In a major revelation during the joint military briefing held on May 11, 2025, Director General Military Operations (DGMO) Lt General Rajiv Ghai announced that over 100 terrorists have been neutralised as part of India’s ongoing retaliatory campaign — Operation Sindoor. Among those eliminated were two high-profile targets: Yusuf Azhar and Abdul Malik Rauf, both deeply involved in some of the most heinous terror attacks on Indian soil.

Yusuf Azhar, one of the masterminds of the 1999 IC-814 hijacking, and Abdul Malik Rauf, linked to the 2019 Pulwama suicide bombing, were confirmed to be among the casualties. Lt Gen Ghai underscored that these figures had long eluded justice and their deaths mark a turning point in India’s counter-terrorism operations.
Earlier, outlining the rationale behind Operation Sindoor, Lt Gen Rajiv Ghai stated:
“You are all by now familiar with the brutality and the dastardly manner in which 26 innocent lives were prematurely terminated at Pahalgam on 22nd April. When you combine those horrific scenes and the pain of the families that the nation witnessed with numerous other recent terrorist strikes on our armed forces and defenceless civilians, we knew that the time had arrived to make yet another compelling statement of our resolve as a nation. Operation Sindoor was conceptualized with a clear military aim to punish the perpetrators and planners of terror and to destroy their terror infrastructure. What I do not state here is the often stated determination of India and its intolerance to terror.”
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the operation targeted multiple terror launchpads, training camps and logistical bases across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), using precision airstrikes and coordinated artillery fire.
The briefing reiterated that the operation is still ongoing, and Indian Armed Forces remain in a state of high alert given Pakistan’s repeated ceasefire violations even after an agreement was brokered on May 10.
