Raman once said, the outstanding investigators "are claimed as nationals by one or another of many different countries. Yet in the truest sense, they belong to the whole world."

Sir Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman was born in 1888 in Tiruchirappalli in Madras Presidency (now Tamil Nadu). Dr Raman was the second child in a family of eight children in Tiruchirappalli, where his father Chandrasekhara Iyer was a teacher in a local high school. <span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}">

When Dr Raman was four years old his father accepted a post of lecturer in Mathematics, physics and physical geography in the coastal town of Vishakhapatnam and then moved there. Raman spent the next 10 years of his life in Vishakhapatnam going through primary and secondary schools and two years of college over there. <span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}">

Raman passed the B. A degree in 1904, at the age of 15, winning first place and gold medals in English and Physics. In 1907 he went ahead and took his Master’s at the age of 18. One of his professors said, “The best student I have had in thirty years”. During his Master’s he published a paper in the Philosophical Magazine (London) in November 1906, titled, Unsymmetrical diffraction bands due to a rectangular aperture observed when light is reflected very obliquely at the face of a prism.<span class="EOP SCXW210027536 BCX8" data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}">

In 1921, he had travelled to Europe to attend the Congress of Universities of the British Empire at Oxford. During his journey, he sent two papers to the journal Nature positing that the colour of the sea was due to a light scattering by the water molecules a phenomenon he called molecular diffraction.<span class="EOP SCXW71816957 BCX8" data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}">

He was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society in 1924. In 1925 he observed the frequency that shifted through the scattered light in more than 50 liquids which he called modified scattering. By 1926 he established the Indian Journal of Physics and acted as its first editor and posted his research in the journal which was later called the Raman effect. After his publication he sent in 1928 he sent reprints to scientists in the United States, France, Weimar Republic (now Germany) and the Soviet Union. In this way, he was given credit for the discovery.

By the next year, he was called by the Faraday Society of London to attend an event recognising his contribution in the field of physics. That same year he was given knighthood by the British government in India. In 1930, Sir C. V. Raman received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his ‘discovery of scattering of light’.

With his affiliation with Calcutta University, he later became a professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore where he worked for 15 years. <span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}">

Post-independence, the legendary physicist established the Raman Institute in 1948 of which he also became the director of the institute.<span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}"> Sir Raman was among the first four recipients of India’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ when it was started in 1954.<span data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}"> A year later he received a letter from the Deputy Security of the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development asking him to submit a report of his subjects and the work done by him.<span class="EOP SCXW123500666 BCX8" data-ccp-props="{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}">

Rajiv Gandhi, an Indian politician and parliamentarian, was the youngest ever Prime Minister of India. The third consecutive member of his family to hold the post, Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister at only the age of 40 in 1984, shortly after his mother’s assassination.

Born on August 20, 1944, in Bombay, he was a mere three years of age when India attained independence. As his grandfather was sworn in as the first Prime Minister of India, his family migrated to New Delhi from Lucknow. Rajiv Gandhi spent much of his childhood with his grandfather in the Teen Murti House, where his mother was the Prime Minister’s hostess.

Despite hailing from a renowned family of freedom fighters and politicians, Rajiv Gandhi had little interest in the field himself. After completing his early education in Dehradun, he enrolled in Imperial College, London for his higher studies. During his time in London, he enrolled in a course in Mechanical Engineering.

His true passion had always been flying. Therefore, upon his return to India, he took the entrance exam for the Delhi Flying Club and passed with flying colours. He would eventually go on to obtain a commercial licence and officially become a pilot for Indian Airlines, a domestic carrier of the time.

It was the death of his brother Sanjay Gandhi in 1980 due to a plane crash that would inevitably push Rajiv into the political arena. He faced pressure from both inside the Congress Party as well as from outside forces to assist his mother, then Prime Minister, in overseeing the running of the country. Winning the by-elections held due to his Brother’s death, he became the Member of Parliament from the Amethi constituency of Uttar Pradesh.

The world tasted the true essence of his leadership for the first time during the Asian Games held in India in 1982. Rajiv Gandhi was entrusted with ensuring the timely construction of the required infrastructure, and the smooth running of the games. He took the challenge head-on and succeeded too.

It was yet another tragic event that propelled Rajiv Gandhi to the post of Prime Minister. After the vicious assassination of his mother in 1984, he was left with no choice but to follow through with the responsibility he was charged with. In a landslide victory during the elections held in 1984, the Congress Party claimed 401 out of the 508 Lok Sabha seats and Rajiv Gandhi was named the Prime Minister of India.

Rajiv Gandhi was a pragmatic leader and was known to seek counsel from other members of his party and abstained from making reckless decisions. His administration took strenuous measures to reform the government bureaucracy and liberalise the country’s economy. His stint as a political leader was short, and though he expressed his reluctance in gaining the leadership role, his work as the Prime Minister of the country proved that he too could lead the country well.

Here are 10 facts you might not know about Rajiv Gandhi:

On 20 August every year, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is observed as Sadbhavana Diwas or Harmony Day.

Rajiv Gandhi went to Welham Boys’ School in Dehradun for some time but soon he was enrolled into the elite Doon School located in the foothills of the Himalayas. Later, his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi was also sent to this school where the two completed their early education together.

Rajiv Gandhi was very enthusiastic about music. He appreciated Western and Hindustani classical and modern music. He also had a passion for listening to the radio and often indulged in photography.

After his death, his wife, Sonia Gandhi came out with the book “Rajiv’s World: Photographs by Rajiv Gandhi”. The book has photographs clicked by Rajiv over four decades and spans categories such as nature, wildlife and portraits.

After completing his A-levels in London, Rajiv Gandhi studied engineering at Trinity College in Cambridge. However, after studying there for three years, he did not obtain a degree. He then went on to study mechanical engineering at Imperial College London but did not complete his studies there either.

In 1981, just a year after he made his debut into the realm of politics, Rajiv Gandhi was made the president of the Indian Youth Congress, the younger congress faction.

Rajiv Gandhi was given the title of Mr Clean upon his entry into politics as his lack of prior association with the sector had left his image so untarnished that the opposition could seldom find something about him to criticise.

Rajiv Gandhi was the last member of the renowned Nehru-Gandhi family to hold the position of prime minister in India.

This visionary leader received the Bharat Ratna in 1955. These are some of his inspirational quotes and positive messages that will make you appreciate every aspect of life.

As India pays tribute to the country’s first and oldest prime minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, recalling his contribution to the nation, few know that he was home-schooled till he turned 15, where he received most of his primary education before going abroad for studies and returned to India in 1912.

Nehru was born in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh on November 14, 1889, and took his last breath from the land on May 27, 1964.

After an active role in the country’s fight for freedom, he became Prime Minister of India on August 15, 1947. He received 11 nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize for keeping peace within the Indian Subcontinent from 1950 to 1955. The first attempt to assassinate him was made during the partition of India, and then three more times in 1955, 1956 and 1961.

He played an important role in making India a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic. He was also a very prolific English writer, author of many books, including The Discovery of India, Glimpses of World History, and his autobiography Toward Freedom.

Nehru founded universities including IIT, AIIMS and IIM, included free and compulsory primary education for all children in his five-year plan, launched heavy industry, and laid the foundation for creating the National Defence Academy and Atomic Energy Commission and started the non-aligned movement.

Served as Prime Minister for 18 years, initially in an interim capacity and then from 1950 as Prime Minister.

This visionary leader received the Bharat Ratna in 1955. These are some of his inspirational quotes and positive messages that will make you appreciate every aspect of life:

1. “We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures that we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.”

2. “Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit.”

3. “The art of a people is a true mirror to their minds.”

4. “A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new; when an age ends; and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance.”

5. “The only alternative to coexistence is co-destruction.”

6. “The forces in a capitalist society, if left unchecked, tend to make the rich richer and the poor poorer.”

7. “Loyal and efficient work in a great cause, even though it may not be immediately recognised, ultimately bears fruit.”

8. “It is science alone that can solve the problems of hunger and poverty, of insanitation and illiteracy, of superstition and deadening of custom and tradition, of vast resources running to waste, or a rich country inhabited by starving poor… Who indeed could afford to ignore science today? At every turn we have to seek its aid… The future belongs to science and those who make friends with science.”

9. “Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom.”

10. “Failure comes only when we forget our ideals and objectives and principles.”
11. “Without peace, all other dreams vanish and are reduced to ashes.”

12. “Democracy and socialism are means to an end, not the end itself.”

13. “There is perhaps nothing so bad and so dangerous in life as fear.”

14. “Let us be a little humble; let us think that the truth may not perhaps be entirely with us.”

15. “Evil unchecked grows, evil tolerated poisons the whole system.”

His health began declining in the early 1960s, and he passed away on May 27, 1964. Jawaharlal Nehru’s death was announced to the Parliament in words similar to Nehru’s own at the time of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination: “The light is out.”

He misses the adrenaline rush that his movie releases bring to him. His latest venture “Sooryavanshi” was about to hit the theatres before the lockdown was imposed all over the country. In an online interaction according to TOI, he said ” “For the first time, I have been at home in my entire career for so long”, he later talked about how he has utilized this time to bond with his family by playing games or watching baking shows with his wife. He also recalled his childhood where he used to skip lunches with his family to go and watch the movie in the theatre as an audience.

Always grateful to his fans for all the love they have showered on him, the actor was recently in the news when his admirers demanded a Bharat Ratna for him along with Sonu Sood for the exemplory work they have done in helping the needy during this lockdown.
