Emphasizing that such acts of terror will not weaken the nation’s resolve, he added, “Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice… they will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger.”
The attack occurred in the Baisaran valley in Pahalgam, a scenic location accessible only by foot or horseback, popular with tourists. Security forces quickly reached the area following the firing.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has claimed responsibility for the assault.
Earlier, PM Modi had spoken to Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the phone regarding the incident and directed him to take all suitable measures. The Prime Minister also requested the Home Minister to visit the site of the attack.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti also condemned the incident, calling it a “cowardly attack on tourists.” She stated, “Such violence is unacceptable and must be denounced.”
Security has been tightened in the region, and an investigation is underway to trace the attackers.
