Distilled spirits, or spirits with a high alcohol-by-volume (ABV) level, are often the most calorically dense of all alcoholic beverages....

Distilled spirits, or spirits with a high alcohol-by-volume (ABV) level, are often the most calorically dense of all alcoholic beverages. This is because distilled spirits contain more alcohol per serving than beer or wine, and alcohol is calorie-dense.

Here are some examples of common distilled spirits and their approximate calorie content per standard serving (1.5 ounces):

Vodka:

Approximately 97 calories per 1.5-ounce serving.

Whiskey:

Approximately 105 calories per 1.5-ounce serving.

Rum:

Approximately 97 calories per 1.5-ounce serving.

Gin:

Approximately 97 calories per 1.5-ounce serving.

Tequila:

Approximately 97 calories per 1.5-ounce serving.

It’s crucial to note that the calorie count of distilled spirits varies based on the brand, flavourings, and additional mixers.

Furthermore, cocktails created with distilled spirits frequently include extra calories from mixers such as sweet syrups, sodas, or fruit juices, which can dramatically raise the overall calorie count.

While distilled spirits have greater calorie counts per serving than beer or wine, it’s important to consider the full context of your food and lifestyle when making alcohol consumption decisions.

Moderation and mindful drinking practices are essential for maintaining a balanced diet and reducing the influence of alcohol on your health and well-being.

Dutch beer brewing brand Heineken announced on 10th February 2021 that it will cut almost around 8,000 jobs worldwide due...

Dutch beer brewing brand Heineken announced on 10th February 2021 that it will cut almost around 8,000 jobs worldwide due to the Coronavirus pandemic induced net loss of 204 million euros ($247 million) in 2020.

Heineken Holding N.V’s 2020 reports show a decline of 11.3% in revenue at 23,770 million euros, 11.9% in net revenue at 19,715 million euros and 35.6% at 2,421 million euros in operating profit. The net loss fell by 109.4% and net profit reduced by 49.4% to 1,154 million euros.

Overall Heineken expects revenue, operating profit and operating profit margin to remain below the level of 2019.

Dolf van den Brink, Chairman of the Executive Board of Heineken commented, “In a year of unprecedented disruption and transition, our teams rose to the occasion and quickly adapted while not losing sight of the need to continue investing for the future. The impact of the pandemic on our business was amplified by our on-trade and geographic exposure. We took diligent cost mitigation actions balanced with continued investment behind our growth platforms. We gained share in most of our key operations, a testimony to our ability to adapt and stay close to our customers and consumers in these turbulent times.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic and governments’ measures continue to have a material impact on our markets and business,” Heineken said in a 2021 outlook statement along with its results for the last year.

“According to the World Health Organisation, the effect of vaccines on the pandemic will depend on several factors including their effectiveness, speed of their approval, manufacturing and delivery and the number of people getting vaccinated. As such, we expect the pandemic to continue to impact our business in the first half of 2021 and market conditions to gradually improve in the second part of the year” said Heineken in its statement.

The company also anticipates:

An average effective interest rate broadly in line with 2020 (3.0%)

Capital expenditure related to property, plant and equipment and intangible assets of around 1.8 billion euros in comparison to 1.6 billion euros in 2020.

The effective tax rate may stay above 2019 level because of the effect of fixed cost components in the tax line.

Today, Kirin Holdings the Japanese beer brewers announced to invest $30 million in New Delhi based B9 Beverages, manufacturers of popular Bira 91. The company seeks to secure a spot in India’s growing craft beer market amid falling sales at home.

As reported by Reuters, a Kirin spokesman and Bira CEO Ankur Jain said, that the Japanese brewer will acquire a stake of under 10% in B9. They declined to give further financial details.

B9 Beverages had been in talks with international brewers and other investors to sell a stake of up to 20% in the company, Reuters reported in the month of August.

Bira was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and have reported losses in recent years, the investment will hence allow the independent brewing company to break even in the fiscal year 2021-22, Ankur Jain told Reuters.

“The companies will be exploring business synergies,” Jain said, adding that the investment would allow Bira to accelerate plans to launch its products in Japan later this year.

Jain added that he expects the deal to be closed over “the next few days” and that talks were also underway with a view to selling a further 10% stake in Bira to financial investors.

Bira launched in the year 2015 holds around 5-10% share of the beer market in cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Kirin meanwhile has historically shown interest in independent breweries and owns a minority stake in New York’s Brooklyn Brewery.

PitchBook an independent data provider reported that Bira was valued at USD 210 million in 2018. US-based Sequoia Capital holds a roughly 45% stake in the company, while CEO Ankur Jain and his family own around 30%.

Craft beer sales are on the rise in India as younger, affluent consumers in big cities choose brands and pubs that make lighter brews and promise fresher ingredients.
