Beijing, April 25: Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Foxconn, Apple’s main supplier of electronic components, has suspended operations of two factories in the eastern city of Kunshan due to Covid-19 restrictions, Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post reported on Monday. Foxconn Technology Group, Apple Inc.’s largest iPhone assembler, stated it has resumed some manufacturing at its factories in Shenzhen after a COVID-19 outbreak and a city lockdown this week forced the company and other manufacturers to halt operations there.

Foxconn stated on Wednesday that it was able to resume manufacturing by adhering to local regulations that allow businesses to operate if they create a bubble-like environment and keep employees inside. According to the Shenzhen government, under such pandemic-control policies, employees must work, travel, and live on the factory campus and are not permitted to leave.

After an increase in COVID-19 cases, Shenzhen was placed under a one-week lockdown on Monday, the first time China has imposed such restrictions in a city of its size and importance to the economy. Restaurants and public transportation have been closed, and residents have been advised not to leave their homes or the city for non-essential reasons, as authorities race to track down infections and suppositories.

According to Foxconn, the closed-loop system “can only be done on campuses that include both employee housing and production facilities, and adheres to strict industry guidelines and close-loop management policies issued by the Shenzhen government.” “In addition, the company is closely monitoring and implementing the government’s pandemic preparedness measures.”

Shenzhen announced earlier this week that it would allow factory bubbles, in which workers travel only from company housing to plants and are tested on a regular basis, as a means of mitigating the economic impact of the lockdown. Foxconn the largest manufacturer of Apple Inc, will be suspending production of iPhones temporarily at its Shenzhen facility. This decision has been taken in lieu of growing COVID-19 cases in the technology hub city.

This Taiwanese manufacturer is also called Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, its Chinese headquarters is in Shenzhen and an important manufacturing unit is in Guanlan. Foxconn will be, for a while suspending its production at this particular site and will distribute the volume to other sites to reduce the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on production.

It is still not clear how long the facility will be shut. The Chinese government has announced non-essential companies and businesses to shut shop in Shenzhen till March 20^th.

This decision will be hard-hitting for Foxconn as it makes several models for Apple Inc., as usually the sales increase typically in the first quarter of any fiscal year, which is the quarter right after holiday season peak time.

Foxconn’s shares fell as much as 1% in Taipei on Monday morning. Foxconn is Apple Inc.’s smartphone manufacturer and this activity is carried out at a facility in the central city of Zhengzhou and so is called the iPhone City. When compared to the Zhengzhou site the Guanlan site is at a smaller scale.

Foxconn was one of the 1^st companies to take the coronavirus blow in 2020, and as a precaution, it requested its employees to stay away from the headquarters at Shenzhen. The Chinese government has declared a lockdown which affects close to 17.5 million people of Shenzhen for a week on Sunday. This is a temporary measure to stop the COVID-19 spread.
