The German Federal Foreign Office has confirmed that it is in direct contact with local authorities in Lisbon, Portugal, regarding an ongoing health crisis involving a cruise ship currently diverted to the city’s port. The ministry officially announced that one of the three individuals who have died following a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the vessel was a German national.

The situation concerns the MV Hondius, a Dutch-flagged cruise ship that has become the focus of an international health response. While the vessel was previously reported to be near Cape Verde, reports now indicate it has been diverted to the port of Lisbon to facilitate emergency health protocols. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed that the vessel is currently the site of a suspected hantavirus outbreak, with at least one case laboratory-confirmed and several others under investigation.

According to the cruise operator and foreign ministry representatives, the three deceased passengers include two Dutch nationals and one German national. While the fatalities are being investigated in connection with the hantavirus, health officials are performing clinical assessments to definitively link all deaths to the pathogen. At least one other passenger, identified as a British citizen, is receiving specialized treatment for the virus in intensive care.

Portuguese health authorities, working in coordination with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the WHO, are managing the quarantine and medical evaluation of the approximately 150 passengers and crew remaining on board. The German Foreign Ministry has stated that it is coordinating closely with Portuguese officials and the cruise line to ensure necessary consular support is provided to affected German passengers and the families of the deceased.

Medical experts are currently focusing on containing the transmission of the rare, rodent-borne disease, which typically spreads through contact with infected animal waste rather than person-to-person transmission. As of May 4, 2026, the investigation into how the pathogen was introduced on the vessel remains ongoing as part of a larger, urgent public health operation.
