DRDO build Seven-storey building in record 45 days for HAL R&D facility for AMCA in Bengaluru

Today, Defense minister GOI, Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the seven-story tall R&D center that was built by DRDO in 45 days to facilitate the HAL AMCA initiative, showing the government of India’s determination to build an arsenal for facilitating its air superiority.

Earlier, the Director-General of Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), Girish S. Deodhare had revealed that Preliminary service quality requirements were completed. The Critical Design Review (CDR) will be completed this year.

AMCA is envisioned to be a stealth aircraft loaded with twin engines, an internal weapons bay, and a driverless supersonic Intake, which was done for the first time and due to which the design is now complete.

The Indian Air Force is said to be committed to 40 AMCA Mk1 fighters and a minimum of 100 Mk2 derivatives also, they’ve also said to include some unmanned variants as well. The AMCA stealth fighter is said to have supercruise capabilities.

Indian Air force has about 30-32 fighter squadrons in their arsenal as of now, the AMCA program is essential to increase its air superiority and maneuverability over the vast geographical area that it is tasked to patrol.

With AMCA in full swing, India will be another county to join the club of Air Superiority with only 3 countries that have indigenously built their stealth fighters, also there are several high-profile developments that are taking place in Russia, China, Turkey, South Korea, Japan, and Europe.

DRDO develops new tech to protect India’s fighter jets against radar threats

On Wednesday, The DRDO said its latest advanced chaff technology to safeguard IAF’s fighter jets provides passive jamming against infra-red and radar threats.

In collaboration with the Pune-based facility of the DRDO, the Defence Laboratory in Jodhpur has developed the advanced chaff material and chaff cartridge.

At a press conference on Wednesday, the Director of Defence Lab in Jodhpur Ravindra Kumar said chaff is a critical defence technology used to protect fighter aircraft from hostile radar threats. “In today’s electronic warfare, survivability of fighter aircraft is of prime concern because of advancement in modern radar threats. To ensure the survivability of aircraft, CounterMeasure Dispensing System (CMDS) is used which provides passive jamming against Infra-Red and radar threats, Kumar said.

He said the importance of this technology lies in the fact that a very little quantity of chaff material deployed in the air acts as a decoy to deflect enemy’s missiles for ensuring the safety of the fighter aircraft. Kumar said the technology has been given to the industry for production in large quantities to meet the annual rolling requirement of the Indian Air Force.

Earlier, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had lauded the DRDO, IAF and the industry for indigenous development of this critical technology, terming it as one more step of DRDO towards ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ in strategic defence technologies. Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO Dr G Satheesh Reddy had also congratulated the teams associated with the successful development of this advanced technology aimed at strengthening the Indian Air Force.

Taiwan signs agreement to buy 66 F-16 fighter jets from US; China warns against it

A move that might further escalate the tensions between US & China, Taiwan has formally signed an agreement to buy 66 of the latest model F-16 jets built by Lockheed Martin Corp. In 28 years, this is the first time Taiwan is purchasing the advanced fighter jets, since 1992 when President George H.W Bush announced the approval of 15 F-16s to the island nation.

A $62 billion figure announced by the Pentagon on Friday, 14 August, is the upper limit of numerous contracts if all potential foreign customers placed their maximum desired number over the decade. It said that work on the 90 jets potentially to be sold under Friday’s announcement would be complete by late 2026. Company officials have previously said they project a market for as many as 400 of the new F-16s.

Along with Taiwan, Morocco is also buying 24 F-16s jets in the first tranche of 90 aircraft valued at $4.9 billion. While the announcement by Pentagon didn’t explicitly name Taiwan or Morocco, both countries were identified previously in a statement and were confirmed by a person familiar with the contract.

The Taiwan F-16s will be equipped with a top-line fire control radar made by Northrop Grumman Corp. Named APG-83, it would allow precision-guided munitions to be fired at greater distances, said an official familiar with the details.

Lockheed Chief Financial Officer Kenneth Possenriede told analysts on a July 21 earnings call that the company was anticipating a “quite large” F-16 order “that should get announced sometime this quarter” in which “the marquee customer is Taiwan.”

While the US has backed this sale to Taiwan, it’s drawn a heavy warning from China. It’s most likely to be denounced by China, even though the US had signaled its plans to approve the sale a year ago.

When the planned sale was announced in August last year, a spokeswoman for China’s Foreign Ministry told reporters that “U.S. arms sales to Taiwan severely violate the one-China principle.”

The spokeswoman, Hua Chunying, said at the time that her government was urging the U.S. to “refrain” from selling the “fighter jets to Taiwan and stop arms sales to, and military contact with, Taiwan. Otherwise, the Chinese side will surely make strong reactions, and the U.S. will have to bear all the consequences.”
