On August 14, the Centre said that the nations of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) have pitched for closer relations for strengthening agro-biodiversity to ensure food and nutrition security.
Agriculture ministers of BRICS countries deliberated virtually on “BRICS Partnership for Strengthening Agro Biodiversity for Food and Nutrition Security”, ahead of the summit, which will be chaired by India in the month of September.
According to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the nations of BRICS are well-positioned to lead in helping to achieve the goals of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, i.e., to eradicate hunger and poverty.
The Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement, “The strong agricultural research base in BRICS countries and the need to harness and share knowledge, facilitate the transfer of technologies from lab to land to provide improved solutions for enhanced productivity, especially in the face of climate change, maintaining agro-biodiversity and ensuring sustainable use of natural resources was acknowledged.”
India has developed the BRICS Agriculture Research platform for the promotion of cooperation in fields of agricultural research, extension, technology transfer, training as well as capacity building.
In addition, the platform aims to encourage research cooperation for the improvement of the use and application of agricultural technologies by meeting the requirements of producers and processors.
