Massive blast at firecracker factory in Madhya Pradesh, 3 dead, many injured admitted at Dewas district hospital

A massive explosion followed by a major blaze ripped through a firecracker factory in Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, triggering panic in the surrounding area and leaving multiple workers dead and injured. Officials said at least three people have been confirmed dead, while over 20 others sustained injuries, many of them critically. Authorities fear the death toll may rise further.

According to preliminary information from local authorities, the blast occurred inside a firecracker manufacturing unit, after which flames rapidly engulfed parts of the factory premises. Thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from the site as emergency response teams rushed to the area.

Police officials and district administration personnel immediately launched rescue and firefighting operations, while ambulances were deployed to shift injured persons to nearby hospitals. Authorities said the exact number of casualties and injuries was yet to be officially confirmed, but several workers are feared to have been trapped inside the unit at the time of the explosion.

Senior officials said the intensity of the blast damaged portions of the structure and created panic among residents living near the factory. Fire brigade teams continued efforts to control the blaze for several hours amid concerns over additional explosions caused by stored firecracker materials.

Local administration officials stated that a detailed investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the explosion and whether safety norms were violated at the facility. Authorities are also expected to examine the factory’s operational permissions, fire safety clearances and storage conditions.

Firecracker factory accidents have repeatedly raised safety concerns across India, particularly in units dealing with highly combustible chemicals and explosive materials. Investigations into previous incidents in different states have often pointed to overcrowded storage, illegal manufacturing practices and inadequate safety measures as major causes behind such explosions.

Officials in Dewas said rescue operations were still underway and further details regarding casualties and damage would be released after verification. Security personnel also cordoned off the surrounding area to prevent civilians from approaching the affected site.

The incident comes amid renewed scrutiny over industrial safety standards in hazardous manufacturing sectors, especially after multiple factory fire and explosion cases reported across different parts of the country in recent years.
