Sukhpreet Kaur, the spouse of Sarabjit Singh who passed away in a Pakistani jail in 2013, was killed on Monday in an accident in Amritsar, Punjab, according to IANS.
In the village of Fatehpur, close to Amritsar, Kaur was riding a two-wheeler when she lost control of it, according to the police.
She was taken to the hospital right away, but she died from her wounds. On Tuesday, Sukhpreet’s final rites would be conducted in her hamlet of Bhikhiwind.
The news comes barely three months after Dalbir Kaur, Sarabjit’s sister, passed away from a heart attack. Dalbir had started the “Save Sarabjit” campaign to rescue her brother from a Pakistani prison.
Dalbir Kaur had already been battling a lung infection for a year.
In 1990, Sarabjit Singh went into Pakistan while intoxicated. He was a Bhikhiwind inhabitant.
For his claimed involvement in a bomb blast case involving a fictitious Manjit Singh, Singh was given a death sentence in Pakistan. The court had ordered Sarabjit Singh to be hanged on April 1, 2008, however because to pressure from abroad, his execution was postponed indefinitely.
But in April 2013, after being attacked by convicts at Kot Lakhpat Rai Jail, Singh, then 49, passed away.
Along with her two kids and the wife of Sarbjit Singh, Dalbir Kaur made two trips to the Kot Lakhpat Rai Jail in Lahore. Dalbir Kaur battled the system for her brother’s release throughout the 22 years that Singh was incarcerated.
When Sarabjit passed away, his body was transported from Lahore to Amritsar, where he was given his final rites.
A movie about Sarabjit Singh’s life was also released in 2016; it was about his life.
Actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played the part of Dalbir Kaur in the film. Sarbjit’s wife was portrayed by Richa Chadda in the film.
