Secretary, Election Commission of India have called on Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, and submitted notification containing names of elected members to the Legislative Assembly in pursuance of Section 73 of the Representation of People Act, 1951 at Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad.

Global Finance magazine 2023 report ranks RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das ‘A+’

The Central Banker Report Cards published by Global Finance magazine recently released their 2023 report. The magazine publishes the report annually and has been doing it since 1994. The report grades the central bank governors of 101 countries, including the European Union countries. The recent report of 2023 has been in the news because the report ranked the RBI’s Governor Shaktikanta Das A+, implicating the top central banker. It implies that the governor has successfully controlled inflation, achieved growth targets, and efficiently managed the interest rate. Other governors who have received grade ‘A’ are Central governors of Brazil, New Zealand, Mauritius and Israel. Governors who have received a grade ‘A-’ are the Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Icelands, etc.

Though the grading list goes to ‘F’, where F shows outright failure, the report celebrates the initiative, creativity and efforts of the Central governors in predicting the best possible strategies to achieve the inflation and growth target. The central banks regulate the interest rate to control inflation by ensuring the system has sufficient liquidity. When the system has more than the required amount of liquidity, the central banks raise the interest rate, making it expensive for the borrowers to take credit from banks. Similarly, credit becomes cheap when the central banks decrease the rate, motivating the public to spend more. Ensuring the rate that promotes growth and prevents elevated inflation is the most challenging task of the central bank.

K’taka Guv gives assent to ordinance hiking SC/ST reservation

Karnataka Governor Thawarchand Gehlot gave his assent to BJP government’s ordinance to increase the reservation quota of SCs and STs in jobs and the education sector in the state.

This paved the way to increase the reservation of SCs from 15 per cent to 17 per cent, and STs from 3 per cent to 7 per cent.

“The number of castes increased drastically after the inclusion of some more communities, and the total population of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the State went up by leaps and bounds,” the gazette notification issued by the government on Sunday said.

The notification further stated that the increase in the reservation was based on a detailed study and analysis.

The ordinance comes ahead of 2023 assembly elections in the state.

Sri Lanka Central Bank Governor quits amid National Emergency

Colombo, April 4: The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Ajith Nivard Cabraal, on Monday resigned amid an unprecedented economic crisis in the island nation. He submitted his resignation to beleaguered President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. “In the context of all Cabinet Ministers resigning, I have today submitted my resignation as Governor … to President,” Cabraal tweeted. Earlier, the Cabinet Ministers, except Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and President Rajapaksa, resigned. Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said the Cabinet Ministers had submitted their resignation to the Prime Minister. Hoping it would help the President and the Prime Minister “to establish stability for the people and the government”. Sri Lanka has been grappling with its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948.

The crisis has been partially caused by a fall in the country’s foreign currency reserves. Which pays for fuel imports, causing prolonged power cuts across the country. And shortages of essential items like food as well as medicines.

Bhupendra Patel to take oath as the 17th Chief Minister of Gujarat, today

On Monday, Bhupendra Patel a first-time MLA from the Ghatlodia constituency in Gujarat will take oath as the 17th chief minister of Gujarat, replacing Vijay Rupani, who surprisingly resigned from the top post in the state, ahead of the assembly elections in 2022.

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s choice of the 59-year-old as the chief minister at a legislative party meeting on Sunday came as a surprise for many as the low-profile, first-time legislator was not seen to be among the top contenders for the post. The BJP has said the selection regarding the new Gujarat cabinet will be taken later.

On Monday, at 2:20 pm, Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat invited Bhupendra Patel to take oath as the new Gujarat chief minister of Gujarat. The Governor wrote in a tweet, “The newly appointed leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Legislature Party, Bhupendrabhai Patel, presented a proposal to form a new government under his leadership at the Raj Bhavan. Accepting the proposal, he was invited to take oath as the Chief Minister on September 13, 2021, at 2:20 pm.”

According to news agency ANI, on Sunday Union home minister Amit Shah is set up to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar as Gujarat CM.“I believe that under the guidance of Narendra Modi, the state’s sustainable development will keep up its momentum,” Amit Shah said on Sunday.

Bhupendra Patel is an MLA from the Ghatlodia seat. Patel is known to be close to Amit Shah as well as Anandiben Patel. Patel has won his seat by over 117,000 votes in 2017, the largest margin in that poll defeating Congress candidate Shashikant Patel. Bhupendra Patel holds a diploma in civil engineering, and also served as the chairperson of the Standing Committee of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (AUDA).

New York Governor resigned on allegations of sexual harassment

On August 10, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo reportedly resigned from his post due to an inquiry on him for sexually harassing 11 women with added legal pressure and high demand for his departure by President Joe Biden and others officials.

The investigation was followed with a detailed 168-page report, which mentioned some intricate details that brought a significant lead to the case. Cuomo groped, kissed and made derogatory remarks to women including current and former government workers, a state trooper and retaliated against a woman who reportedly accused him of sexual molestation.

Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, a Democrat from the western New York counterpart, will succeed as the governor of the state until Cuomo’s term in December 2022 ends, on the verge to become the first woman to hold this major post.

The civil investigation discovered Cuomo’s details that he has purposely violated multiple state and federal laws. Local prosecutors in Manhattan, Nassau County, Albany County, and Westchester County averred that after the report is revealed they will look into the matter by appealing independent inquiry.

Cuomo for several months denied the peaking allegations of sexual harassment against him and have renewed those denials after the investigative report was filed. A few hours later, Biden administration told reporters at the White House: “I think he should resign”.

“That is just not who I am,” Cuomo asserted in the video that “what women described as sexual advances were inoffensive gestures and comments inspired by a natural physical warmth arising from the culture in which he was raised.” In the video, he mentioned having no plans to resign, supporting the fight against the pandemic.

RBI keeps Repo rate unchanged at 4 per cent

The repo rate had been kept unchanged at 4 per cent by the Reserve Bank, Governor Shaktikanta Das has said that the policy stance has continued to be accommodative, the announcement was made by the RBI Governor at a press briefing on the end of the bi-monthly Monetary Policy Committee review meeting that had started on Wednesday. Apart from the repo rate, the reverse repo rate had also been left unchanged at 3.35 per cent.

The RBI has now maintained in six consecutive monetary policy meetings, the key benchmark rates unchanged. On May 22, 2020, the central bank had last cut their policy rates when the pandemic affected the whole country.
The key lending rates had been reduced by the Reserve Bank. The state in which the policy rate came was due to the slowdown in manufacturing and service sectors which were a large contributor to India’s gross domestic product.
In July, the India Services Business Activity Index, had posted 45.4, as the third successive month in contraction territory and industrial production was expanding at a slower pace, in May 2020, the growth was 29.3 per cent which is compared to the 135 per cent in April.

In the previous week, IMF had lowered the growth projections from 12.5 per cent to 9.5 per cent for the fiscal year 2021-22 which was down by 3 per cent points which were continued by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

IMF has revised the economic growth for the next fiscal year of 2022-23 for India, which would be from 6.9 per cent to 8.5 per cent.

Mr. Malik is also the Former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir who witnessed the transition of the state of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory. He also added that not a single bullet had been fired in J&K ever since the revocation of Article 370 in August this year.
