In a preemptive move, the Gurugram Police detained 70 farmers and intercepted a procession of around 400 in Manesar on Tuesday.

As tensions escalate between protesting farmers and security forces, Delhi braces for another wave of traffic chaos. The farmers, undeterred by previous clashes, are set to resume their march towards the capital on Wednesday, intensifying the standoff with authorities in Haryana.

To fortify the city’s main border crossing points with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, the Delhi Police have ramped up security measures at Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur. Protruding iron nails, iron barricades, barbed wires, and heavy machinery including dumpers, cranes, and earthmovers have been strategically placed at Singhu, where a contingent of 2,000 security personnel stands guard.

Similarly, over 1,000 personnel have been stationed at Ghazipur, where two layers of jersey barriers have been erected, reinforced with cement to deter any breach attempts. At Tikri, nearly 5,000 police personnel are expected to manage security arrangements.

While traffic remained smooth at the Ghazipur border on Tuesday with only one lane blocked, Singhu and Tikri have witnessed complete vehicular shutdown since February 13, with commuters rerouted through alternative routes.

In a preemptive move, the Gurugram Police detained 70 farmers and intercepted a procession of around 400 in Manesar on Tuesday. Despite the heightened security measures, farmer leader Jagjeet Singh Dallewal reiterated their willingness to engage in dialogue while tensions simmered at the Shambhu border between Punjab and Haryana.

Anticipating potential confrontations, protesters have reinforced their ranks with modified excavators and JCB machines, equipped to withstand police ammunition. Additionally, makeshift shields, gas masks, and sandbags have been prepared to mitigate the impact of tear gas and rubber bullets.

The resolve of the farmers remains steadfast as they press for their demands, including minimum support prices for 23 crops. Despite a temporary halt to their march last week during negotiations with the Union government, the deadlock persists following the fourth round of talks on Sunday night

Farmer leaders maintain their commitment to non-violence while preparing to confront security forces. Ramandeep Singh Mann emphasized their defensive preparations against potential aggression, while Sarwan Singh Pandher appealed to the government for resolution through dialogue or the removal of barricades to facilitate their march towards Delhi.

Rakesh Tikait, leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, a key farm organisation behind the ongoing farmers’ agitation, celebrated his birthday...

Rakesh Tikait, leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, a key farm organisation behind the ongoing farmers’ agitation, celebrated his birthday on Friday with a vow to not rest until the three agricultural laws at the heart of protests were scrapped, but predicted the legislation would be gone by 2024. The laws will be withdrawn by 2024. It’s certain. In three years, the laws will go,” he said. The ruling National Democratic Alliance’s current term ends in 2024 when it will face the next Lok Sabha election.

Asked what made him so confident since the government has said it was willing to suspend the laws for 18 months, not repeal them, Tikait said: “Why will they not withdraw it? What do you mean by ‘no, it looks impossible’?” The farm leader, however, did not clearly state the reasons behind his assertion. Asked if he had any word with the government on rescinding the laws, he said: “No, we have talked to the public. The public will decide and the laws will go. The government will have to withdraw them.”

Tikait said he had talked to Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath recently over the phone. “Yes, I talked to him over the phone. No meeting. In UP, there are arrears of ₹23,000 crore payable to sugarcane farmers. We raised these issues of pending sugarcane dues, and rising diesel and electricity prices that are hurting farmers,” Tikait said. “We will meet the (UP) chief minister when corona subsides,” he said. Thousands of farmers, especially from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, are demanding the rollback of three laws passed in September last year, mounting a political challenge for the Modi government.

Tikait has entrenched the protests firmly in his home turf, the politically crucial sugarcane belt of western Uttar Pradesh. The Tikaits belong to the Baliyan khap, a dominant clan among the Jat agrarian community in western UP, most of who are sugarcane growers. They voted overwhelmingly for the ruling BJP in the past elections. So far, 11 rounds of talks between 40 farm leaders and the government have failed to resolve the agitation. Both the government and farmers had called off the series of discussions on January 22, citing a lack of progress.

Under Tikait, the farmers’ protests have branched off into a regional uprising. He has built a groundswell of support for the agitation by raising local farm issues, such as the problems of sugarcane growers and growing cultivation costs, aside from the demand of scrapping the laws. The government has said the agricultural laws would spur investments and give farmers the freedom to sell their produce directly to large buyers in a sector that accounts for nearly 15% of India’s $2.9 trillion economies and employs half its workforce.

Farmers say the laws will threaten their livelihoods by forcing them to sell to corporate giants at poor prices instead of government-run markets, which offer assured prices. “The farmers’ agitation will not only impact but may well be a deciding factor in the UP’s state elections in 2022. The BJP claimed the agitation was limited to western UP but lost some key seats in Ayodhya, Varanasi and Gorakhpur in the panchayat polls,” said Sudhir Panwar, who teaches at Lucknow University.

On May 21, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, a platform of farm unions leading the protests, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking him to resume dialogue to end the agitation. Reacting to the letter, farm minister Narendra Tomar had said since the farmers had rejected all the government’s proposals, they should come up with a new proposal before talks could be held.

Disha Ravi, the climate activist arrested over a farmers’ protest toolkit linked to Republic Day violence in Delhi – has been sent to judicial custody for three days after she was produced in a court today by Delhi Police. The 22-year-old who was arrested last week is facing charges of conspiracy and sedition.

The Google document, which was tweeted by Swedish climate crusader Greta Thunberg earlier this month to back farmers’ protest and then deleted, was created by Ms Ravi and two other activists Nikita Jacob and Shantanu Muluk, police had alleged this week.

Stressing on the possibility of “evidence tampering”, the cops today sought three more days of judicial custody for Ms Ravi; she was in police custody for five days.

“I did not make the toolkit. We wanted to support the farmers. I edited two lines on February 3,” Disha Ravi had told a court on Sunday.

However, the Delhi Police had justified the action. “Highly incriminating information was recovered from Disha’s phone, which made it clear that she made the document (toolkit) along with Shantanu and Nikita and sent it to others,” senior Delhi Police officer Prem Nath told reporters on Monday.

“The main aim of the toolkit was to spread misinformation against the lawfully elected government. They also sought public participation in the action on January 26, Republic Day of India. We acted against Disha because she deleted a WhatsApp group created to coordinate for the toolkit,” he had said.

High Court has told news channels to “ensure that proper editorial control is exercised while disseminating information to ensure the investigation is not hampered”

On tuesday, the Bombay High Court will hear the bail petitions of advocate and activist Nikita Jacob and Shantanu Muluk, who are facing arrest for their alleged involvement in preparing and a toolkit that details digital support for farmers protesting against Centre agricultural laws.

Activist Disha Ravi, 22, and the two others held a Zoom meeting before Republic Day to plan a social media buzz on the farmers’ tractor rally, the police said on Monday.

In her request for protection from arrest, Nikita Jacob has asked for a copy of the FIR (First Information Report) and has alleged that Delhi Police came to her Mumbai home last Thursday with a search warrant and seized gadgets and documents. Mr Muluk too has approached the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court with a request for protection from arrest. Both of them face charges that are not bailable.

The Delhi Police have alleged that Jacob and Muluk created the Google toolkit in collaboration with another 22-year-old activist Disha Ravi, who was arrested from Bengaluru on Saturday and was sent to five days in police custody by a court in Delhi.

Jacob, in her statement to the police, has accepted calling for support for agitating farmers on social media. However, she denied sharing any information with Thunberg and added that the document was an “informational pack” and was not intended to incite violence. She told the police that the toolkit was being prepared by XR India volunteers for presenting the whole picture with a simple breakdown for an international audience.

Samyukta Kisan Morcha on Wednesday announced a four-hour nationwide ‘rail roko’ (railway blockade) on February 18 from 12 pm to 4 pm, in a step to intensify their agitation against the three new agricultural laws.

In a statement, the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, which is spearheading the protest, also announced that toll collection will not be allowed in Rajasthan from February 12.

“There will be a ‘rail roko’ across the country from 12 pm to 4 pm on February 18,” the SKM said in the statement.

Earlier this month, they had observed a three-hour road blockade to press their demand of repealing the three laws.

Samyukta Kisan Morcha which is leading the the farmers’ protest has also announced that toll collection will not be allowed in Rajasthan from February 12.

Two days later, the farm unions will organise candle marches and other functions to pay tribute to the Pulwama martyrs. On February 16, the farmers will show solidarity throughout the country on the birth anniversary of Sir Chhoturam. At present, the Supreme Court has stayed the implementation of the agrarian laws and formed a committee to resolve the ongoing standoff.

Thousands of farmers have been protesting against the three laws which were enacted in September last year. The protesters have been alleging the laws will weaken the MSP mechanism and end the mandi system.

The social networking service, Twitter on 4th February 2021 was asked to remove 1,178 handles from their platform by the central government, according to news agency ANI. The government asserted that the accounts were reportedly spreading misinformation around farmers’ protests. Apparently, the 1,178 handles are Pakistani and Khalistani users.

Twitter has come ahead and reacted to the requests of the government. The social media platform specified their rules and regulations around removing handles from Twitter. A Twitter spokesperson said, “Twitter is guided by principles of transparency and empowering the public conversation. If we receive a valid legal request about potentially illegal content on Twitter, we review it under the Twitter Rules and local law.”

The statement said, “If the content violates Twitter’s Rules, the content will be removed from the service. If it is determined to be illegal in a particular jurisdiction but not in violation of the Twitter Rules, we may withhold access to the content in the location only. In all cases, we notify the account holder directly so they’re aware we’ve received a legal order pertaining to the account. Our goal is to respect local law while protecting our foundational principles of free expression.”

Twitter has not validated if any of the 1,178 accounts have been withdrawn yet. On 31st January, the IT Ministry had sent a list of 257 handles and tweets to be blocked for comparable reasons. Twitter blocked these accounts for a few hours before independently unblocking them. The platform claim that the extension of the suspension was not warranted.

The Indian government reminded Twitter that there could be legal consequences for not following the directive in the form of a fine or jail. The 257 accounts were spreading misinformation through trends such as #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide.

The social media company responded via an emailed response where a spokesperson said that Twitter is guided by principles of transparency and empowering the public conversation.

“If we receive a valid legal request about potentially illegal content on Twitter, we review it under the Twitter Rules and local law. If the content violates Twitter’s Rules, the content will be removed from the service. If it is determined to be illegal in a particular jurisdiction but not in violation of the Twitter Rules, we may withhold access to the content in the location only. In all cases, we notify the account holder directly so they’re aware we’ve received a legal order pertaining to the account.

Swedish climate and environmental activist Greta Thunberg earlier tweeted about the ongoing farmers’ agitation in India, she wrote, “We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India.” Then she added a farmer toolkit in the tweet thread to push the farmers’ voice, but this toolkit lead to heavy criticism for the young activist.

Because of the so called toolkit, social media users slammed Greta for being a part of ‘international propaganda’ against India. After that, hashtag #GretaThunbergExposed started trending on Twitter.

Keeping in mind the heavy criticism, the little activist deleted that toolkit and updated it with a new one. Greta wrote on her Twitter, “Here’s an updated toolkit by people on the ground in India if you want to help. (They removed their previous document as it was outdated.) #StandWithFarmers #FarmersProtest“.

The 6-page document shared by Greta Thunberg seems to have been in circulation since early January as it includes plans to intensify the protests on January 26, on the occasion of Republic Day, when violence broke out on the streets of the national capital.

One of the line in that toolkit quotes, “India has a long history of human rights violations, violence and a cruel indifference for its most vulnerable citizens. On January 26th the government will be celebrating the adoption of its constitution with a military parade, while continuing to perpetuate harmful policies that violate their own Constitution”.

Recently, not only Indian celebrities but global celebrities too have come forward to show their open support for ongoing farmers agitation in India. Before Amanda, singer Rihanna also asked through her Twitter handle, “why aren’t we talking about this?! #FarmersProtest”.

From over 2 months, farmers are protesting on the outskirts of Delhi, to show their anger against the new Farms Act enacted by central government of India.

Internet has been clamped down in many areas of the protests and over 110 Twitter accounts have been withheld amidst the agitation.

January 26, 2020: Last week, after conducting talks with the Delhi Police the farmers, protesting the controversial farm laws, were given permission to hold a tractor parade on the Outer Ring Road in Delhi.

The newest update on Republic Day is that farmers and farmer’s unions in Karnataka will be taking out another tractor rally in Karnataka to show support for the farmers that have been protesting at Delhi border for weeks now.

Calling it the ‘Jana Ganarajyotsava Parade’, over 50 farmers’ union groups, including Dalit organisations, and labor associations will be taking part in the parade.

The rally will take place in a very organized manner with several groups starting from various different places and converge at one junction by the end of the day. The starting points arethe NICE Road junction on Tumakuru Road, Bidadi industrial junction on Mysuru Road, Devanahalli Nadi cross on Chikkabalapura road, and Hosakote toll Junction on Kolar road.
All these rallies will converge at Freedom Park in Central Bengaluru.

Several farmers from Bengaluru rural district and Devanahalli held protests in Hebbal in support of the farmers protesting against the farm laws in New Delhi.

Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) leader, Kodihalli Chandrashekhar stated, “Thousands of farmers will drive towards Bengaluru on tractors on Tuesday and reach Freedom Park. In more than 10,000 tractors and other vehicles, farmers are expected to reach Bengaluru. The parade is planned to begin soon after the Governor hoists the national flag.”

The farmer’s agitation over the Centre’s three farm laws has turned into what is being called the world’s largest-ever protest.

The farmer groups’ leaders said they would now be going ahead with their tractor parade in Delhi on Republic Day which will happen on the Outer Ring Road in Delhi. Farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohar claimed that the Delhi Police had given permission for the tractor parade after the union leaders met the police on Saturday.

Slogans of ‘Kisan Ekta Zindabad’, ‘No Farmer, No Food’ and ‘Kaale Kanoon Radd Karo’, have become a common practice now and protestors in tractors could be seen carrying union flags and even the India’s tricolour flag.

Several groups of farmers from different areas of Punjab and Haryana have already set out in their tractor-trolleys and other agricultural and non-agricultural vehicles to participate in the tractor parade on January 26.

Farmers protesting at the Singhu border have alleged that a conspiracy has been planned to shoot four farmer leaders and create disruption during their proposed tractor rally in Delhi on 26th January.

At a press conference on Friday night, the farmer leaders presented a person who claimed that his accomplices were allegedly asked to pose as policemen and baton-charge the crowd if things go out of control during the proposed tractor rally in Delhi on Republic Day. He also named police officials allegedly involved in the plan.

“Attempts are being made by agencies to disrupt the farmers’ agitation against three farm laws,” said farmer leader Kulwant Singh Sandhu at the press briefing at the Singhu border.

He further said that the masked man along with his other teammates has been threatened that their family members will be killed if they leak any information.

The farmer leaders claimed that they caught the man from the protest site at the Singhu border. He was subsequently handed over to the Haryana police and has been taken to Kundli Police Station for questioning.

According to ANI, the masked man claimed at the press conference that a plan was made to shoot four farmer leaders, who are known faces in the media.

The masked man said, “We had planned to stop farmers from moving ahead during 26 January rally and if they did not stop, we had planned to first fire in the air and then our other teammates were to fire from behind so that the Delhi Police personnel present at the spot think that the farmers are firing at them, which would prompt them to retaliate against the protesting farmers in a strong manner.”

On the other, the Delhi Police officials said that they are not aware of any masked man, adding that no formal complaint has been filed with till now, ANI reported.

Thousands of farmers, mostly from Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, have been camping at several border points of the national capital since 28th November last year, demanding a repeal of the three contentious farm laws and a legal guarantee on the minimum support price (MSP) for their crops. The farmers protesting at the Singhu border have expressed their apprehension that the new farm laws would lead to the elimination of the safety cushion of MSP and do away with the “mandi” (wholesale market) system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporates.

Supreme Court of India restated for a committee to reside for discussio on farm laws.

The Supreme Court of India, restated the requirement of a committee to reside for discussion on the farm reform laws. This would stay their implementation if the panel said so.

The SC bench said, “Whether you have faith or not, we are the Supreme Court of India, we will do our job.”

The farmer’s protests were caused when the court asked the Centre to halt the implementation of the new farm reform laws. News reports indicate that the court would stay the laws if the Centre did not do so.

Attorney General KK Venugopal, representing the government, argued, narrating Supreme Court precedents saying that the courts could not stay legislation.

The apex court expressed its disappointment with the way negotiations between the Union Government and farmers’ unions were handled over the agricultural reform laws. The top court, added, it did not have a “single petition” which said the agricultural reform laws were beneficial to the farmers.

Thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab and Haryana have been demonstrating their anger and grief through a sit-in-protest along Delhi borders. This protest started on 26th November, 2020.

The farmers demand a complete undoing of the new farm reform laws and a guarantee on the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system being retained.

Different round of talks between the Centre and the farmers’ union leaders have ended in a stalemate. Protesting farmers fear that new laws will breakdown the MSP system and corporatize farming. The Centre and the ruling BJP have remained with their statement that these laws will benefit farmers.

The farmers’ protest in India has been revolutionary to the degree of capturing the entire country’s attention. In the midst of it, the Supreme Court has decided to hear all petitions challenging the constitutionality of the three new farm laws on 11th January 2021.

Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde said, “We are given to understand that there is no improvement on the ground with respect to farmers’ protest. We had wanted to encourage talks.”

The Centre informed the court that the talks with the farmers are underway, positive and that there are “chances of some sort of understanding between the two parties.” There was a pause when the Centre and the farmers could not get onto the same page in seven round of discussions. Representatives of both sides plan to meet on 8th January 2021 to continue their talks. The farmers have threatened to organize a rally on 26th January 2021, Republic Day, if their demands are not met.

Swaraj India’s Yogendra Yadav said that a tractor march will be held at four Delhi borders on 7th January 2021 for the farmers to fight for their demands which are repealing the laws and giving legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) system. The leader said that the march was a “trailer” for what is yet to come.

Meanwhile, BJP leaders from Punjab, who were seen with Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in Delhi on 5th January 2021, stated that the issue will be solved very soon. “PM Modi knows a lot… all will be resolved and something good will happen. I cannot disclose what transpired in the meeting but something good will happen… when something is being conceived there are fears that it might get miscarriage,” said the BJP leaders after the meeting.

The Centre added that the filling of submissions in the Supreme Court will foreclose the negotiation going on between the government and farmers.

CJI Bobde said, “Will consider adjourning the case on 11th January 2021, if informed that negotiations are still underway.”

Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee’s ‘rail roko’ agitation continues in Amritsar, in protest against Farm laws. The Committee’s agitation will continue till 5th October. The farmers under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee have been squatting on rail tracks at various places in the state since September 24.

The farmers have decided to intensify their protests and phase two of the protest has begun on Thursday, October 1, with the farmers’ union extending the ‘rail roko’ stir for an indefinite period. As decided, a total of 31 unions have been staging ‘rail roko’ protests at 24 more places in Punjab from Thursday, of which nearly a dozen have been in Malwa, nearly eight places in Majha and the rest in Doaba. The protesters are demanding the rollback of the three “anti-farmer” legislations.

Farmers under the banner of KMSC in Punjab have been protesting against the new agriculture laws regulated by the Centre, with the unions saying that they will actually lead to the dismantling of the minimum support price (MSP) system. Several farmer unions have also formed a seven-member panel to coordinate with a committee of artistes in Punjab over a campaign against the Central government.

2 important amendments to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act and the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee Act passed by the Karnataka Assembly despite strong objection by the opposition parties, mainly the Congress and JD(S).

Karnataka : 2 important amendments to the Karnataka Land Reforms Act and the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee Act passed by the Karnataka Assembly despite strong objection by the opposition parties, mainly the Congress and JD(S).

Earlier, before these amendments , only farmers were allowed to purchase lands of Karnataka’s farmers. Now with these amendments, farmers will be able to sale their lands to non-farmers as the government lifts restrictions on purchasing agricultural land to non-farmers. An amendment in the APMC act allows direct purchase of agricultural produce to private players.

The Government of Karnataka to encounter protests by the pro farmer organizations and opposition parties. They gave the call for a Bandh given by the Karnataka Raitha Sangha (Karnataka Farmers’ Association) and other farmer organizations. Which is supported by the Congress, JD(S), Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) and the Left parties, at important locations in Bengaluru, Ramanagara, Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagara, Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Tumakuru, Ballari, Raichur, Chitradurga, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Bidar, Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dharwad and Davangere among others.

The farmers alleged that the APMC Act amendments will deprive them of the minimum support price and enable multinational companies and big corporate houses to directly procure produce at their rates.

The Congress, which has extended support to the protests, said it will stage a demonstration in front of its office on Race Course Road in Bengaluru.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Sunday had appealed to the protestors not to create unnecessary confusion over the amendments.

Stating that he had spoken to leaders of farmers organizations, Yediyurappa said his government’s stand and the expectations of the Prime Minister were in favor of the farmers.

Revenue Minister R Ashoka had said there would be no scope for the bandh from the government’s side.

Today, the All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), All India Kisan Mahasangh (AIKM) and Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) have called for nationwide protest Bharat Bandh’ against the farm bills passed by BJP government in the Parliament.

Members of Bhartiya Kisan Union have blocked roads, staging a protest near Delhi border. Police have been deployed to control the blockade or any other mishappening during the protest.

Additional DCP Noida said,” We have diverted traffic so that people do not face any inconvenience.”

Protests across Haryana and Punjab are expected to hamper train services as the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) has called for a ‘Rail Roko’.

PM Narendra Modi has told all BJP workers to reach out to farmers on the ground & inform them in a very simplified language about the importance of the new farm reforms and how these will empower them. Our ground connect will bust the lies and rumours being spread in the virtual world.
