Abhay Deol is in the news after his most recent web series, Trial By Fire, received a tonne of good publicity. In order to promote the show, he has been giving interviews. One in-depth interview he just had was with the tabloid Mid-Day. He talked extensively about Trial By Fire in an interview with the tabloid’s entertainment editor Mayank Shekhar, as well as his family, what it’s like to be both inside and outside society, his previous movies, and a lot more. Additionally, he dispelled the taboo around the accusations made by Anurag Kashyap almost two and a half years ago.

In an interview with Huffington Post in June 2020, Anurag Kashyap claimed that working with Abhay was “painfully difficult” and that he does not have great working memories with him. He said, “He wanted to do artistic movies but also wanted the mainstream benefits. The benefits and luxuries of being a ‘Deol’. He would stay in a five-star hotel while the entire crew stayed in Paharganj for a film that was made on a very tight budget. Also, the reason a lot of his directors went away from him.”

On this, Abhay Deol clarified that he never demanded a five-star hotel room. To quote Abhay, “Anurag went in public and told a lot of lies about me. One lie was that I demanded a [five-star] hotel room during the shoot of Dev D. He had come up to me and said, ‘Listen you can’t stay with us, you are a Deol. So, I want to put you up in a hotel room.’ He literally told me that. What he told the press was that I demanded it.”

Abhay then minced no words as he thundered, “I had my heart on my sleeve, and all that is great — but you get taken advantage of, and then you get reactive. So, he (Kashyap) was a good lesson for me. Then I just avoided him, because I don’t need toxic people in my life. Life is too short, and there is so much more to explore. But he (Kashyap) is definitely a liar and a toxic person. And I would warn people about him.”

Abhay Deol then revealed that after Anurag Kashyap “said that crap” about him, he sent him apology messages. Abhay stated, “He does that all the time. He was like, ‘You want to shout at me, scream at me…’ And I was like, ‘I don’t care. It’s been 12 years. You don’t feature in my thoughts even now; get over it.’ He said, ‘Forgive me because I have had a bad day.’ I said you are forgiven. I never had a personal agenda. It was far bigger than just me. That is how I feel about everything. How much of this is he going to do? And I would have never taken his name and said the things, had he not gone public either.”

Abhay Deol was asked with describing a few of the superstars in a rapid-fire round during an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama last year. He referred to Anurag Kashyap as a “gaslighter” when asked about him. Abhay continued by saying that he disliked self-promotion since he wanted his films to speak for themselves. After appearing in iconic Bollywood films such as Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and others, Abhay takes on the role of a father onscreen for the first time. When asked how he got to be a part of this endeavour, Deol said, “Well, I met Manjiri ‘Manjari Makijany’, the director 3-4 years ago. She was in LA and I half live in LA, so we met in a general meeting to say hello. Our families have worked together. You know, her dad was in the industry, Mr Mac Mohan has been a legend himself and so we just bonded over being from the same neighbourhood.”

“And three years later she calls me and says, ‘By the way, I’m doing a project for Disney and you have to play a dad'”, Abhay also mentioned that he was on board for the project after reading the script for the character.

We asked Deol if he is ready for an entirely new fan base to come his way, given that Disney films have a certain fan appeal, not just when it comes to playing the Prince, but also with roles like that of a Disney father. ZNMD clocks ten years, Katrina recalls being “terrified” during the reunion

The ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ actors got together on Thursday as the film clocks 10 years. Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Abhay Deol, and Katrina Kaif joined director Zoya Akhtar for a special digital reunion and narrated and read some iconic scenes and anecdotes from the film.

Katrina who essayed the role of ‘Laila’ revealed that she was “terrified” during the scuba diving scene where she played the trainer. She said, “I was terrified. Everyone else were semi-pro divers. When we were shooting that underwater sequence where Hrithik has that epiphany, what actually was happening was that I was digging my nails into his hand because I was so scared. It was my first diving experience, like that.”

Hrithik also talked about the scene and said, “The water was freezing, and I was protecting myself from the cold. So I was pretending to come out of it. The shot starts with me on the ladder of the boat. Finally, I said that’s what is making me hold back. I am not allowing myself to be impacted by the water. In the final take, I just went in. Zoya said, ‘Are you sure? The water is really cold!’ I froze. I came out, and it was exactly what that moment needed.”

Speaking about shooting the song ‘Ik Junoon’, Hrithik said, “I didn’t have tomatoes for three or four months. None of us could tolerate the presence of a tomato after (Ik Junoon) song. The kind of smell that we suffered.”

Hrithik once had mentioned to ETimes in an interview that he’d love to do another film like ZNMD. He said, “I would love to do another film like this where it’s with friends and it’s an ensemble. I remember when I signed this film on, a lot of my father’s friends were very concerned about me, out of sheer love for me. They thought I was making a big mistake because I was playing one of the parts among three characters and it was certainly not the central character.”

Talking about his role in the film he said, “It wasn’t like I was the hero of the film and Farhan and Abhay were small parts of the film. The general rule at that time was that you have to uphold the star status, and I knew this film was talking about exactly the opposite. It kind of empowered me because it’s a story that I believed in, and I thought, ‘to hell with the status’, which is merely something that people give you. The actor has last posted on May 21 where he shared a poster of the global mental health summit.

The recently posted picture of the actor shows a close-up view of his face lightened by sunlight where he wrote, “Sorry for not being on here for some time now. Needed a digital detox! Anyone else goes through that need from time to time? #digitaldetox.” Posting the picture on Instagram on Wednesday morning the actor informed how he had been taking a break from social media.

Seeing the post, his sister cum actress Esha Deol also commented and expressed how she had done the same last month and that she understands that why it is necessary. She wrote, ” “I did the same last month. I get u.”
Actress Dia Mirza also expressed her views by writing, “We all need that .”

Many of his fans shared their views regarding the detox story where one wrote, “I went on one for about 6 months ….. bliss and the most creative period of my life I’d say.” Another one commented, “Absolutely! Especially these last few months.”

While many took to the comment section to let the actor know that they had been missing him whereas other shared heart emoticons. The post shared had been receiving many comments asking the actor how to do it and that they need it too in their life from time to time.

Anisha Victor garners more critical acclaim as Line of Descent releases in UAE

Anisha Victor who received rave reviews for her movie The House Next Door and later for her role in the Zee5 web series REJCTX, is once again gathering acclaim as writer-director Rohit Karn Batra’s film The Line of Descent has released in the UAE last week.

The film stars Hollywood legend Brendan Fraser along with famous Bollywood actors like Prem Chopra, Abhay Deol, Ronit Roy and Neeraj Kabi.

Anisha who also attended the premiere in Dubai with the director says, “Even though I have a small part in the film, when someone tells you Brendan Fraser is in it and you have grown up watching The Mummy, you just say ‘yes!’.”

She plays the key role of a girl called Sima, the third son’s girlfriend. “There’s a stark difference between him and his brothers. He’s a little brat and I’m always trying to calm him down. It was so much fun,” she remarks.

The movie is being loved everywhere and the makers are also planning to take it to Greece and later all over Europe.

Abhay Deol hinted at favouritism when he was demoted to the supporting actor category while his co-star, Hrithik Roshan, was nominated for the leading actor category on an Instagram post in June 2020.

The nominations were for an award show in which Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol were nominated supporting actors despite the equal screening the three actors had in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

During a conversation with Zoom TV , Abhay said, “Why should we put Farhan and Abhay in the same category as Hrithik and Katrina? Because they are bigger stars. It doesn’t make sense. The plot of the film is about three friends on a journey and they would so shamelessly go out there and do it. I didn’t say anything at the time, kept quiet. I was like forget it, whatever, I just won’t go. Even Zindagi, that was my 10th movie, I had done and said so much already that I felt like I am going to be the only one screaming and will look like bitter or cynical. So forget it.”

“This was just shameless, it was shocking, it was just out there and it was so blatant. Like we don’t care what people have to say, we can just do this because we can. And that sort of cavalier, cocky attitude needed to go and now they will be more careful. I am not saying they will necessarily change but they will be careful. Just give the award to one you think is the biggest star but don’t demote me and Farhan,” he added hoping for the industry to be more thoughtful about actions.

Deol hopes that his revelations will bring about a change in the industry.

JL50: A predictable but watchable tale of a plane travelling through time

JL50, a sci-fi thriller, directed and written by Shailender Vyas, is said to be based on the conspiracy theory of aeroplane TWA Flight 513 that took off in 1954 but landed after 35 years with 92 skeletons. Apparently, the plane travelled through time.

In the series, based in West Bengal, terrorists hijack aeroplane AO26 demanding the release of their leader, Partho Majumdar. Majumdar heads a Communist organization ABA, which wishes to separate Bengal from India. At first, the CBI believes that AO26 crashed. However, on the site of the crash, they find JL50, which went missing in 1984. During his investigation, CBI officer Shantanu (Abhay Deol) finds the plane and everything surreal in it. Hence, along with Professor Das (Pankaj Kapur) and pilot Bhiu Ghosh (Ritika Anand), he travels through time to solve the mystery.

A miniseries with 4 short episodes, the series has a medium pace but lags sometimes. Filled with crime, science, politics, mystery, etc, it is a desi Dan Brown. Apart from a few twists, the script looks predictable with a hero solving a mystery with a messy personal life. The script also has multiple inaccuracies.

The direction is very disappointing. There seems to be a lack of effort. With a fairly fascinating concept, this series could have been much more impactful, but it lacks a smart and intense execution. Being a thriller, it portrays very less tension.

Pankaj Kapur is the best thing about this series. Right from the first scene, his acting is impactful. He is the only one holding the series together. Piyush Mishra, as a mad scientist, scares you with his terrifying gaze but has limited screen presence. Abhay Deol as the lead is underwhelming. He sports a bored look the entire time. Every actor has a Bengali accent except Deol. Ritika’s acting is suitable for a horror film rather, not a thriller. Rajesh Sharma, as Gaurango, Shantanu’s colleague, is there only to crack jokes about his wife. As a colleague, he has been given less than minimum space. Sharma could have contributed greatly if he was given more screen time.

The dialogues explain quantum physics in a simple language to the viewers. The sound is apt. It is dramatic, creepy and beautiful depending on the scene. Honestly, it adds more to the climax than the lead actor does.

The camera presents gorgeous landscapes that you must have missed during the lockdown! They didn’t capture the beauty of Kolkata, but there are enough scenes with soothing scenery. It is also creative, experimenting with light and colours.

Adnan Sami retweeted a tweet by the filmmaker Shekhar Kapur calling Bollywood awards shows a ‘negotiation’. Adnan said that he was once offered an award in exchange for a free performance but he refused because of his ‘dignity and self-respect’.

Last month Abhay Deol called out an award show when he and Farhan Akhtar were not given the deserved recognition for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, and termed only as ‘supporting actors’ while Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif were in the supposed ‘leading role’. He blamed this on Bollywood’s ‘lobby’ culture.

“I would like to mention that almost all the award functions demoted me and Farhan from main leads, and nominated us as ‘supporting actors’. Hrithik and Katrina were nominated as ‘actors in a leading role’. So by the industry’s own logic, this was a film about a man and a woman falling in love, with the man supported by his friends for whatever decisions he takes. There are many covert and overt ways in which people in the industry lobby against you. In this case it was shamelessly overt. I of course boycotted the awards but Farhan was ok with it. #familyfareawards,” he wrote in an Instagram post.

Back in 2017, Kangana Ranaut said that she once lost out on an award because she failed to reach the ceremony on time. “Early on, I got dressed up for some award, I don’t remember the award but I was supposed to receive the award for supporting cast for Life In A Metro. I got stuck in traffic. I started getting calls asking ‘where are you’. The hysteria and panic that I experienced, I didn’t make it and Soha (Ali Khan) got it for Rang De Basanti,” she said in an interview.
