Union Cabinet approves ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal: Report

The Union Cabinet has approved the implementation of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative, according to sources from News18. A comprehensive bill on the matter is expected to be tabled during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently advocated for the proposal, highlighting how frequent elections have become an impediment to the nation’s progress. Speaking at the International Gita Festival in Kurukshetra, Chouhan praised India’s rapid growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, asserting that India is on its way to becoming a global leader, or “Vishwa Guru.”

India held its first general elections in the winter of 1951-1952, an example of the ‘One Nation, One Election’ system that was discontinued after 1967. Referring to this, the Prime Minister stated (in a recent interview with India Today TV), “A commission has been established, and its report has been submitted. We are currently reviewing the findings, and actionable points will emerge from this study. Our commitment to this initiative goes beyond politics—it holds significant importance for the nation.”
