“This is not something new, everything is being opposed, including the Women’s Reservation Bill. When Article 370 was revoked, they opposed it; when the Ram Temple was built, they opposed it; when CAA was introduced, they opposed it; when triple talaq was abolished, they opposed it; when GST was implemented, they opposed it; when Ayushman Bharat was launched, they opposed it; when the new Parliament building was constructed, they opposed it; efforts to curb Naxalism were opposed; strong action against terrorism was opposed; surgical strikes were opposed; air strikes were opposed; even Operation Sindoor was opposed.”

He further added that, in his view, opposition parties have taken a fixed stance against the government’s actions.

“It seems they have made up their mind to oppose whatever Narendra Modi does, without considering whether it is good or bad.”

The remarks were made in the context of ongoing parliamentary discussions, where political differences between the ruling government and opposition benches have been prominently visible. Shah’s comments referenced a wide range of legislative, security, and welfare initiatives undertaken in recent years.

Indian films, particularly Bollywood films, have a large fan base in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries of Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The action political thriller film ‘Article 370’, starring Yami Gautam, has been banned in all Gulf countries. While ‘Article 370’ has been a huge success at the domestic and international box office, earning praise from both audiences and critics, the ban in the Gulf is another setback for the Hindi film industry, as it denies audiences in the region the opportunity to see an Indian cinematic offering that has been widely praised.

Over the years, however, numerous Indian films have been prohibited from being released in the Gulf region. Here are such films and the reasons for their suspension.

Article 370

The film primarily explores universal human experiences within the framework of a complex socio-political landscape. Beast

Vijay played the lead in Nelson Dilipkumar’s 2022 film Beast, which also stars Pooja Hegde. Weeks before its global premiere, the spy action thriller, initially made in Tamil, was prohibited in Gulf countries such as Qatar and Kuwait. The Beast was purportedly banned for depicting Pakistan and terrorism in the film.

Bell Bottom

Rajeev M. Tewari’s 2021 film Bell Bottom, which stars Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, and Vaani Kapoor, is inspired by the hijacking of Indian aircraft by Khalistani terrorists. The makers were accused of falsifying historical facts, which resulted in its suspension in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar. Bell Bottom did moderate business at the box office.

The Kashmir Files

The Kashmir Files, a controversial film by filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri, was also banned in the Gulf region. Countries such as Kuwait chose not to distribute the film, while the UAE removed its ban a few weeks after its debut. The film, starring Anupam Kher, is based on the flight of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley in the early 1990s.

Kurup

Srinath Rajendra’s Malayalam film Kurup is a biopic of fugitive Sukumara Kurup’s life. In the 2021 film, Dulquer Salmaan played the title role. Despite its commercial and critical success, the picture was forbidden from being released in Kuwait. The reason for the ban is said to be that it depicted an Indian fugitive seeking sanctuary in a GCC country.

She continues, “If someone is making me uncomfortable, I’ve got all the right to excuse myself. It’s a very special time, and it should be enjoyed in the best possible way. Jammu and Kashmir’s police successfully apprehend terrorist behind brutal killing of Punjabi labourers

On Tuesday, the Jammu and Kashmir police declared that they had successfully captured Adil Manzoor Langoo, the terrorist who killed two Punjabi labourers brutally on February 7 in the Habba Kadal neighbourhood of Srinagar.

Additional Director General of Police Vijay Kumar confirmed the arrest by stating that the terrorist opened fire on the two labourers residing in the Habba Kadal area, Punjab on February 7. Amritpal Singh and Rohit Masih, two woodworkers, were shot at their house in the Shahed Gunj neighbourhood of Shalla Kadal.

Amritpal Singh passed right away, and Rohit Masih survived an initial medical emergency but eventually passed away from his wounds. Both were from Punjab’s Amritsar district and had been working in Jammu & Kashmir to help their destitute families.

As per the Additional Director General of Police, the police have effectively retrieved the firearm that was utilised in the incident.

Based on the inquiry, it was determined that handlers in Pakistan had used social media to influence and recruit Adil Manzoor Langoo into the terrorist community. This new information illuminates the ongoing outside factors fueling violence in the area.

Jammu and Kashmir have been facing violent incidents against non-locals since 2019. This is due to the Union government’s decision to repeal Article 370, which gave the state special status. The terrorist attack that took place in Shahed Gunj is the first known instance of violence against foreigners in Jammu and Kashmir this year.

According to the police report, “A worker in the Tumchi Nowpora region of Pulwama was shot by terrorists; the man eventually died from his wounds. Area marked off with tape.”

SC upholds Govt’s decision to scrap Article 370

New Delhi, Dec 11 : Over four years after the Modi government revoked Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, the Supreme Court on Monday upheld the decision in a landmark judgement, saying the Union Territory does not have any “sovereignty” different from other states of the country.

The 5-member Constitution Bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice of India Justice D Y Chandrachud, said Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was a “temporary” feature and the President of India had the powers to abrogate it.

The Apex court, in a much-awaited ruling on a bunch of petitions, declared that there was no “mala fide” in the President’s action to abrogate Article 370 on August 5, 2019 and thus the challenge to the Presidential proclamation was not valid.

In a unanimous verdict, the Bench asserted that there was no need for any concurrence, thus rejecting the contention by some sections that the “consent” of the people of Jammu and Kashmir should have been taken before the central government removed the controversial article.

The judgement, read out by the Chief Justice, also made it clear that the recommendations of Jammu and Kashmir Constituent Assembly, which was in vogue till late 1950s, were not binding on the President.

It also said that the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir ceased to exist after the Presidential proclamation of August 2019.

The Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir “is declared to have become redundant,” said the Bench, which also included Justice Sanjay Krishan Kaul, Justice Sanjeev Khanna, Justice B R Gavai and Justice Surya Kant.

The top court also upheld the August 2019 decision of the central government to divide Jammu and Kashmir, carving out a separate Union Territory of Ladakh.

It also directed restoration of the Statehood of Jammu and Kashmir at the earliest to reverse the decision of August 5, 2019 under which it was converted into a Union Territory.

The Court also directed the Election Commission to hold the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024.

Chief Justice Chandrachud, while reading out the judgement, said J&K does not retain any element of sovereignty after the Instrument of Accession was signed by the Maharaja of the then princely state on October 26, 1947.

When the Constituent Assembly was dissolved, only the transitory powers of the assembly ceased to exist and there was no restriction on the Presidential order, the judgement said.

Justice Kaul recommended the constitution of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, on the lines of the body that had been formed in South Africa, to investigate human rights violations by both state and non-state actors in J&K.

“In view of the inroads made globally and indigenous requests for truth and reconciliation commissions, I recommend the setting up of an impartial truth and conciliation commission. The commission will investigate and report on the violation of human rights by both state and non-state actors perpetrated in J&K at least since the 1980s and recommend measures for reconciliation,” Justice Kaul said, suggesting that the commission be set up in a time-bound manner.

Adding what he called a “sentimental epilogue” at the end of his opinion, Justice Kaul said the Kashmir Valley carried a historical burden and had some social context that could not be segregated regarding the evolving constitutional status of the region. “We, the people of Jammu and Kashmir, are at the heart of the debate,” Justice Kaul said.

He said a series of events led to the migration of a part of the state population between 1989 and 1990.“It was not a voluntary migration. The situation became so aggregated that the very integrity and sovereignty of our country were endangered, and the army had to be called in,” he said.

Referring to the youth of the valley, he said “There is already an entire generation of youth that has grown up with a feeling of distrust, and it is to them that we owe the greatest of reparations.”

Emphasising the importance of the commission, he said “It is my sincere hope that much will be achieved when Kashmir opens up its heart to embracing the past and facilitating the people who were compelled to migrate to come back with dignity. Whatever has been, has been but the future is ours to see.”

The Supreme Court not only upheld the Centre’s decision to abrogate Article 370 but also emphasised the need to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood as early as possible, calling for elections by September 30 next year. The five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice Chandrachud, also affirmed the validity of creating the union territory of Ladakh.

Petitioners, opposing the repeal of Article 370, argued that the provision couldn’t be scrapped since the Jammu and Kashmir Constituent Assembly’s term, whose approval was necessary, had ended in 1957 after drafting the state’s Constitution.

They contended that with the constituent assembly extinct, Article 370 had acquired permanent status. The Center, however, argued that its choices were compliant with the law, mainstreaming Jammu and Kashmir while lowering terrorism and levelling the playing field.

More than a year after the PDP-BJP coalition government fell, Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two Union Territories as a result of Article 370 being revoked.

The Indian Supreme Court is currently hearing cases that challenge the revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This is the twelfth day of the hearing. On Monday, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stated that the now-repealed Article 35A had deprived Jammu and Kashmir residents of all privileges.

On Tuesday, the Indian government informed the Supreme Court that the union territory status of Jammu and Kashmir is not permanent. “The union territory status of Jammu and Kashmir is not permanent. As for Ladakh, its UT status will remain for some time,” Mehta said.

Here are the key points from the Article 370 hearing in the Supreme Court:

On Tuesday, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it will make a detailed statement on the contentious political issue in court on August 31.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta conveyed the central government’s response to the court after a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud asked it to establish a specific timeframe for restoring electoral democracy in the former state.
The top government law officer stated that he will make a detailed statement on the future of the union territory status of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh before the bench, which also includes Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant, on August 31.
The bench, which was hearing Mehta’s arguments in defense of the Centre’s decision to abolish the former state’s special status and reorganize it, stated, “Democracy is important, although we agree that in light of the national security situation, reorganization of the state can be done.”
However, the court stated that a lack of electoral democracy cannot be allowed to continue indefinitely.

“This must come to an end… give us a specific timeframe for when you will restore actual democracy. We want to record this,” said the bench, and asked Mehta and Attorney General R Venkataramani to seek instructions from the political executive and report back to the court.

In 2019, Union Home Minister Amit Shah proposed that Articles 370 and 35A be repealed. Then-President Ram Nath Kovind issued an order, the Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order 2019, stating that the provisions of the Indian Constitution would henceforth apply to Jammu and Kashmir, which experts say brought the northern state ‘on par’ with other Indian states.
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti was placed under preventive house arrest in 2019 along with other PDP leaders. A lockdown-like situation was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir as tensions erupted in the state, with residents protesting against the decision.
During hearings on petitions challenging the revocation of Article 370, there was a call to remove Article 35A. On Monday, CJI Chandrachud noted that ‘35A took away three fundamental rights.’

A two-judge Bench headed by Chief Justice N V Ramana and also comprising Justice Hima Kohli gave the ruling. Chief Justice Ramana said the matter has to be listed before a five-judge Bench. As some judges in the original bench which was hearing the case have retired. The petitions were mentioned by senior lawyers Shekhar Naphade. And P Chidambaram, who sought and wanted its direction that the matter be listed next week for an hearing. But Chief Justice Ramana said the matter will be heard in July.

A blast about 8 km away from Jammu’s Palli village was heard where PM Modi was scheduled to hold a rally on Sunday. On Tuesday, the CM of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath said that it would impose the population control law “at the right time.” In July, the government revealed a policy that strives to stabilise the population in Uttar Pradesh and decrease maternal and infant deaths, with Adityanath terming the rising population a “hurdle in development.”

“Everything is done at an appropriate time. The media earlier used to question the BJP on when it would announce a date for the Ram temple’s construction, but the prime minister (Narendra Modi), despite the COVID-19 pandemic, laid the foundation stone of the temple in Ayodhya on August 5th last year, and all need to be happy now,” Adityanath said at a conclave.

“Similarly, Article 370 was also scrapped by the prime minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah,” he said. On August 5th, 2019, the Centre had repealed Article 370, which gave erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir special status and bifurcated it into union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

At the News 24 conference, when asked to comment about his recent ”abba jaan” remark, the CM said, ”They (opposition) want the vote of Muslims but are getting irritated with abba jaan.” In Kushinagar, Adityanath, in a clear strike against the Samajwadi Party, said people who say “abba jaan” used to absorb all the ration earlier.

About the population law for Uttar Pradesh, the chief minister said, “Everything has a right time and has to be done at the right place. When the population law is brought, it will be done with fanfare, in the knowledge of the media as we do not believe in doing anything silently,” Adityanath said.

In July, a draft law on population control was posted on the website of the Uttar Pradesh Law Commission, welcoming recommendations from the people till the 19th of the month. The law states that people raising more than two children in Uttar Pradesh will be barred from standing for local bodies polls, applying for government jobs, or obtaining any subsidy.

The draft proposal also seeks to obstruct promotions in government jobs for such people while granting incentives to those abiding by the population law. The law commission said the draft bill had been handed over to the government.

BJP leader Javeed Ahmad Dar shot dead by terrorists in J&K’s Kulgam

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Javeed Ahmad Dar, the former constituency President of Homshalibugh in Kulgam, was reportedly shot dead by terrorists near the Brazloo-jagir area earlier on August 17.

As per the latest, the aggressor fired upon Javeed Ahmad Dar near his apartment in Brazloo Jageer of the south Kashmir region at nearly 4.30 pm.

Security forces have cordoned off the area and a hunt has been launched to nab the militants, officials said.

Castigating the incident, Manzoor Ahmad, BJP Media cell head, Kashmir, averred: “The BJP condemns the killing of Javeed Ahmad Dar, Constituency President, Homshalibugh in Kulgam by terrorists. The killing of Javeed Dar by terrorists in Kulgam is a shameful and cowardly act. My deepest condolences to the bereaved family. I pray for courage to the family to bear the irreparable loss.”

The then Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also castigated the alleged killing of the BJP leader and added that: “Terrible news from Kulgam. Javeed Ahmed was gunned down in cold blood. I unreservedly condemn this terror attack and send my heartfelt condolences to Javeed’s family and colleagues. May Allah grant him a place in Jannat.”

Strikingly, at least 20 BJP workers have been killed since the arrival of the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Many BJP leaders in the Kashmir area have been designated under the ‘protected persons’ slot and are kept in safe houses and hotels with stringent protection.

Government schools in Jammu & Kashmir to be renamed after martyrs

Earlier this week, the government of India issued a notice initiating the renaming of all the government schools in Jammu and Kashmir, to honour and give tribunal to the martyr soldiers and officials of the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police and the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Further, the state authorities concerned were notified to formulate a committee at the district sector to implement the formalities due for the process and initiate orders for the honourable course of action. The representatives from different committees such as the Indian Army, the SSP, ADC, DPO, or AC Panchayat are assessed to join in. The optimum list is to be submitted by the Deputy commissioners by the 5 of August.

The deputy commissioners of the various district were asked to locate the public residencies and schools under government care. Which are under the administration of the respective officials, to attain the entitlement of the heroes who were led to “veergati”.

The districts included: Jammu, Kathua, Doda, Poonch, Ramban, Samba, Kishtwar, Rajouri, Udhampur, and Reasi.

In a recent tweet, the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated, “ Since the revocation of Article 370 the union territory has undergone real democracy, development and governance in the last two years.”
He further showed appreciation towards the PMO, by saying that PMO’S decision has led to boost India’s unity and integrity.

Recently, 17 state-run schools of Punjab were also to be renamed after the freedom fighters. The schools were named in the district of Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Hoshiarpur, SBS Nagar, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, SAS Nagar and Fatehgarh Sahib.

On Thursday, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, had said that since two years ago when the abrogation of Article 370 occurred, there had been unprecedented peace and progress in Jammu and Kashmir.

PM Modi had said that two years ago today the first big step was taken towards a new Jammu and Kashmir. He also said this on the second anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370.

Article 370 had given Jammu and Kashmir the special status and the bifurcation of the former state into two different Union territories.

The official Twitter account of Narendra Modi tweeted that it was a historic day today, as two years ago on the same day, a big first step had been taken towards a new Jammu and Kashmir, and since then, there had been unmatched peace and progress in the region of Jammu and Kashmir. In the tweet, PM Modi had asked the public to head to the “Your Voice” section of the Volunteer Module on the NaMo App for other informative content, graphics, and more.

In August 2019, the Centre had abrogated Article 370 and bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.

Mehbooba Mufti would not contest in elections

Mehbooba Mufti, Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Part Chief, said that she was not surprised when the PM, Narendra Modi, called a meeting on Thursday of the political leaders of Jammu and Kashmir. She said that there had been so much of oppression in the region that the centre must have realised that the things were not going the way they had planned.

Mehbooba Mufti’s comments came a day after when Prime Minister held the meeting with top political leaders of J&K at his Delhi residence.

After the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019 and the bifurcation of J&K into two union territories, this was the first meeting held between the centre and the political leaders of J&K. Mehbooba Mufti wasn’t able to answer as to why she was invited to the PM meet even though she was blamed for being the terror sympathiser. She said that only the PM or Home Minister could tell the reason for her being a part of the meeting.

She mentioned that there had been so much of oppression in J&K that people were unable to breathe, the situation on ground was not what they were portraying to the world and people were unhappy and felt suffocated. She added that the centre might have decided the meet out of empathy for them, so they went out of respect of the office of the PM.

Mehbooba Mufti also said that the meeting was held in cordial atmosphere and the Prime Minister and Home Minister heard their points and now they can only hope that the PM meant when he said to reduce the space between their hearts.

She said that prior to the elections they need to take some confidence building measures as the confidence of people are shattered and there had been many suicides, and J&K had been a region of total depression.

She said that the terrorism has come down but there was still disquiet in the region, and since the day Article 370 and 35A had been scrapped, the people feared that the demographic might change, she added that the jobs must be secured for local youths. She pointed out that the journalists got notices for their reporting resulting in reporters to not report freely, the Security force harassed the people, and unless the Article 370 and 35 A were restored, she would not contest in the elections.

Mehbooba Mufti said that she would not contest in the elections until the Article 370 and 35A were restored because otherwise the people would feel that the resolution of Article 370 was just a slogan and she was doing it for the politics, which was not the case hence she would not contest, she added that for the confidence build measures, they need to release the prisoners apart from the party leaders and the confident rebuilding measures should be taken up.

She said that the Article 370 and 35A were the means for them to have a job security and their identity from J&K, and it was important to them and called J&K the most prosperous state of India. She concluded saying that she agreed that the step to reach out to them by PM and inviting them to Delhi was a welcome measure.

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Saturday said revoking Article 370 and reducing the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir was an extremely sad decision and the Congress Party will relook into this issue.

Speaking in Club House chat, Digvijaya Singh said, “Democracy was not there in Kashmir. When they revoked Article 370 then Insaniyat was not there in Kashmir because they had put everyone behind bars: Kashmiriyat is something that is basically the fundamentals of secularism. Because in a Muslim majority state, there was a Hindu Raja and both were together. Kashmiri Pundits were given Reservations in Kashmir in government services. So, therefore, Kashmir is an extremely sad decision. And the Congress Party would certainly have to have a relook into this issue.”

Following the Congress leader’s remark, BJP IT cell in-charge Amit Malviya alleged that Digvijaya’s statement goes along the line of Pakistan.”In a Club House chat, Rahul Gandhi’s top aide Digvijaya Singh tells a Pakistani Journalist that if Congress comes to power they will reconsider the decision of abrogating Article 370… really? This is what Pakistan wants…”

On August 5, 2019, a little over two months into a historic second term, the Modi government divided Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories and did away with its special status.

Article 370, combined with Article 35A, accorded Jammu and Kashmir special status under the Constitution of India, allowing it to have a separate constitution and a separate penal code among other legal distinctions.

The decision to end the special status for J & K marked the fulfilment of BJP’s long-standing agenda and its 2014 poll manifesto promise.
