Arnab Goswami and ex-CEO BARC Partho Dasgupta caused Rs 431 cr loss to Times Now: Cops on TRP scam

Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami in collusion with Partho Dasgupta, the former CEO, BARC, had exploited TRPs of Times Now channel between June 2017 and March 2018 causing a loss of Rs 431 crore to the organization, said in chargesheet filed by Mumbai Police on Tuesday.

The CBI had registered this case on October 6, 2020, after BARC lodged a complaint that certain channels were contriving TRPs through illegal means. BARC installed 2,000 barometers in households in Mumbai to monitor TRPs in a top-secret and sensitive manner.

However, money was paid to households to keep their TV sets turned on to certain channels and shows to contrive the ratings, for which the funds were provided by The Republic Media owner and a well known anchor of India, Arnab Goswami, the chargesheet said.

Earlier, Mumbai police had said that Times Now was the leading news channel in TRP rankings, but within a week after Republic TV was launched in 2017. BARC officials had connived and brought down Times Now to number 2 position and CNN-18 was positioned from number two to third rank. The chargesheet also said that Arnab Goswami paid Partho Dasgupta huge sum and the latter bought expensive items including gold and silver jewellery from the funds he received for his involvement in the manipulation, stated in the chargesheet.

In chargesheet, it is stated that Arnab Goswami was the member of the various WhatsApp Groups used for the company’s work and the chats on some of them revealed the discussions on TRP manipulation. Later, while police questioned Goswami, he accepted that the chat with Dasgupta is correct and he chatted with Partho Dasgupta over WhatsApp.

The chargesheet also tells that the accused used Dual LCN – getting one channel on multiple frequencies by multi-system operators and the cable operators and manipulated the channel viewership data received at BARC. Due to this TRPs of The Republic Media Network had risen.

Then today, Kangana replied back to Rohit Sharma and mentioned him ‘dhobi ka kutta’ indirectly on Twitter, she replied, “Why all these cricketers sounding like dhobi ka kutta na ghar ka na ghat ka, why would farmers be against laws which are revolutionary for their well being. These are terrorists who are causing ruckus … say that na itna darr lagta hai ?”

Indian actress Tapsee Pannu also tweeted on this issue yesterday, she wrote, “If one tweet rattles your unity, one joke rattles your faith or one show rattles your religious belief then it’s you who has to work on strengthening your value system not become ‘propaganda teacher’ for others.”

Then Kangana Ranaut did a series of Tweets to reply back Tapsee, first she replied “Teri maa ko main gali doon it will rattle your belief dumbo? National platforms pe uska apman karu… I know you will strengthen your love not do anything tabhi toh tere jaise dusaron ki rotiyon pe palne wale paltu hote hain…kabhi kuch aur nahin ban pate, chup kar aab.”

Kangana further replied, “B grade logon ki B grade thinking (B grade people have a B grade mentality), one should stand up for one’s faith motherland and family, yehi Karm hai yehi Dharm bhi hai (this is our duty) …. free fund ka sirf khane wale mat bano (don’t be a freeloader)… iss desh ka bojh (don’t be a burden on this country)… that’s why I call them B grade … ignore them free loaders …”

Kangana did another tweet to reply Tapsee, she wrote, “Yeh her only achievement is it be a sasti copy (cheap copy)…. since she styled herself like me people started noticing her, librus r happy to find not just sasti also atrocious, ugly and more than willing to be anti national as well, Never saw such a wannabe,desperate and clueless moron…”

Then Kangana Ranaut did another tweet mentioning news anchor Arnab Goswami, she wrote, “Anti nationals have been exposed and now are trying their best to divert the matter, hang in their I am doing an interview with Arnab Goswami today exposing these rats layer by layer hahaha ha.”

Now Twitter has deleted all these tweets, as they violate regulations. If we try open these tweets, the website shows “This Tweet is no longer available because it violated the Twitter Rules.”

According to a list of Top 10 best Bollywood publicity magnets published on the Bollywood Publicity website, Indian actor Sushant Singh Rajput is at the eighth position even after his demise a year ago.

The actor, who left the entire nation in shock with the news of his suicide, was found hanging at his residence in June 2020. Since then, his personal as well as professional life has attracted a lot of public and media attention.

Talking about his continued popularity even after death, the website wrote, “Widely appraised for his acting skills, Sushant Singh Rajput’s death attracted a lot of media attention. Mumbai’s Bandra boy Salman Khan has beaten popular film celebrities Ranveer Singh and Kangana Ranaut in the list of Top 10 best Bollywood publicity magnets featured on the website Bollywood Publicity.

The famous ‘Bhai’ of the Indian entertainment industry continues to stand strong even after thirty years in Bollywood. Even though Kangana is called the ‘Queen of Controversies’ when it comes to Bollywood publicity, she couldn’t beat the media and public attention received by Salman.

Trailing behind Kangana, Ranveer managed to make it to the third position, owing to his funky dressing sense and some wonderful movie performances.

Soon after the purported messages between Republic TV CEO, aka Editor-In-Chief Arnab Goswami and Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) Ex-CEO Partho Dasgupta were leaked on Twitter, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan angrily reacted over reports about Goswami having the knowledge about Balakot surgical strike in 2019.

The Pakistan PM took to Twitter on Monday to respond to reports by the Indian media. The purported texts three days before the airstrike indicate Goswami had prior knowledge of the attack and it was designed to drum up support for Modi in his re-election bid in pending parliamentary elections. Khan had alleged about the same in a speech at the U.N. in 2019.

According to the WhatsApp transcript, Goswami texted Dasgupta three days before the February 26, 2019 airstrike, saying “something big will happen and on Pakistan, the government is confident of striking in a way that people will be elated.”

Dasgupta responded by saying that “the attack on Pakistan would give Modi a sweeping majority” in the upcoming general elections.

The transcripts of the purported texts were filed by the Mumbai Police in relation to the TRP scam case. However, the text exchange raised some serious questions against the ruling party concerning national security by the Opposition

The TRP scam came in light in the month of October last year when a complaint was registered against certain TV channels, which includes Republic TV, alleging about rigging their Television Rating Points (TRP).

BARC measures viewership of the TV channels which shows the percentage of people viewing the programme. This helps advertisers favour a particular channel as a higher TRP suggests a bigger audience.

The Mumbai Police alleges that the former BARC CEO misused his position to conspire with Arnab Goswami to manipulate the TRP ratings and bring Republic TV to the number 1 position by accepting a hefty sum of money since 2017.

The Mumbai Police crime branch is probing the role of Republic TV, Fakt Marathi, Box Cinema, News Nation, Mahamovies and Wow music channel for inflating viewership figures. The channels are accused of paying money to households where barometers were installed for keeping the channels on.

SC grants interim bail to Arnab Goswami

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court granted the release of Arnab Goswami and other co-accused on interim bail in an abetment to suicide case. The high court said there was an error in rejecting the application for grant of interim bail of Goswami, and the high court was not doing enough in matters where personal liberty is denied. If a constitutional court remains blind then “we are traveling on the path of destruction undeniably.”

Justice D Y Chandrachud said, “SC is unhappy that HCs, which are constitutional courts, are not doing enough in matters where personal liberty is denied. If this court were not to interfere today, we are traveling on a path of destruction of personal liberty undeniably….Is this is what out state governments will do to those who have to be nailed….? Don’t watch the channel if you don’t like….Left to myself, I will not watch….If state govt’s target individual in this manner, let’s send out a message that SC is there.”

It was a two-bench hearing. It was chaired by Justice Chandrachud and Indira Banerjee. They made the observations while hearing Goswami’s plea challenging the Bombay HC order.

Arnab Goswami arrested by Mumbai Police, news anchor reveals he was assaulted and his son beaten up

After numerous FIRs against Republic TV journalist and Chief Editor, Arnab Goswami, being filed, he has been finally arrested by the Mumbai Police. On Wednesday morning, i.e. 4th November, the Raigad unit of Mumbai Police raided the Worli residence of the owner of Republic TV and has reportedly arrested Arnab Goswami in an Abetment to Suicide case of a 53-year old interior designer, Anvay Naik and his mother, Kumud Naik.

A senior Police officer, Sachin Vaze, reported that Goswami has been arrested in relation to abetment to suicide case of 2018, which has been reopened now. It was also confirmed by another police officer that Arnab Goswami has been taken to Alibaug. It was also reported that the family members of the Editor protested against the arrest when a team of officers went ahead to arrest him. During the raid, a team of Crime branch, as well as CID, was also present at the spot.

The channel, in the defence of its Chief Editor, called out the arrest to be “a move for parading the editor of a top Indian news channel like a criminal, pulled by the hair, threatened, not allowed to drink water.” However, Arnab was able to speak to the media personnel from the vehicle he was kept in and he said that he was assaulted and his son was beaten by the police. Whilst all this was happening, Goswami’s colleagues made direct “emotional” appeal to the Supreme Court for justice.

On 12th October, it was reported that leading production houses of Bollywood, as well as 4 film industry associations along with various celebrities such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Taapsee Pannu, have filed a case of defamation against two Indian Television news and their reporters namely Republic TV and its journalists, Arnab Goswami and Pradeep Bhandari, and Times Now and Rahul Shivshankar and Navika Kumar of the same.

In the lawsuit filed against the two, Bollywood celebrities and filmmakers, producers such as Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Karan Johar, Ajay Devgn, YRF has alleged the channels of using derogatory terms for Bollywood such as “filth”, “scum” and “druggies”, as well as statements such as “All the perfumes of Arabia cannot take away the stench and the stink of this filth and scum of the underbelly of Bollywood”, “This is the dirtiest industry in the country”, and “Cocaine and LSD-drenched Bollywood”. All of these remarks and terms were used for the Hindi Film Industry during the investigation of Sushant Sing Rajput’s death and the drug probe which was revealed during the investigation of CBI.

Urmila Matondkar said that it was something that was necessary to be done. She said, “The lawsuit is a much-needed move. I am all for it.” On the other hand, senior actor Shatrugan Sinha spoke how it was wrong to defame the whole industry because of a few. He was quoted saying, “Every industry, every organization has its rotten apples. One can’t label the whole damn community as bad because of the few undesirable elements. On Thursday, journalist Arnab Goswami in his prime time debate show passed a comment on Arjun Kapoor which made the actor trend on social media. Arnab gave his take on BMC’s demolition drive at Kangana’s Bandra office within 24 hours of having served a notice, which was not right. The Republic TV chief went on discussing some old cases related to the claimed ‘illegal extension’ on properties held by some famous celebrities. Goswami referred to a list of other celebs who had faced the wrath of the BMC but nothing major happened with them, when compared to Kangana Ranaut, he said. Arnab Goswami is no more an unknown face to the nation. He has often come into the limelight because of his fearless way of talking and exposing people. Looking at his attitude and modalities, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma announced on Monday, that he will be making a film titled Arnab-The News Prostitute. Through a series of tweets, he called out journalist Arnab Goswami for his TV news debates on Bollywood post the demise of Sushant Singh Rajput. In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Ram Gopal Varma shared as to why he decided to make the film.

When asked about how he got the idea to make this film, Ram Gopal Varma said, “See, the point is, I happened to see a few shows on the ongoing Sushant Singh Rajput issue and I was shocked at the way he characterises Bollywood and making gross generalisation as if he knows the inside out of everybody in Bollywood sitting inside his Republic studio and he calls them rapist, murderers and what not. One thing I could not understand, in his head he is connecting the death of Divya Bharti, sometime in ‘95 or ‘94 like that, then Sridevi, then Jiah Khan, then of course Sushant. He makes it seem as if all of them are one case and the murderer is Bollywood.”

“Arnab would not hear anyone else’s opinion except his own opinion. He decided that there is something about Bollywood that is extremely wrong, bad, monstrous and he calls it dirtiest, rancid and all the names. I was pretty much upset and what really shocked me after he said Divya Bharti died and shame on Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. What has Salman and Shah Rukh got to do with Divya Bharti? In his tweets, he had also asked Bollywood biggies like Aditya Chopra and Karan Johar to speak up. Talking about the same, he said, “So I was shocked why Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra and all these big guys, why aren’t they saying anything. It is common sense that when this kind of allegation is coming from a premium channel of India your silence will seem to the public like you are accepting whatever he is talking about and I couldn’t take that at all. I will respond to something that is happening. I have always made realistic films. I take something from what’s happening and today the news media is a very very big part of people’s life. It is constantly feeding people in terms of information, it is making them take decisions, making them form opinions and all this is directed by some people. They might claim they just want to report, which is not how it happens, especially in the case of Arnab, because he will kind of hammer his opinion into your head as the truth. You know, I thought it is high time he needs to be exposed.”

“And the reason mainly I am doing that is because you can’t go to his show. If you go to his show, he does two things- whenever anyone says opposite to what he is saying he will shut his mouth and make a face and then he will send a signal to his viewers that this guy does not know what he is talking about or he is ‘bik chuka hai’ (a sellout) or he has joined hands with others and blah blah blah. There are some dirty tricks like cutting off the audio and things like that. So the only way I can probably do it is by making a kind of a docudrama where I kind of dissect exactly his modus operandi and way of operation,” he said talking about the reason for making the film.

The demise of ‘Dil Bechara’ actor created a lot of debates and also exposed the darker side of the Bollywood Industry. As various news channels has been holding on debates regarding Sushant Singh Rajput’s demise, Arnab Goswami the Editor in Chief of Republic TV is seen questioning a lot of people who were linked with the late actor.

Now, Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma took on Arnab Goswami and announced on his Twitter handle that he will be making a film on the news anchor. He expressed his anger towards Arnab in a series of tweets and explained he is going to make a movie on him. Varma tweeted, “Was shocked to see #ArnabGoswami talking about Bollywood in such a horrible way ..He calls it the dirtiest industry ever with criminal connections ,it’s full of Rapists, gangsters, sexual exploiters and what not?It beats me in what dumb way #ArnabGoswami can combine the deaths of Divya Bharthi,Jiah khan, Sridevi and Sushant into one case and claim that the murderer is Bollywood..incidentally the 4 deaths happened over a span of nearly 25 years.”

He further added, “And in all the four cases of Divya,Jiah,Sridevi and Sushant there were completely different people and circumstances ..But in Arnab’s mind they are all one and had been killed by an entity called Bollywood.”

Ram Gopal Varma further said, “That guy #ArnabGoswami is banking on the fact that we don’t have the spine and as long as he runs the debate he will anyway make sure no one’s point of view is ever heard and that’s his modus operandi anyway.”

He added, “I for one am feeling very strongly about this and I decided to make a film on #ArnabGoswami in which I will take the clothes off his facade and make him naked exposing the lengths and breadths of all his vital corrupt stats.”

Later, Ram Gopal announced the title of the movie based on Arnab Goswami. “ARNAB”THE NEWS PROSTITUTE. Varma went on talking about how he will expose Arnab and how he doesn’t care about his reaction to his tweets. He said, “Hey #ArnabGoswami whether u react to my film or not I don’t care a damn because my target audience is not going to be u , but it will be ur viewers ..I want to shake them up with the way I will expose in my film the back of ur public face in Republic TV.”
