Mumbai airport proposes user development fee to fund ₹10,000 Crore infrastructure upgrades

Mumbai Airport plans to levy a user development fee of ₹325 for domestic and ₹650 for international passengers to finance infrastructure upgrades worth ₹10,000 crore over five years.

Mumbai Airport’s Infrastructure Expansion Plan

The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) has proposed a user development fee (UDF) to finance a ₹10,000 crore infrastructure revamp over the next five years. The fee structure includes ₹325 per domestic passenger and ₹650 per international passenger, subject to approval by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA).

Why the UDF Increase?

The proposed infrastructure expansion aims to:

  • Enhance passenger handling capacity to accommodate rising air traffic.
  • Modernize airport facilities, including terminal upgrades and improved security systems.
  • Expand runway and taxiway operations for better efficiency.
  • Upgrade baggage handling and check-in systems to reduce wait times.

Impact on Travelers

If approved, the revised UDF will increase travel costs for passengers using Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). However, the upgrades are expected to improve airport efficiency and passenger experience.

Regulatory Approval Pending

The proposal is currently under review by AERA, which will determine whether the UDF adjustments are justified based on Mumbai Airport’s expansion needs.
