Only Tamil in PM SHRI schools: Dharmendra Pradhan defends NEP policy

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has defended the National Education Policy (NEP) and the PM SHRI schools initiative, emphasizing that Tamil will be the primary language of instruction in Tamil Nadu’s PM SHRI schools.

Dharmendra Pradhan Backs NEP, Clarifies Tamil-Only Instruction in PM SHRI Schools

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has reaffirmed that PM SHRI (Prime Minister Schools for Rising India) schools in Tamil Nadu will operate exclusively in Tamil, addressing concerns raised over language policies under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Speaking at a recent event, Pradhan dismissed criticisms that the NEP imposes a specific language on states and reiterated that regional languages remain a priority. His remarks come amid ongoing debates in Tamil Nadu over the three-language policy and the state’s resistance to Hindi imposition.

Tamil Nadu’s Opposition to NEP

Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed the three-language formula, advocating for its existing two-language policy (Tamil and English). Political leaders, including Chief Minister MK Stalin, have argued that any attempt to introduce Hindi or Sanskrit in state-run schools undermines linguistic and cultural identity.

In response, Pradhan stated that PM SHRI schools in Tamil Nadu will teach only in Tamil, in line with the state’s preferences and constitutional provisions. “NEP is not about forcing a language but about promoting regional languages in education,” he added.

What is the PM SHRI Schools Initiative?

PM SHRI schools are a flagship initiative of the central government, aimed at modernizing education with better infrastructure, technology-driven learning, and a focus on local languages. Under this scheme:

  • Schools will receive central funding for educational improvements.
  • Regional languages will be prioritized as the medium of instruction.
  • Emphasis will be placed on experiential and skill-based learning.

Political Reactions and Public Response

While Pradhan’s statement seeks to ease concerns in Tamil Nadu, political parties such as the DMK and AIADMK continue to demand clarity on the implementation of language policies under NEP. Academics and parents have also raised questions about the availability of quality Tamil-language textbooks and resources.

The Tamil Nadu government’s resistance to Hindi imposition has long shaped its education policies. With the Union Education Minister now confirming Tamil-only instruction in PM SHRI schools, the debate over language and NEP remains a crucial topic ahead of upcoming political discussions on education reforms in India.
