Vedanta’s London based parent company, Vedanta Resources has been under a constant debt rise.

Foxconn and the Indian Government had concern over the financials of Vedanta, which is said to be a potential reason why the Taiwanese company parted ways with Vedanta on the joint venture of chip making as per report by Reuters.

Vedanta’s London based parent company, Vedanta Resources has been under a constant debt rise.

In its statement to Reuters, Vedanta said that it is in a “comfortable” financial position and there was “no basis” on such speculations.

The Indian Information Technology ministry did not comment over the split. Various rating agencies downgraded Vedanta Resources on the ground that the firm is in the risk of debt defaults.

Debarring the reports, Vedanta Chairperson Anil Agarwal said, “There have been no defaults on debts from the group.”

Meanwhile, Foxconn on Tuesday said it plans to apply for incentives that India is offering under its semiconductor manufacturing policy. This comes a day after the company parted ways with Vedanta on a $19.5 billion chip making joint venture.

“Foxconn is committed to India and sees the country successfully establishing a robust semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem,” the company said.

“Foxconn is working toward submitting an application.” It added.

Yesterday, Foxconn withdrew from its semiconductor joint venture with Indian conglomerate Vedanta Group, which is a major setback to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plans to manufacture semiconductor chips in the country.

“There was recognition from both sides that the project was not moving fast enough” and there were other “challenging gaps we were not able to smoothly overcome, without sharing details.” Foxconn said on Tuesday.

“This is not a negative”, company added in the statement.

Only a few weeks have passed since the new Congress-led administration in Karnataka entered office before the announcement.

According to the Minister for Large and Medium Industries, MB Patil, Taiwanese electronics company Foxconn, a significant Apple supplier, would begin producing iPhones in Bengaluru by April 2024. The state government would hand over the necessary land for the firm by July 1 to assist this, the minister said, according to India Today. The company wants to begin producing iPhones at its projected Devanahalli facility.

“The identified 300 acres of land at ITIR of Devanahalli would be handed over by July 1,” Patil said, adding that in addition, the government would guarantee providing 5 MLD of water, high-quality power, road connection, and other infrastructure amenities.

The declaration was made only a few weeks after the Congress-led new administration in Karnataka assumed power. An estimated 50,000 employment would be generated by the Rs 13,600 crore project. Foxconn has reportedly been requested to submit specifics on the skill sets it needs in potential recruits, according to the ministry. He said that as a result, steps will be taken to make training courses available to qualified people in order to help them become employable.

Foxconn has already paid the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board Rs 90 crore, or 30% of the cost of the land. The world’s largest electronics company has set the objective to finish the project in three phases and has set a target of 20 million (2 crore) units of production per year from the facility after the completion of three phases.

Following their meeting as part of the courtesy visit, the company’s representatives lead by George Chu informed the minister of their decision. Priyanka Kharge, Karnataka’s minister of information and technology, was also there.

Foxconn said this month that it has purchased a sizable plot of property in Bengaluru, a major centre for technology. The business is the largest producer of contract electronics in the world and a key supplier of Apple iPhone assembly. The business said in a statement to the London Stock Exchange that it had bought 1.2 million square metres (13 million square feet) of property in Devanahalli, close to the airport serving Bengaluru.

A new facility where Apple will “soon” produce iPhones would “about 100,000 jobs,” according to the former chief minister of Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai, who made the announcement in March.

According to Reuters, Apple has been moving manufacturing away from China as a result of the nation’s stringent COVID-related limitations that have hampered the country’s ability to produce new iPhones and other electronic gadgets. In addition, the IT giant wants to prevent a blow to its company from escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington.

In India, Apple debuted its first retail locations in April of this year. Two outlets were opened by the iPhone manufacturer—one each in Delhi and Mumbai.

As the country’s smartphone exports rose to more than $11 billion, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently stated that India was on its path to become a worldwide leader in the mobile devices category. Nearly $11.12 billion worth of mobile phones were exported from India, with Apple, the manufacturer of the iPhone, being responsible for around half of the shipments.

“With smartphone exports more than tripling to more than $11 billion, India is well on its way to overtaking the United States as the global leader in the market for mobile devices and contributing significantly to the country’s electronic exports. Vaishnaw was reported by the news agency PTI as stating, “This is a significant victory for PM Modiji’s ‘Make in India’ campaign.

The land plot is outside the city limits at Devanahalli, close to the airport in Bengaluru.

According to documents submitted to the London Stock Exchange (LSE), Hon Hai Precision Industry paid roughly Rs 300 crore ($37 million) for a 300-acre plot of land in Karnataka’s rural Bangalore district. According to APF’s May 9 report, the acquisition was made on behalf of its subsidiary Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development.

The plot of property is located on the outskirts of Bangalore at Devanahalli, close to the airport in Bengaluru. The move is part of an effort by the Taiwanese electronics maker to diversify away from China in terms of production. The primary source of Apple iPhone components is Foxconn.

Notably, on March 20, the Karnataka government also announced that Foxconn would spend Rs 8,000 crore in a mobile manufacturing facility that would provide jobs for 50,000 people in the state. This occurred after CM Basavaraj Bommai and Foxconn CEO and Chairman Young Liu met while Young Liu was in the state.

In a previous tweet, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Union minister of state for entrepreneurship, electronics, and technology, mentioned that a new 300-acre facility in Karnataka would be producing Apple phones. On March 3, a 300-acre plot of land in the Devanahalli Taluk’s Doddaballapur Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR) industrial sector close to the Bengaluru International Airport was located.

In the state, the electronics manufacturing facility is expected to create more than 1 lakh new jobs over the next ten years.

Foxconn will have a “ground-breaking” ceremony in Telangana on May 15, according to Jayesh Ranjan, the state’s principal secretary of IT and industries. According to reports, the widely advertised investment will be the company’s largest single expenditure in India and is predicted to generate 1 lakh employment. Questions on the amount of the investment, the products Foxconn will produce, and other specifics were not answered by Ranjan.

After the governments of Telangana and Karnataka declared Foxconn’s “interest” in making investments in their states, there was a lot of talk.

On March 2, the day after the iPhone manufacturer signed an MoU with Telangana, the Karnataka government announced that Foxconn will invest in the state and that it had found a 300-acre site for the company’s operations.

However, Foxconn later claimed that during its chairman Young Liu’s recent trip to India, “no binding, definitive agreements” had been made.

The Chinese government has announced non-essential companies and businesses to shut shop in Shenzhen till March 20th.

Foxconn the largest manufacturer of Apple Inc, will be suspending production of iPhones temporarily at its Shenzhen facility. This decision has been taken in lieu of growing COVID-19 cases in the technology hub city.

This Taiwanese manufacturer is also called Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, its Chinese headquarters is in Shenzhen and an important manufacturing unit is in Guanlan. Foxconn will be, for a while suspending its production at this particular site and will distribute the volume to other sites to reduce the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on production.

It is still not clear how long the facility will be shut. The Chinese government has announced non-essential companies and businesses to shut shop in Shenzhen till March 20th.

This decision will be hard-hitting for Foxconn as it makes several models for Apple Inc., as usually the sales increase typically in the first quarter of any fiscal year, which is the quarter right after holiday season peak time.

Foxconn’s shares fell as much as 1% in Taipei on Monday morning. Foxconn is Apple Inc.’s smartphone manufacturer and this activity is carried out at a facility in the central city of Zhengzhou and so is called the iPhone City. When compared to the Zhengzhou site the Guanlan site is at a smaller scale.

Foxconn was one of the 1st companies to take the coronavirus blow in 2020, and as a precaution, it requested its employees to stay away from the headquarters at Shenzhen. The Chinese government has declared a lockdown which affects close to 17.5 million people of Shenzhen for a week on Sunday. This is a temporary measure to stop the COVID-19 spread.
