Welspun Michigan Engineers secures Rs. 290.88 crore contract for Mumbai’s Mogra Storm Water Pumping Station

Welspun Michigan Engineers Limited (WMEL), a subsidiary of Welspun Enterprises Limited, has been awarded a major engineering contract by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for the design, construction, and subsequent operations and maintenance of the Mogra Storm Water Pumping Station in Mumbai.

The Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract, which carries a total value of Rs. 290.88 Crore (inclusive of GST), includes a comprehensive seven-year operations and maintenance (O&M) phase. This pivotal project is scheduled for completion within 20 months, pending the acquisition of requisite statutory permissions from bodies such as the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the Mangrove Cell, and the High Court.

The pumping station project is part of a critical flood mitigation initiative aimed at efficiently managing excess rainwater during heavy monsoon conditions. The station will serve as a vital infrastructure asset by reducing flood risks in several vulnerable areas of Mumbai, including Oshiwara, Andheri, Versova, and Jogeshwari.

Highlighting the significance of the project, Mr. Saurin Patel, Managing Director of WMEL, commented, “The Mogra Storm Water Pumping Station is a vital infrastructure project designed to mitigate monsoon flooding in Andheri and surrounding areas. This initiative reflects our unwavering commitment to enhancing Mumbai’s resilience against heavy rainfall and advancing urban flood management.”

This contract represents WMEL’s largest independent project in the pumping station segment, further solidifying its reputation in urban infrastructure development. With an existing order book of Rs. 2,546 Crore as of January 31, 2025 – which includes the Dharavi to Ghatkopar Tunnelling order valued at approximately Rs. 1,150 Crore – the new project will elevate WMEL’s outstanding orders to nearly Rs. 2,791.76 Crore (excluding GST), with Rs. 124.75 Crore attributed to O&M works.

Major fire in Mumbai’s Dharavi, no casualty reported

A massive fire broke out in Dharavi, Mumbai’s largest slum, in the wee morning of Wednesday, February 22, 2023, but no one was injured, according to officials.

The fire broke out about 4.22 a.m. in some shanties in the Kamala Nagar and Shahu Nagar areas near the Dharavi fire station.

At least 12 fire tenders, eight water tankers and other fire brigade vehicles are engaged in the firefighting operation that is currently underway.

The fire has been contained to some huts, but no one has been injured, he added.

The official stated that personnel from the Mumbai Police, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) administrative ward, and other agencies are on the scene, and that the cause of the fire is being investigated.

In a virtual press conference held at Geneva, the WHO chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, emphasized on the possibility of bringing the Virus under control.

By quoting Mumbai’s Dharavi as an example, he asserted that with aggressive measures, the outbreak can still be controlled, even if the numbers have doubled. He gave examples of countries where the virus had surpassed alarming levels and yet was controlled.

“And some of these examples are Italy, Spain and South Korea and even in Dharavi — a densely packed area in the mega city of Mumbai”, he said while explaining to people how an intense outbreak can be controlled.

He further added that “a strong focus on community engagement and the basics of testing, tracing, isolating and treating all those that are sick is key to breaking chains of transmission and suppressing the virus”.

In the month of April, Asia’s largest slum, Dharavi, was a COVID-19 hotspot. By the month of May, the area reported 1216 positive cases along with 56 deaths. However, with aggressive measures by the WHO and local authorities, the area reported zero deaths due to the pandemic in the month of June. It also recorded a reduced case doubling time from 43 days in May to 78 days in June.

The increase of cases in the area is also not alarming now. The growth rate of the spread was recorded 1.02% in June as opposed to 12% in April.

The Mumbai civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been a key player in curbing the spread of the virus. The corporation has also been applauded by the center for “actively chasing” the virus and taking proactive measures for the same.

The Coronavirus pandemic is the most alarming health situation so far. With the world touching a 12.4 million case count, it is imperative to take aggressive measures to control the spread of this outbreak.
