Rajya Sabha Polls: Scale tips towards BJP amidst allegations

BJP had won 3 out of 6 seats in Maharashtra despite all the allegations levelled against them by Shiv Sena and Congress.

Intense fighting among parties can be seen after the Rajya Sabha Polls kickstarted yesterday. Moreover, the polls in all the four states – Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Haryana. Also, in the latest update, Maharashtra ruling party government received a blow where the BJP had received 3 out of 6 seats in the state despite all the allegations of horse-trading and misconduct levelled against the party.

The counting of the votes in Haryana and Maharashtra was delayed as BJP and Shiv Sena had moved to the Election Commission accusing each other of misconduct. Devendra Fadnavis had tweeted “Elections are contested not just for the fight, but the victory. Jai Maharashtra,” in this regard. Both the party officials had raised questions on the issue of vote counting and cross-checking. The EC officials had confirmed that due to the problem surrounding the cancelling of the vote of Shiv Sena legislator Suhas Kande, the voting had not started until 1 am and the first result was out in two hours.

Rajya Sabha Polls

Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut, NCP’s Praful Patel and Congress’ Imran Pratapgarhi also won the fiercely-fought elections. Two Union Ministers who had stood for election – Nirmala Sitharaman from Karnataka and Piyush Goyal from Maharashtra had been elected to Rajya Sabha after the results from yesterday’s polls. Mr Goyal had managed to get 48 votes from 284 members of the Legislative Assembly.  

For the sixth seat in Maharashtra, the BJP fielded former MP Dhananjay Mahadik. While the Shiv Sena fielded Sanjay Pawar, who was defeated. Mahadik and Pawar are both from Kolhapur, Maharashtra. MLAs of the ruling party – Jitendra Awhad(NCP), Yashmoli Thakur(INC) and Suhas Kande(Shiv Sena) were accused of violating the model code of conduct. 

Congress candidates Pramod Tiwari, Mukul Wasnik, and Randeep Surjewala were elected in Rajasthan. “The Congress’ victory in three Rajya Sabha seats is a victory for democracy.  I congratulate Pramod Tiwari, Mukul Wasnik, and Randeep Surjewala on their re-election to the House of Commons. I am sure that they will be a powerful advocate for Rajasthan’s rights in Delhi”. Chief minister Ashok Gehlot said on Twitter.
