The measures specifically target companies linked to the Russian ammunition industry, including major entities like the Sverdlov State Owned Enterprise. Additionally, revenue sources in key sectors such as metals, diamonds, and energy are being addressed to further restrict Russian economic capabilities.

Among those targeted are Russian importers and manufacturers of machine tools essential for the production of defence systems, ranging from missiles to fighter jets. By sanctioning these entities, the UK aims to disrupt Russia’s military supply chain and hinder its ability to procure advanced weaponry.

The UK’s actions align with a broader Western effort to impose sanctions on Russia, with the European Union recently approving a package of measures targeting nearly 200 entities and individuals involved in supporting Moscow’s military activities or human rights violations, including the kidnapping of Ukrainian children.

Biden emphasized the vulnerability of the displaced population in the southern Gazan city, stressing the urgent need for their protection. The dire situation was underscored by a Palestinian doctor in Rafah, who highlighted the prevailing atmosphere of fear among the populace.

UN human rights chief Volker Türk echoed Biden’s concerns, expressing alarm at the potential devastation of an assault on Rafah, which could result in significant civilian casualties. The looming threat of an Israeli ground operation in Rafah was intensified by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration of intent to root out Hamas militants entrenched in the city.
