Hurricane Sally makes landfall on Alabama’s Gulf Coast; poses risk of “life-threatening” flooding

Hurricane Sally made landfall on Alabama’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday morning as a Category 2 hurricane, spreading strong winds inland and toppling power lines across southeastern Alabama and western Florida.

Upon landfall, winds were clocked at 105 miles per hour able to cause extensive damage, according to the Saffir-Simpson scale.

The hurricane also poses the risk of “catastrophic and life-threatening” flooding along portions of the north-central Gulf Coast, the National Hurricane Center said in an advisory.

Videos posted on social media appeared to show some areas in the region had started to flood.

About 150,000 homes as well as businesses in Alabama and Florida were already without power on Tuesday evening.

A 29-year-old pedestrian identified as Johnarian Travez Allen was shot eight times in Union Springs, a small town in Bullock County.

He was shot dead as he was taking “too long” to cross the street. That’s the shocking motive found by Alabama police department as part of a homicide investigation.

Allen had gone to a store to buy foodstuff but as he was walking across the road, the shooter apparently drove up and felt he was not moving out of the roadway fast enough, police officials said.

The shooter has been identified as Jeremiah Wesley Penn (22). He is currently in the Bullock County Jail on a capital murder charge.
