UP Police tighten security for Holi: No new traditions, strict action against troublemakers

As Holi approaches, the Uttar Pradesh Police have issued strict guidelines to maintain law and order across the state. The directives, issued by Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar, emphasize celebrating the festival in a traditional manner while ensuring safety and security.

In a statement, the UP Police instructed that “no new tradition should be allowed to be started during festivals. All festivals should be celebrated traditionally.” The police have also stressed the importance of preventing communal tensions and maintaining peace during the celebrations.

Key Directives Issued by UP Police:

  • Strict law enforcement: Police officers have been asked to review past disputes related to Holi and take preventive action to avoid any untoward incidents.
  • Identification of troublemakers: Anti-social elements should be identified in advance, and effective measures should be taken against them to prevent disturbances.
  • Monitoring Holika Dahan sites: Sensitive areas where Holika Dahan (bonfire) has led to disputes in the past must be closely monitored, with adequate police deployment at such locations.
  • Zero tolerance for illegal liquor: The police have been instructed to crack down on illicit liquor and take preventive steps to avoid any alcohol-related incidents.
  • Surveillance and security arrangements: Authorities have been directed to deploy CCTV cameras, conduct foot patrols, and set up checkpoints to maintain public safety.
  • Coordination with local authorities: The police will work with municipal corporations and local administrative bodies to ensure public safety, sanitation, and lighting arrangements at public gathering spots.
  • Health and emergency services on alert: Hospitals and ambulance services have been instructed to remain on standby to handle emergencies.

The DGP has also directed that senior officials should personally inspect Holi processions and major gathering points to ensure smooth celebrations. Additionally, special teams have been formed to monitor social media for any inflammatory content that could incite violence.

With these measures in place, the Uttar Pradesh Police aim to ensure a safe and peaceful Holi for all citizens while upholding traditional values and customs.
