
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on a visit to Sri Lanka, has been conferred with the country’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Lanka Mitra Vibhushan’, by President Anura Dissanayake. The award recognises PM Modi’s role in strengthening bilateral ties and fostering long-standing friendship between India and Sri Lanka.
Taking to social media after the ceremony, PM Modi expressed gratitude and said the honour is not just his but for the 1.4 billion people of India. “It also speaks volumes about the historical ties and deep-rooted friendship between the people of India and Sri Lanka,” he wrote.

Images from the event showed a cordial exchange between the two leaders, with President Dissanayake placing the medal around Modi’s neck and the two holding hands in a symbolic gesture of unity.
The award comes at a time when both nations are actively working to enhance strategic, cultural and economic cooperation in the region.
