HCLTech and CrowdStrike have announced the expansion of their strategic partnership with the introduction of Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM) services. This new offering is designed to provide continuous, intelligence-led identification, prioritisation, and remediation of exposure across various platforms including endpoints, cloud, identity, applications, and data. The service aims to help enterprises maintain a constant view of exposure and address risks more effectively.

The partnership combines CrowdStrike’s advanced adversary intelligence with AI-driven threat detection to operationalise real-time insights by correlating exposure, threat, and cloud posture signals. The AI-native CrowdStrike Falcon® platform, along with patented ExPRT.AI and agentic innovation, powers the Falcon® Exposure Management. This system rapidly identifies and prioritises vulnerabilities most likely to be exploited, based on adversary activity and real-world attack paths.

HCLTech applies these prioritised insights through its VERITY framework and AI Force, its GenAI-led service transformation platform, to accelerate remediation and continuously reduce attack surface risks across enterprises. Windows users hit by Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) due to Crowdstrike update and here’s how to fix it

On Friday, many Windows users suddenly encountered the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), causing major disruptions around the world. Initially, it seemed like Microsoft might be at fault, but it turns out the problem was actually due to a recent update from CrowdStrike, a US-based cybersecurity firm.

What Happened?

The BSOD is a serious error screen that makes your computer freeze up and become temporarily unusable. These types of errors usually happen because of software problems.

The Cause

The issue was traced back to a recent update from CrowdStrike. This update included a problematic file that caused the BSOD for many users. It’s important to note that this wasn’t a Microsoft issue but rather something that originated from CrowdStrike.

Official Responses

Microsoft acknowledged the problem and said, “We’re aware of an issue affecting Windows devices due to an update from a third-party software platform.”

George Kurtz, CEO of CrowdStrike, clarified that they are working to fix the problem caused by a defect in a single update for Windows systems. He assured that this issue isn’t a cyberattack. He also mentioned that Mac and Linux users are not affected. CrowdStrike has identified the problem, fixed it, and users can get updates and support through their support portal.

How to Fix It

Here are two main ways to solve the BSOD issue:

Delete the Faulty File:
- Restart your computer in safe mode.
- Go to the folder with the CrowdStrike file.
- Delete the file that ends with the number 291.
- Restart your computer again.
Use Point-in-Time Restore:
- This feature lets you roll back your computer to a state before the update.
- Choose a restore point that is as recent as possible to avoid losing too much data.

Impact and Response

The outage caused significant problems, particularly at airports. Airlines like SpiceJet, Indigo, and Akasa experienced major disruptions at Mumbai and Delhi airports. Most systems are now getting fixes.

Sundareshwar K from PwC India described this as a “black swan” event, meaning it was an unexpected problem that highlighted the need for better cybersecurity strategies. Vishal Salvi, CEO of Quick Heal Technologies, said this incident serves as a wake-up call for businesses to focus on proactive defense and have solid backup and recovery plans.

Although the BSOD problem from CrowdStrike’s update has mostly been resolved, it shows how crucial it is to have strong cybersecurity measures and backup plans to handle unexpected tech issues.

George Kurtz, the president and CEO of CrowdStrike, has commented on the huge disruptions caused by a recent upgrade to the Falcon sensor of the firm, which has left many PCs stuck at the recovery screen. Global operations at airports, businesses, banks and government offices have been severely affected by this issue.

In a post on X, Kurtz assured customers and stakeholders, saying, “CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated, and a fix has been deployed.”

Kurtz highlighted CrowdStrike’s full commitment to fixing the issue and bringing everything back to normal. He advised affected customers to the company’s support portal for the most recent updates and promised continued communication through their website.

He further added, “We further recommend organizations ensure they’re communicating with CrowdStrike representatives through official channels. Our team is fully mobilized to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers.”

The company’s stock has seen significant growth over the past year. On July 24, 2023, CrowdStrike’s stock was trading at $155.60. It reached $343.05 on July 18, 2024, just a day before the current incident. This represents a more than 120% increase in share price over the course of one year, effectively doubling the company’s stock value.

With a history of interference in US political events, Iran’s state-sponsored hackers are suspected to be planning similar disruptive tactics in the upcoming elections.

CrowdStrike, renowned for its expertise in combating cyber threats, specifically points towards the Islamic Republic’s history of meddling in US political affairs. The report meticulously details past instances, including the late 2020 Information Operations campaign, where Iranian actors unleashed a multifaceted attack. This involved sending intimidating emails to voters, impersonating a far-right US group and swaying their votes. Additionally, they disseminated fabricated videos alleging ballot tampering, aiming to sow distrust in the electoral system.

The report further predicts that these tactics, along with Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks and website defacements, are likely to resurface in 2024. These malicious activities have historically targeted state and local government entities, aiming to disrupt election infrastructure and sow chaos.

Furthermore, the report highlights a concerning trend observed in the latter half of 2023. “Iran-nexus adversaries” and Middle Eastern hacktivists were observed aligning their cyber operations with the kinetic operations stemming from the Israel-Hamas conflict. This suggests a potential escalation of cyber activities in the wake of geopolitical tensions, raising concerns about the 2024 US elections being collateral damage.

CrowdStrike’s warning echoes similar concerns voiced by Microsoft earlier this month. The tech giant identified Russia, Iran, and China as potential actors aiming to influence the upcoming elections in the United States and other countries.
