He has also raised his objection on Bengali not being included in the list of classical languages during the Governor’s Conference on the Role of NEP in Transforming Higher Education earlier in the day,

“There is no question of implementing NEP in the state for the time being. More discussions need to be held on the matter with all stakeholders. We have expressed our reservations about certain aspects of the NEP, as they undermine the country’s federal structure and the role of the states,” the education minister told reporters, acccoring to PTI. “Right now, we should focus on fighting the pandemic. There is no rush for NEP implementation,” he added.

Earlier, a six-memeber committee set up by the West Bengal government had pointed out that the NEP lacked clarity in many aspects and that it cannot be applied uniformly across a diverse country like India, with diversified socio-economic and cultural conditions and had submitted a report regarding the same.

The NEP was approved by the Union Cabinet of India on 29 July 220 outlining the vision of India’s new education system replacing the previous National Education Policy of 1986.

Since then criticisms have arose from various quarters regarding its approach to the education system of India
