Renew your Driving License in online mode: Here’s how

The Government of India now allows you to Renew your driving license online. You no longer need to visit the RTO office, for the renewal of your driving license. You can renew your driving license through an online portal that offers all the driving license-related services from applying for a new learner’s driving license to renewing your current driving license

Through an Aadhar eKYC, you can save the efforts of filling in the details in the form. By following the below guide you can get to know about how online renewal takes place.

Renew your driving license online:

You have to go to the official website of the Parivahan board https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/.
Select “Apply Online” on the left side of the menu.
Click on “Driving license Related Services”.
Select the State from where you are going to take the service.
Now, You will be redirected to a new page.
Click on apply online and then select Services on Driving License.
You will receive instructions on how to fill in your application form. Read them thoroughly before proceeding. Click ‘Next’ when you’re done reading.
Enter your birth date and current license number, Pincode, and other details correctly.
You will now come across “Required Services” which will display only those services which apply to your existing driving license. You must select “Renewal” from the given options.
In the given form, you will be required to fill in any other relevant personal and/or vehicle-related details.
Upload your photo and signature. Remember, this feature is only available for certain states.
If there are changes in your medical certificate, You need to book a slot for your test.
Once you follow all these steps, you will be redirected to an Acknowledgement page where you will be able to view your application ID (It is recommended that you print it). An SMS will be sent to your registered mobile number with all the details.
The amount payable for renewing the Driving License is Rs 200. Make the payment via net banking/debit or credit card.

Government extends validity of all driving licenses till September 30

The Centre has extended until September 30 the validity of driving licenses, vehicle registration certificates, fitness certificates and all kinds of permits, which expired after February 2020 and could not be renewed because of the restrictions imposed to check the Covid-9 pandemics. In an advisory, the Union road transport and highways ministry on Thursday directed transport departments against prosecuting motorists using the documents that have expired since February last year.

Driving without a valid license attracts a penalty of ₹5,000 while the penalties for other invalid documents are ₹5,000 (registration certificate), ₹10,000 (permit), ₹2,000-5,000 (fitness certificate).

Officials clarified that expired Pollution Under Control certificates have not been granted an extension in their validity.

“Taking into consideration the grim situation… it is advised that the validity of all the referred documents, whose extension of validity could not or was not likely be granted due to lockdown and which had expired since 1st of Feb, 2020 or would expire by 30th September, 2021, the same may be treated to be valid till 30th September, 2021. Enforcement authorities are advised to treat such documents valid till 30th September 2021,” said the advisory. “All the States and Union Territories are requested to implement this advisory in letter and spirit so that the citizens, transporters and various other organisations, which are operating under this difficult time, may not get harassed and face difficulties.”

The Delhi transport department was expected to issue a specific order following the Centre’s directive, officials said. This is the sixth such extension after earlier advisories in this regard.

A transport department official requested people against queuing up at Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in Delhi unless one has to get a learner or a permanent license for the first time. “The ministry has extended the validity of fitness, permits, licenses, registration or other documents under Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, till September 30,” said the official, who did not want to be named.

The state transport department said it was burdened with a deluge of queries regarding driving licenses, fitness certificates, and permit renewals. The processing of driving licences involves a waiting period of up to two months. The RTO at New Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan is one of the busiest transport offices in the city. It would conduct up to 250 driving tests on its semi-automatic driving test tracks daily before the pandemic. Now, only around 80 tests are conducted daily. The number of online tests for learners’ licenses has come down to 50 daily.

A second transport official cited social distancing norms, which cannot be compromised with, and added they have capped the number of daily driving tests at RTOs. “Hence, the demand is naturally much higher. We are also trying to make people aware of the Central government’s latest relaxed rules for expired transport documents. So, there is no need to panic and come to the RTOs for renewal as of now.”

Delhi’s government move to make at least 12 transport services fully online has taken some load off the RTOs. Processing of learner licenses and permanent driving licences for the first time needs applicants to visit RTOs for required tests. The government also plans to make the learner’s license process completely online. An applicant is expected to take an online test at home before the issuance of an e-learner’s license.

The Ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH) has released circular on March 26 which states that validity of driving license and vehicle documents which had expired since February 1, 2021 has been extended till 30th June.

The official twitter account of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways tweeted, “Taking into consideration the need to prevent the spread of COVID-19, MORTH has advised State and UT Govts that the Fitness, Permit (all types), License, Registration or any other concerned document(s) may be treated to be valid till 30 June 2021.”

The government has extended the validity of documents like driving license (DL), registration certificate (RC) and permits till June 30, 2021due to the coronavirus pandemic. The deadline for the validity of these documents were earlier March 31, 2021. The ministry of road, transport and highways (MoRTH) issued an advisory to the states about the extension. The documents whose validity could not be granted due to the lockdown or had expired since February 1, 2021, or would expire on March 31, 2021, will all be given an extension, as told to states by MoRTH.

Driving license can also be renewed anytime now between one year before its expiry till one year after its expiry, a step which was taken will be likely to benefit citizens living away from their hometowns or who is visiting abroad. MoRTH said in circular that the decision “will help out citizens in availing transport-related services”.

Earlier advisories were issued in 2020 in the month of March 30, June 9, August 24 and December 27. The documents that will be eligible for the relaxation fall under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.

It may be the last advisory in view of the extension of vehicle document validity. The government has also asked states to implement this advisory in letter and spirit, so that citizens do not face any issues and don’t get disturbed.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari told in Lok Sabha in a written reply on last Thursday that the rules and the passing percentage for the driving license test will be reformed. “In the case of a vehicle having a reverse gear, driving the vehicle backwards, reverse it into a limited opening either to the right or left under control and with reasonable accuracy is one of the parameters of qualifying in the driving skill test,” as quoted by news agency PTI.
