Press Information Bureau on Wednesday highlighted preparations for India’s upcoming 2027 Census, describing it as the “world’s largest Census” and urging citizens to fully cooperate with enumerators during the nationwide exercise.

In an official statement shared through social media, the government emphasized that all information collected under the Census Act, 1948 remains strictly confidential and would be used only for statistical analysis, policy planning and national development purposes.

The statement said the Census exercise forms a crucial part of the broader “Viksit Bharat” vision aimed at strengthening governance, development planning and welfare delivery through accurate demographic and socio-economic data collection. Authorities also appealed to residents across the country to actively participate during the houselisting operations and assist census officials in completing the exercise efficiently.

Officials reiterated that personal data gathered during Census operations cannot be disclosed publicly and is protected under legal provisions of the Census Act. The assurance comes amid increasing public sensitivity around data privacy, digital governance and large-scale national data collection exercises.

India’s Census operation is considered one of the most complex administrative exercises in the world due to the country’s vast population, geographical diversity and multilingual landscape. Millions of households across urban, rural and remote regions are covered during the nationwide enumeration process.

The previous nationwide Census scheduled for 2021 was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a prolonged gap in updated population and socio-economic data. The upcoming Census is expected to play a major role in future planning related to welfare schemes, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, urbanization and electoral representation.

Government agencies have already begun groundwork linked to digital infrastructure, training, houselisting procedures and logistical coordination for the massive operation. Officials are also expected to deploy upgraded technological systems to streamline data collection and improve accuracy.

The Census remains a key tool for policymakers in determining resource allocation and tracking demographic changes across states and districts. Experts believe updated data will become increasingly important for planning India’s long-term economic and social development strategies as the country continues witnessing rapid urban growth and population shifts.

Authorities have urged citizens not to fall for misinformation regarding Census data usage and to extend full support to authorized enumerators during the survey process.

The Centre has repeatedly stated that accurate public participation is essential for effective governance and evidence-based policymaking under the larger national development framework.
