Trump says Modi assured him India will stop buying Russian oil

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him that India will no longer purchase oil from Russia, marking what could be a significant shift in India’s energy procurement strategy.

“So I was not happy that India was buying oil, and he assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia. That’s a big step. Now we’re going to get China to do the same thing,” Trump told reporters. The statement came following recent discussions between the two leaders amid growing global attention on trade realignments and sanctions compliance.

If followed through, this move would represent a major policy adjustment for India, which has been among the largest buyers of discounted Russian crude since the onset of Western sanctions against Moscow. The country’s refineries have relied heavily on Russian supplies to manage domestic fuel prices and maintain steady energy security.

Analysts noted that the assurance to Washington could have geopolitical and economic implications, especially as New Delhi balances its strategic ties between the West and Moscow. While no formal government statement has yet been released from India, Trump’s comments indicate a possible recalibration of India’s import strategy amid U.S. diplomatic pressure.
