Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury suspended from Lok Sabha; Congress calls the move ‘undemocratic’

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, leader of the Congress and the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, was suspended from the Lower House on Thursday due to “repeated misconduct” pending a privileges committee probe.

According to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, Chowdhury disrupts the House whenever Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ministers speak on the third and final day of the discussion on the no-confidence motion brought forth by the Opposition against the Centre. A voice vote was used to approve the resolution.

The action taken against its floor leader was deemed “undemocratic” by the Congress. Manickam Tagore, the Lower House’s party whip, referred to the behavior as “unbelievable” on X (formerly Twitter). The largest opposition figure in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, was suspended for the first time for speaking out against Modi, he said. Unbelievable. Undemocratic. Criticize the autocracy.

In an interview with the news agency ANI, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of throwing obstacles in the way of the opposition group INDIA’s efforts to be heard. “By engaging in the process of suspending Derek O’Brien, AAP MPs, and now the process of suspending Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the BJP has been preventing the INDIA alliance from voicing its opinion. In response to his own suspension, Chowdhury defended his parliamentary remarks. I didn’t insult Prime Minister Modi. I didn’t mean to belittle Prime Minister Modi… He didn’t think he was being offended. As a result, his courtiers (darbaris) lodged this complaint against me. Speaking to the House, Joshi had stated, “It has become unfortunate for him (Adhir) and has become a habit. The Congress party, which is the main opposition party in this House, is led by him. Despite numerous warnings, he has not changed. “He consistently makes these unfounded accusations in his debates and works to undermine the authority of the executive branch. His claims are unsupported by any evidence, and he never expresses regret. We also sought an apology from him today. When the Home Minister spoke, he behaved similarly, Joshi continued.

ED attaches Karti Chidambaram’s properties

New Delhi, Apr 18: The Enforcement Directorate (ED), who has been probing alleged money laundering case of INX Media Pvt Ltd, attached four properties of Congress leader and MP Karti P Chidambaram and others under the provisions of PMLA, 2002.

ED tweeted and informed that it has attached four properties (three movable and one immovable property located at Coorg District of Karnataka) valued at Rs 11.04 crore belonging to Karti P Chidambaram and others in the case of INX Media Pvt Ltd and others under the provisions of PMLA, 2002.

According to sources, a provisional order under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) has been issued against Karti.

Karti Chidambaram, son of Congress leader P Chidambaram, is a MP from Sivaganga area in Tamil Nadu.

According to sources, Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the wife of jailed Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, has stage 2 invasive cancer and is currently being treated at a private hospital in Dera Bassi.

In a 1988 case involving a road rage death, the former chief of the state Congress is currently in prison for one year in Patiala Central Prison.

Navjot Singh Sidhu, a former chief of the Punjab Congress, was not released from prison on January 26 since his name was not on the list of cases granting special remission to convicts held in Punjab jails during the second phase of the commemorations for the nation’s 75th Independence Day, known as “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.”

Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi was discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Tuesday about 3 p.m., according to Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman Board of Management of the hospital.

With a viral ailment, the senior leader was brought to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. When she was brought to the hospital on Wednesday, she was accompanied by her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Doctors at the hospital reported she was stable and recuperating well on Friday.

“Mrs Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson UPA, who is taken to the hospital for a viral respiratory illness, is stable and gradually recovering,” the hospital stated in a statement.

Sr Cong leader Satheeshan Pacheni passes away

Former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) General Secretary Satheeshan Pacheni died after suffering brain haemorrhage at a private hospital at Chala near here on Thursday. He was 54.

The former District Congress Committee (DCC) president and former KSU president was undergoing treatment since November 19 due to health issues.

He is survived by wife KV Reena and two children Jawahar and Sania. He belongs to CPI(M) stronghold, Pacheni, near Taliparamba and joined Congress in his school days.

He served as the KSU State president in 1999 and Kannur DCC president during 2016 and 2021, Director of Consumer Fed during Oommen Chandy led UDF government.

He also served as the KPCC General secretary during 2001 to 2012 and contested for Congress led United Democratic Front (UDF), but he lost in a slight margin against Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidates from Taliparamba assembly constituency (1996) against M V Govindan of CPI(M), Malampuzha assembly constituency (2001 and 2006) against former Chief Minister V S Achuthanandhan of CPI(M), Palakkad Lok sabha constituency(2009) against M B Rajesh of CPI(M), Kannur assembly constituency (2016 and 2021) against Ramachandran Kadannappally of Congress(S).

The body will be kept at Taliparamba Congress block committee office from 1600 hrs and taken to his brother’s house at Ammanapara Thursday and will be brought to Kannur DCC Friday to pay tributes by the people from all walks of life.

The funeral function will be held Friday at Payyambalam public crematorium in the afternoon. Congress called a shut down from 0700 to 1200 hrs at Kannur corporation limits as a respect to the departed leader, said DCC president Martin George.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Opposition leader V D Satheeshan, KPCC president K Surendran and LDF State convenor E P Jayarajan gave the condolence message to the departed leader.

Congress condemns attack on leader Sudip Barman ahead of assembly bye-elections in Tripura

New Delhi, June 20: The Congress on Monday condemned the alleged attack on its party leader Sudip Roy Barman by BJP workers ahead of the Assembly bye-elections in Tripura and demanded immediate arrest of those involved behind the incident.

Barman, who switched over to the grand old party. After he had severed his association with the BJP few months back, is contesting in the bye-elections. From one of the four Assembly seats in Tripura. Where polling will be held on June 23.

Alleging ruling BJP’s involvement, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh in a tweet in Hindi wrote, “I strongly condemn the deliberate attack on our senior leader in Tripura, Sudip Roy Barman ji and demand immediate arrest of the culprit.”

Endorsing his party colleague, Congress MP Abdul Khaleque in a tweet wrote, “Strongly condemned brutal attack on five time MLA and Congress candidate of Agartala bye-election Sudip Roy Barman by BJP goons in presence of Tripura Minister.”

The Tripura Congress has alleged it’s nominee from Agartala Assembly seat was allegedly attacked by BJP workers on Sunday night.

Last week, Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress. Which is also in the fray, had submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission of India. In which it claimed that people affiliated with the BJP allegedly attacked its party workers.

The TMC also demanded immediate action against the perpetrators and urged to ensure free and fair polls.

Among the prominent candidate in the bye-elections include Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. Who is BJP’s nominee from Town Bardowali Assembly constituency.

Saha recently took over as the CM of Tripura after Biplab Kumar Deb quit the post.

Congress meet to discuss challenges in 3-day brainstorming camp

New Delhi, May 12: The challenges before the Congress party and the country are the same, party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said on Thursday, a day before a three-day brainstorming camp begins at Udaipur in Rajasthan. Talking about the Chintan Shivir camp, Surjewala said. “In these trying times, when ‘Divide and Rule; has become the state policy. We resolve to re-dedicate ourselves to ‘Nav Sankalp’, that is, to once again propel India onto the path of progress, prosperity and societal harmony. “The challenges before the country and challenges before Congress are interlinked. As they ultimately reflect upon the ethos of India. Which the current dispensation has assaulted. And all this needs to be looked at”. He told the media. “The challenges before the nation are challenges faced by each one of us… For the country to move ahead, those challenges need to be addressed… ”

BJP has presented its own set of principles which are founded upon targeting the minorities, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians and creating a fear psychosis among the majority vis-a-vis the minority, that is the policy they are now following officially,” Surjewala said. “It also warrants that elections will no longer be fought on issues of progress, prosperity, peace, schools, colleges, universities, infrastructure, power stations, MSMEs, jobs…. but they will be fought on bulldozer, loudspeaker, Shamshan vs Kabristan… This is a serious threat to the very existence of the country…”

He said Congress leaders will discuss at the camp how these challenges will be dealt with. “How is Congress going to address this new challenge? What are the organizational weaknesses the Congress has? What course correction the Congress needs to take. Is the new way forward and new milestones that Congress has to traverse?” He said the Congress wants to “introspect, contemplate and reflect” both on their failures and successes as an organisation. “The nation is facing an unprecedented crisis. We have to not just evaluate our situation, but bring changes required for the present times,” he said.

The Congress has identified six groups to examine. And submit their primary reports on actionables. For the political situation, social justice and empowerment, economy, organizational reforms, farmers and youth. These groups will present their first impressions for a conclusive discussion during the Chintan Shivir. The 430 invitees to Chintan Shivir will be divided among different groups. And they will discuss and deliberate over a period of three days. Various facets and challenges, in order to lay down a road map. The conclusions will be presented to the Congress President. And thereafter to the Congress Working Committee, for final shape and approval. “The road map will provide a way forward not only for the Congress Party to meet up with the current set of reverses and challenges, but will also pave the way for a resilient, strong and inclusive nation,” Surjewala added.

Senior Congress leader, Oscar Fernandes passes away at the age of 80

On Monday, a former Union minister and a senior Congress leader Oscar Fernandes died at a private hospital in Mangaluru. He was 80.

On July 18, Fernandes was taken to Yenepoya hospital, as he suffered a fall while doing his regular exercise, during exercise Fernandes lost his balance and got hit against the wall. After the accident, he was in undergoing treatment as it is said that he had got a clot in his brain.

Fernandes was the Cabinet minister for transport, road, and highways in the Congress-led UPA government. He was also in charge of the ministry of labour and employment. Senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily gave his condolences to Fernandes’ family, stating that he had “lost a personal friend, the nation has lost a great leader and the party has lost a devoted leader.”

During the late 1980s before Fernandes has been the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, and in 1983 he was appointed as the Joint Secretary of the All India Congress Committee. He was also a five-time Lok Sabha MP between 1983 and 1997, in April 1998 he was called for the Rajya Sabha.

Congress will not be breaking the MVA government; Will continue support for 5 years

Former chief minister and the senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday said that the Congress no longer has intention to break the 3 party alliance and it will continue to support the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) for next five years.

Prithviraj Chavan told to the Indian express, “The Congress will not break the three-party alliance which formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. We are fully confident that the Maha Vikas Aghadi government will last a full five-year term. This alliance was formed to keep the BJP out of power and therefore there is no question of withdrawing support to the government from the Congress side.”

Chavan gave a reaction following the bitterness caused by the MVA government over MPCC chief Nana Patoles said statement that Congress will be contesting future elections by themselves. Even Mumbai chief Bhai Japtap made a similar remark. Surprisingly Nana Patole has expressed his desire to become the chief minister.

This statement has made Shiv Sena Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray upset indirectly attacking the Congress last week during their foundation day celebration.

Chavan said that Congress was trying to weaken the MVA government. “There is nothing wrong in saying that the Congress will contest all elections on its own strength. If we say that we will contest one-third of the seats, then we will have only 80 seats out of the 288 seats…Then our workers and leaders will not feel energized to work on other seats,” he added.

Chavan lastly said that the Congress party’s primary target in the immediate future are the local body polls. “We will see how the party fares in these polls… It will help decide our future course of actions.”

“Congress Needs Reforms”: says veteran Congress leader Kapil Sibal

The Congress must bring widespread reforms across all levels of the organization to show it is no longer in a state of inertia and to present itself as a viable political alternative to the BJP, party veteran Kapil Sibal said on Sunday.

Mr Sibal, who was among the G-23 leaders whose letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi last year demanding a meaningful overhaul of the party had triggered a storm, hoped the organization polls, recently postponed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, will “happen sooner than later”.

In an exclusive interview to PTI, the former union minister acknowledged that at present there is no strong political alternative to the BJP but said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lost the moral authority to rule and the Congress can present an alternative due to the current mood in the country.

He also noted that while forming committees to review election losses is good, it will have no impact unless remedies suggested are implemented.

Nothing that the party’s alliance with the all India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) in Assam and Indian Secular Front (ISF) in West Bengal were “not thought through”, Mr Sibal said the Congress has failed to drive home the point that minority and majority communication are equally dangerous for the country.

He cited this as one of the reasons for the poor performance of the party in recent assembly polls.

Amid defections of young leaders- Jyotiradity Scindia and now Jitin Prasada – to the BJP, the former minister said “there is an urgent need to strike a balance between experience and youth.”

He has earlier said that from “aaya ram, gaya ram politics, it has come to “Prasada Politics now” and asked whether Jitin will get the “Prasad” from the BJP, suggesting that leaders were moving out of the party to serve their political interests.
