In a stern message issued during a special evening briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri slammed Pakistan for breaching the ceasefire agreement that was mutually agreed upon earlier in the day. “This is a breach of the understanding arrived at earlier today,” Misri stated. “The armed forces are giving an adequate and appropriate response to these violations, and we take very, very serious notice of these violations.”
He added, “We call upon Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation with seriousness and responsibility.” Misri confirmed that Indian armed forces have been instructed to respond firmly to any repetition of violations along both the International Border and the Line of Control.
What happened earlier
Earlier today, India and Pakistan had agreed to a full ceasefire starting 5:00 PM IST, following a direct call initiated by Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to the Indian counterpart at 3:35 PM. The agreement came after U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced mediation efforts leading to a breakthrough in de-escalation. Both sides were instructed to halt all military action on land, air, and sea. The DGMOs are scheduled to speak again on May 12 to review the situation.
However, just hours after the agreement, multiple ceasefire violations by Pakistan were reported. Explosions were heard in Srinagar, including Lal Chowk, BB Cantt, and Safapora, and heavy mortar shelling resumed in sectors like RS Pura, Akhnoor, Chamb, and Bhimber. Blackouts were enforced in several regions including Jammu, Udhampur, Srinagar, Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Moga in Punjab. Drone intrusions were also reported and neutralized across 26 locations.
This breach has raised concerns about Pakistan’s intent and commitment to peace. The Indian government, while reaffirming its stance on restraint, has warned that any further provocations will be dealt with strongly.
