Kerala Gold Smuggling accused Sandeep Nair agrees to give a Confession Statement

In a turning point into the development of the Kerala gold smuggling scandal, one of the key accused Sandeep Nair has filed an application in Kochi NIA court stating that he is ready to give a confession statement under CrPC 164 & turn approver in the case. NIA will record his confession statement before the CJM Court. The NIA court in Kochi has granted permission to record his confession statement on his request.

Following the petition, NIA Court Judge P Krishna Kumar has examined him via a video conferencing. Sandeep has been told that by admitting the crime, there is no guarantee of getting a pardon in the case or that he will be made an approver.

On September 22, the prime accused had agreed to provide a confession statement admitting to the crime in Court. He was granted bail on the same day by Kochi Court but was not allowed to leave the Viyyur Central Jail, in Thrissur district as he was accused in other cases filed by NIA.

The Kerala gold smuggling scam came to light after the Customs department seized 30 kg gold from an air cargo consignment from the UAE to the country’s consulate in Thiruvananthapuram on July 5 and he was arrested along with Swapna Suresh by the NIA from Bengaluru on July 11. NIA had searched his house in Thiruvananthapuram and found some incriminating material. He was also accused in the case registered by Customs and Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Suspended Senior IAS officer M Sivasankar appears before National Investigation Agency probing gold smuggling case in Kerala. Sivasankar was suspended after allegations surfaced that he had links with, the key accused Swapna Suresh in the case related to the attempt to smuggle gold through diplomatic baggage using the name of a person in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) consulate in Thiruvananthapuram.

Several rounds of investigation and interrogation have taken place in past few weeks, in the Sensational case of gold smuggling. He is alleged to have links with the key accused woman Swapna Suresh. Earlier he was questioned by the customs department after they seized the gold, weighing over 30 kg and valued at around Rs 15 crore on July 5.

Gold smuggling case: Opposition Leader Chennithala says NIA probe of Kerala’s Education Minster Jameel is serious

Leader of the Opposition parties and Congress, R Chennithala, in the Kerala gold smuggling case, said, “The NIA probe on the KT Jameel is serious. The NIA only probes terror crimes. The Kerala Education Minter’s involved in this gold smuggling case and the public is disgusted.”

Security escorted KT Jameel, Kerala’s Education Minister, to be questioned by the NIA (National Investigation Agency) office at 6 am to evade the media and public. High security was set up near the NIA due to the protests from the opposition parties demanding Jameel’s resignation.

Swapna Suresh, a gold smuggler in the gold smuggling case, accused the minister and said he was interrogated previously by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) with regards to the allegations of his links with the case.

Jameel claimed he received a foreign package containing 300 Qurans from the UAE consulate to be distributed across the state. There are also allegations that these texts were received by violating the protocol and Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.

Chennithala further said that the UDF plans for “more vigorous agitation.”

Kerala Congress members demanding Minister KT Jaleel’s resignation detained outside NIA office

Kerala Congress workers protesting outside the office of National Investigation Agency(NIA) in Kochi, demanding State Higher Education Minister KT Jaleel’s resignation have been detained by police on Thursday. Jaleel reached the Kochi office of the NIA for questioning over his connection with UAE consulate and gold smuggling case accused Swapna Suresh.

He was also interrogated by the Enforcement Directorate earlier for the same. After Suresh’s arrest in July he denied having any links with the accused and claimed that, he had contacted her based on the direction of the Consul General of the UAE consulate in Thiruvananthapuram. He is also being probed for the violation of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010, as he allegedly accepted foreign aid without consulting the Centre.

Ever since the the gold smuggling case became a controversy involving the ruling CPI(M) government the opposition has been protesting and demanding the resgination of the ministers involved.

Kerala High Court grants bail to accused of Kerala gold smuggling case Md Anwar, Md Abdul Shameem and Jipsal

Kerala: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested four more accused on August 24 in the Kerala gold smuggling case.

A statement from the NIA said, “In a continued investigation in Kerala Gold Smuggling case, NIA arrested four more accused persons on 24.8.2020 viz. Jifsal C. V. resident of Kozhikode district, Aboobacker President of Malappuram district, Muhammed Abdu Shameem, resident of Kozhikode district and Abdul Hameed P.M, resident of Malappuram district, Kerala.

Customs Department registered a gold smuggling case against Md Anwar, Md Abdul Shameem, and Jipsal as accused of gold smuggling case.

Today, Kerala High Court grants bail to Md Anwar, Md Abdul Shameem, and Jipsal, in the case registered by the Customs Department.
