Pentagon Unveils Deals for Over 10,000 Containerized Missiles Starting 2027

The United States Department of Defense has announced a series of new agreements with defence and technology companies aimed at significantly boosting American military strike capabilities amid growing geopolitical tensions and increasing global security challenges.

According to an official Pentagon statement, the agreements include framework deals with Anduril Industries, Leidos, CoAspire and Zone 5 Technologies under a newly launched “Low-Cost Containerized Munitions” (LCCM) programme. The initiative is designed to enable the future procurement of more than 10,000 low-cost containerised missiles over a three-year period beginning in 2027.

The Pentagon said the programme will enter its assessment phase in June 2026, during which test missiles will be acquired from all four participating companies. Officials stated that the agreements establish the framework for future firm-fixed-price production contracts intended to accelerate weapons manufacturing and improve deployment flexibility for U.S. forces.

The U.S. Army has for years promoted containerised missile systems as a cost-effective and mobile solution that allows precision weapons to be deployed from standard commercial shipping containers, enhancing operational mobility and reducing deployment costs.

In a separate agreement, the Pentagon also partnered with Castelion to support the future acquisition of its “Blackbeard” hypersonic missile system. According to the statement, the Pentagon plans to award a two-year contract involving a minimum annual purchase of 500 Blackbeard missiles once the weapon successfully completes testing and validation requirements. Officials added that the Department of Defense is seeking congressional authorisations and appropriations for the procurement of more than 12,000 Blackbeard missiles over five years.

Michael Duffey, the Pentagon’s under secretary of defense for acquisition and sustainment, said the agreements demonstrate how the U.S. military is moving beyond traditional prime contractors in an effort to expand America’s defence industrial base and encourage emerging defence technology firms.

“The agreements send a clear, long-term demand signal to innovative new entrants,” Duffey said in the statement.

Emil Michael, under secretary of defense for research and engineering, stated that the agreements commit participating firms to timely and cost-efficient delivery schedules.

“We will deliver affordable mass for our warfighters at unprecedented speed,” Michael said.

The latest announcements come as the United States accelerates efforts to replenish and expand its weapons stockpiles amid heightened military tensions involving Iran and broader instability in the Middle East. Pentagon officials have repeatedly stressed the need to strengthen America’s defence manufacturing capabilities and increase rapid production capacity for critical munitions.

General Dan Caine stated in written testimony this week that the Pentagon’s fiscal year 2027 budget request includes more than $26 billion for multi-year procurement contracts covering critical munitions and advanced weapons systems.

Recent U.S. defence strategies have increasingly focused on low-cost precision strike systems, hypersonic weapons and artificial intelligence-driven military technologies. Earlier this month, the Pentagon also expanded partnerships with major technology firms, including OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Amazon Web Services, to integrate advanced AI systems into classified military and operational networks.

U.S. defence officials say the latest agreements are intended to improve operational readiness, expand missile production and ensure rapid-response capabilities in future conflicts. The developments are being closely watched internationally as global military competition intensifies and major powers continue expanding investments in advanced strike systems, missile technology and AI-enabled warfare capabilities.
