Chennai Floods 2023: Tamil Nadu’s capital submerges as Cyclone Michaung effects south India

The cyclone Michaung has created heavy destruction with its arrival to India. Most of the parts in southern part of India are affected by heavy rain due to this cyclone. The capital city of Tamil Nadu, i.e., Chennai is flooded after it recorded heavy rainfall. Visuals from Chennai are horrifying as common people are facing a lot of problems with their livelihood.

At the same time, police, army and other forces are proving why they are called as our heroes with their efforts of helping out people in this tough situation. Even the Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings shared a video of praising their efforts.

Chennai is called as the automobile and technology manufacturing hub of India. A city with over 6 million population is dependent upon boats, ropes and rafts for their survival from the high intensity flood water.

Not only CSK, but the football tournament Indian Super League (ISL) franchise Chennaiyin FC has praised all the frontline workers who are putting efforts to bring back situation to normal.

In a social media post on X, the football club wrote: “Many of us stayed at home. Stocked up and dry. But many of them stayed out. Cold and wet. Through the storm. Clearing trees, fixing broken lines, pumping out water and getting food and aid to those that couldn’t help themselves. Today the city is coming back to life, and they did that. Kept it alive.”

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M K Stalin has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking 50.6 billion rupees ($607.01 million) for the relief work.

Other than Tamil Nadu, cyclone Michaung has also created destruction in Andhra Pradesh.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has ordered all officers and departments to be on high alert as Cyclone Michaung makes landfall on the Andhra coast, ready for urgent relief and rescue operations. To respond to the severe cyclonic storm, a total of 29 NDRF teams have been sent to Puducherry, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh.

A red alert has been issued in eight locations, including Tirupati, Nellore, Prakasam, Bapatla, Krishna, West Godavari, Konaseema, and Kakinada, in anticipation of the storm’s impact on Andhra Pradesh.

As Cyclone Michaung made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast near Bapatla, authorities released advisories and safety measures. Up until Thursday, bad weather is predicted by weather agencies for the state and the surrounding areas.

Tuesday’s downpour in Odisha’s southern regions was caused by the remnants of the powerful Cyclone Michaung. According to the state’s Special Relief Commissioner, Satyabrata Sahu, five teams of the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and eight teams from the fire service department have been sent for rescue operations in the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam.

At least 17 people have died in southern India as a result of the cyclone and the intense rains that followed. Particularly in Tamil Nadu, continuous and heavy rains have caused flood-like conditions. Chennai, the state capital, has seen interruptions, including flooded residences and lost internet and cell service.

Actor Vishnu Vishal stated that his home had flooded and said that a disaster management team had saved him and his wife, the talented badminton player Jwala Gutta. Notably, Aamir Khan was also included in photos uploaded by Vishnu Vishal. Khan was saved from hours of stranding on an inflatable boat.

Chennai Airport faces massive flight cancellations and delays after cyclone Michaung

Cyclone Michaung’s torrential rainfall caused the airport runways to flood severely, forcing the cancellation of over a thousand flights that connected Chennai. One of India’s top airlines, IndiGo, announced that 550 flights nationwide had been canceled following the airport’s brief shutdown of operations. Additionally, 16 and 10 flights from Chennai were halted by Air India and Vistara, respectively.

Even after the rain has stopped, Chennai is still dealing with the fallout, finding it difficult to remove floodwaters and evaluate the damage done by the heavy downpour.

Due to flooding, Chennai airport was forced to close its runways on Monday, grounding all aircraft as floodwaters entered into the premises. Since the storm is currently headed towards Andhra Pradesh, the airport in Visakhapatnam is closed.

Although it had to cancel an extra 60 flights today, IndiGo reported that it resumed flight operations from Chennai at noon. Additionally, Vistara started flying again to and from Chennai. IndiGo is waiving cancellation and rescheduling fees for impacted passengers, and Air India is not charging for rescheduling flights that were impacted on either yesterday or today.

The scenario developed when Cyclone Michaung dumped a lot of rain on Chennai starting on Sunday night, causing extensive flooding throughout the city. In addition, a number of trains were canceled, guaranteeing passengers a complete reimbursement.

Even though the rain has ceased, there is still water and debris on the runways and taxiways, which are being removed by additional labor and Civilian Firearms Teams.
